Polygon: Wolfenstein: The New Order Review

"The New Order’s got all the workings of a classic shooter. But in their trip back to the well, Machine Games has brought all of its talents to bear. The New Order is held together, even rocketed beyond the basic sum of its smart levels and effective mechanics by its characters. That humanity takes what would be a good shooter and makes it something truly memorable."

Rikitatsu4011d ago

Gotta respect Bethesda for churning out some lengthy, single-player only games like Dishonored and (hopefully) Wolfenstein.

Testfire4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

Bethesda didn't develop the game, they only published it. Machinegames developed it so give them credit. But I agree, I love when a great single player campaign is the focus.

Rikitatsu4011d ago

MachineGames is a Bethesda team.

That's like saying Nintendo didn't develop Metroid Prime, Retro did.

Testfire4011d ago

Ok, on that logic, let's give Zenimax credit then...

Bladesfist4011d ago

Zenimax is Bethesda, or at least was started by them.

showtimefolks4011d ago

how about instead of arguing we should celebrate the fact we are getting a very good game and right after this is another hopefully great game, Watch dogs

can't wait to play both on ps4, enjoy the games instead of arguing which site gave which ex game a bad or average score. End of the day if you enjoyed it than that's all that should matter.

The last of Us the best best game of last 10 or so years, i may even say best game since start of new century. but guess what others will have their own opinion and they are wrong for thinking differently

Volkama4011d ago

"others will have their own opinion and they are wrong for thinking differently"

lol

showtimefolks4010d ago

Volkama

LOL i just realized what i said LOL

others will have their own opinion and they are not wrong for thinking differently, i meant to say

incendy354011d ago

Wow, Polygon is usually really tough too. Sounds like a classic, definitely down for an immersive FPS with a compelling story.

Ninver4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

well it's not a Sony exclusive so i guess all's fair in love and war right? site will still get downvoted till they disappear

ot: game is getting great scores from reputable sites

No_Limit4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

LOL, these are the latest Polygon's reviews for console exclusive games.

MLB the SHow 14 = 8.5
Kinect Sports Rival = 6
Infamous:SS = 8.5
Fable Anniversary = 5
Gran Turismo 6 = 9
Ryse = 6

LOL, So why did Polygon scores both Ryse and Fable Anniversary below their Metacritic avg. and all the Sony ones are above their avgs if they are so bias like you said?

Ninver4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

yeah let's compare a few average rated exlcusives with years of constant bias towards more deserving AAA exclusives like Uncharted and TLOU.

The score they gave TLOU (the most awarded game in history and the GOTGeneration) was down right disrespectful and insulting to not only ND but the intelligence of gamers world wide.

No_Limit4011d ago

"yeah let's compare a few average rated exlcusives with years of constant bias towards more deserving AAA exclusives like Uncharted and TLOU."

Dude, just gave it a rest. They have multiple reviewers on Polygon just like any other reputable sites and the opinion of ones does not equal to the entire site being bias.

Gamespot, a very reputable site, gave TLOU a 8, not that much different than the 7.5 that Polygon gave TLOU. Polygon also gave Forza Horizon, a X360 exclusive published by MS, 6, while that game earns an avg. of 8.5 and was universally acclaimed by most sites and gamers.

IGN, Gamespot, Adam Sessler, and others were also accused of being bias because they gave out some high scores for Xbox exclusives and some low scores for PS exclusives. You guys are looking for excuses and not the whole picture here.

HighResHero4011d ago

This is how it continues to happen.

ZodTheRipper4011d ago

Am I the only one who can imagine that Polygon scored the recent PS-exclusives intentionally higher because of the immense backlash they received?

oof464010d ago

If you base your love/hate for a website on how positive/negative they review games on the console of your choice, then you're missing out on a lot.

Polygon has some really, really well written articles written by some great people. You should look up the story about Street Fighter: The Movie. It is a hilarious read.

Not saying it's not a good game but just think of all of the great games, critically acclaimed games these guys have shunned and given a lower score

It's like they enjoy going against the crowd

Rikitatsu4011d ago

Check the other reviews. Positivity across the board.

-Foxtrot4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

I'm seeing 7s and 8s, which is not a bad thing

Hardly seeing any 9s but thats my point about them going against the crowd.

Rikitatsu4011d ago (Edited 4011d ago )

So, you're seeing a lot of 8s and you think a 9 is going against the crowed?

Less by one number?

Well, sure bro. Just to remind you, Polygon isn't the only site that gave it 9...

caseh4011d ago

@Rikitatsu

Less by 1 number these days means good but not great. Not my opinion as I couldn't give a toss about reviews anymore.

XStation4011d ago

@Rikitatsu

Foxtrot hates on almost everything positive.

-Foxtrot4010d ago

LOL

How is that hating on something positive

Look what I bloody said

"Not saying it's not a good game"

"which is not a bad thing"

Stop trying to start shit

Fireseed4011d ago

Yeah! How dare they not have a conforming result influenced by others!!! What is this? A personal opinion?!

Wolfenstein: The New Order turns ten years old today, so we decided to play it again and discovered just how much of an extinct kind of game it is.

It's an outstanding game and so was The Old Blood. Also a lost era of gaming. Interesting, I received a physical copy of The Old Blood 9 years ago today from Poland. It was digital only in North America initially upon release so I had to import.

Wolfenstein: The New Order - A Highly Rated FPS That Hasn't Stood the Test of Time

Wolfenstein: The New Order launched 10 years ago today, but can it stand up to the modern FPS titles it inspired?

Seth_hun355d ago

I disagree. Its still a fantastic game, with very good gunplay and a surprisingly loveable cast of characters and a good story trough many different and interesting setpieces

hiawa23355d ago (Edited 355d ago )

All The New Order needs for my tastes is a this gen enhancement patch.

ChasterMies355d ago

I played New Order a couple of years after launch and I give it an 8/10. The shooter holds up because it is focused on being a good shooter. There is no crafting, no RPG elements, no open world find the question mark Weapons are fun. Enemies are fun. Levels offer a nice mix of stealth and shooting. You get to be the predator; this isn’t a game about fending off waves of enemies while a robot companion unlocks a door. Most importantly, New Order is the last of a dying breed of single player shooters.

Skuletor355d ago

Singleplayer shooters are still getting released every year, just look up "boomer shooters" and you'll find an an abundance of them. AAA fps campaigns, not so much.

Last year had Trepang2, RoboCop: Rogue City, Turbo Overkill, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, Dread Templar, Sprawl and more

DustMan355d ago

The games you mentioned are not from AAA developers. Wolfenstein likely had a budget that was probably as big as all those games you mentioned combined. I'm not knocking the new wave of retro shooters. I absolutely love them (I think some get much higher review scores than they deserve though). I just really wouldn't describe Wolfenstein as purely a boomer shooter based on the relatively cohesive story, with cut scenes and is fully voice acted. Full set piece moments.

AA development seems to be focused keeping the single player solo experience alive. But the big developers are only concerned about the MTX and milking players who enjoy multiplayer.

ChasterMies355d ago (Edited 355d ago )

The age of AA shooters. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I like less expense, shorter games.

Abear21355d ago

Weird all the Wolfenstein articles.

Can you guess what will be announced at Xbox showcase?

DefenderOfDoom2355d ago

What Machine Games did with Wolfenstein franchise is awesome. The game play definitely to me , is still very fun to play !!!
