EA Shutting Down Online Servers of 50 Games on June 30

EA today announced that they will shut down the servers for 50 of their games. The company claims that combined the games only account for 1% of peak online players across all titles and they would rather focus their IT staff on the other 99% of players.

Forget crysis that multiplayer wasnt so good the only good thing about that was the nuke specail effects graphics in multiplayer.

Bf2 going down is huge they better no drop the private server support that will cause a crapstorm.

LAWSON724043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

I have not played Crysis 3 MP but 2 had a decent MP mode and surprisingly thanks to the demo on 360 me and my friends got excited for it so at launch O was able to play it with a good number of people

Gaming1014043d ago

This whole list might as well have been titled "Crap no one plays anymore... except for a few sad souls still playing their PS2 and other stuff belonging in the gaming archaeology exhibit" lol

Star Wars Battlefront II.......(best Vader voice)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! !!!

Isn't crysis just shutting down because the MP portion was run by Gamespy? That's also the reason why all Nintendo WFC titles are shutting down in a week.

DeadlyFire4043d ago

Indeed. May 31/June is the end of 90% or more Gamespy supported titles having multiplayer lobbies from them. That is all this effects. I am sure most rented servers should still work just fine. Unless that was tied to Gamespy somehow. I doubt that though. I have seen a few of these games have server support when Gamespy dropped them right after the purchase. Like Neverwinter nights. So private servers and rented ones you have should still work I believe.

This is basically the story of my gaming on the last gen with mostly xbox 360.

I could never go back and have good experiences with the games I liked playing because for the most part, they were dependent on the active large online community, and once that disappears, the game itself is gone and no longer resembles what it once was.

* This is why single player focused games are ALWAYS easier to go back and play again.

* Mario Kart is single player focused, even though it includes local & online multiplayer.

^ This game(all of them) will always be playable and fun because of that.

UltraNova4042d ago

You touched a very sensitive matter here.

With the slow death of single player, owning multiplayer games when you know their servers will be shut down eventually it takes that feeling away of popping them back in that old dusty console or even on your pc so many years later to relive those moments.

Damn, to this day I still play Perfect Dark (local mp)with my childhood palls whenever we meet! I even use my PS1 to play some RE1 Directors Cut now and then! Thank God online mp weren't a thing back then!

My Titanfall (PC) copy is gathering dust (10 hrs in I got over it)and left me wondering why keep it for my collection, which is massive btw If I cant play it again at some point? Trade-in is the way for these games and I rarely trade in games!

linkenski4039d ago

Not to mention games that focus on split-screen rather than online MP. Rayman Legends the newer Mario games and alike will never really lose their touch with age because they are not online multiplayer games.

Blaze9294043d ago

does anyone know if EA titles on Xbox One are on Microsoft servers or still EA?

DeadlyFire4043d ago

Gamespy is the reason for the shutdown. Its not just EA titles that are effected. This is a short list of what is effected. Anything that uses gamespy's lobby system for consoles is likely to see a shutdown. Its going to be a big shift for many gamers that are playing games from the past to jump into the new stuff.

1nsaint4043d ago

I know asking questions is frowned upon here on N4G but I don't think I can find an answer to my question on google.

So the entire multiplayer will become unplayable for all of the mentioned games? or will just the dedicated servers shut down and p2p connections will still be possible?

I'm guessing not based on the comments i'm reading.
but i also noticed there are no 360 games on this list and only one ps3 game.
Is that because they are running on Xbox Live and PSN servers?

And if so, how come the games that are on steam are also shutting down? Or doesn't steam offer the same server service as Xbox and PSN?

DeadlyFire4043d ago

Just the console multiplayer, and quick lobbies you can create I believe. And most games that support private servers or rented servers should still be accessible as they are not under Gamespy's grasp. Which should also effect X360 games as well. All has been quiet, but a major gamespy server backbone of many, many PS2, X360, PS3 games is going to drop. PC titles should see some gameplay still around. Server lobbies on Gamespy network might not work, but services like Gameranger can keep the game lobby system going.

medman4043d ago

Good luck with digital only versions folks. I'll take a physical disc anyday, and everyday.

ATi_Elite4042d ago (Edited 4042d ago )

Crysis MP is TRASH!!

Warface is Crytek's Best MP game to date and Crysis MP 1,2,3 all suck if you ask me but Warface is surely 2 nanosuits above those crappy MP games.

All those PC MP modes I play on PRIVATE SERVERS anyway so this doesn't effect me or most PC gamers.

I haven't played BF2 on an EA server in like 7 years anyway lol.

But it is sad to see BF2 server go down. BF2 is one of the greatest MP games EVER and it's EA server should stay up for Hall of Fame reasons.

Battlefield since 1942

actually Battlefield since Codename: Eagle!

awi59514042d ago

@Gaming101

I played Bf2 last year and there was like more than 50 servers still up and running and they were full.

This is exactly why online only games should not be a future trend. Titanfalls, Diablo 3, and other online only games will be completely non-playable in the future, like having an expiration date.

Austin484043d ago

I totally agree with you they should at least do something like The Last Of Us huge and very enjoyable single player and fun multiplayer just my opinion.

darx4043d ago

Don't most of the games on that list have both single and multi player?

Panthers4042d ago

Yes but a lot of the games made today require online to play, even the single player portion.

NatureOfLogic_4043d ago

I was coming in here to say the same thing. Online only will never have the long-term value that singe player games have. If online only becomes a trend, there will be too many games to keep servers running for more than a year or two.

LackTrue4K4043d ago

"Online only will never have the long-term value that singe player games have

tell that to an Xbox One owner...

most of there games are online only. lol...

frankdrebin724043d ago

@onyoursistersback

what do you perceive as long term value??
take infamous ss..no online play,..limited replay value,..traded in or gathering dust.

take titanfall,..total opposite,..online only,..hours of play,.

i would bet my left testicle titanfall players put more hours in playing it online than infamous ss players do replaying the campaign only.

value is different for everyone.
for me gaming value is hours of fun out a game.
therefore titanfall wipes infamous ss arse and tosses it in the bargain bin,....titanfall and other multiplayer games will always offer more fun,.more often, with different scenerious,. than a single player only game.
thats value!

maniacmayhem4043d ago

To be fair some of those games listed are 8 to 9 years old. I'm sure the die hards have gotten their full worth of game enjoyment from those titles.

Also as the article stated some of those games didn't see a lot of users and was only wasting EA's money.

Pillsbury14043d ago

Stop enabling EA, it's not right.

4043d ago
diehardmetallicafan4043d ago

maybe they can now focus on finishing battlefield 4...

extermin8or4043d ago

not actually Ea's fault it's because Gamespy are shutting down. Some of those games are already hving community supported options put in place-like battlefront 2.

Darkstares4043d ago

It's not just EA's policies, Sony also shuts down games same as Microsoft (but not as often). If people don't play the games anymore there's not much use keeping the servers going. We are also talking about $60 max for these games and I imagine people have gotten more hours of enjoyment out of them online than most games people play offline. Not trying to defend these policies but rather showing some context to it.

Qrphe4043d ago

Diablo 2 was online and it's playable. The problem with online games is that many don't have a peer-to-peer connectivity function

Drekken4043d ago

Diablo 2 had an offline mode. D3 on the PC HAS to connect to BNet or it wont work. To this day, I can still install Diablo 2 and play on PC.

johndoe112114043d ago

Thank you. And herein lies the problem of online only games. The sad part is this seems to be a growing trend now, creating games and focusing on the online aspects.

Again, this is why we cannot have a digital only future, why we need to continue having games that do not depend on online servers to work.

Recently we lost one of the best online games in my opinion, resistance 2 8 player co-op mode, when sony shut down the servers. Those are experiences we'll never get back. There were still tons of people online playing that mode even though it was old.

We gamers can change this industry, the microsoft DRM and sony Driveclub fiascoes have proved that, but the problem is too many of us are just willing to let the devs and publishers do whatever they want and we're allowing them to tell us what we can and cannot do.

We seriously need to have more games focus just as much on great single player experiences as well as multiplayer experiences so when those servers go offline we can still enjoy our games.

WhySoJelly4043d ago

Online Gaming was the a big leap, like going from 2d side scrollers to 3d Mario 64, Online Games will always exist and the provide unpredictable gameplay environment's, unlike single player only games where most AI is scripted and walks down the same hallway every time you play it, just because you don't like or are intimidate by Online games please don't push your opinions on everyone, i'm fine with a game shutting down if it provides me with experiences i will remember forever!

cyclindk4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

Nobody "pushing" their opinions on anyone

If that's the case, then you are also which, YOU = hypocrite

I believe most people are in no way opposed to online gaming, just critical of its longevity PER game

I think yes "scripted" AI at it's current state, isn't amazing, but I think we would all love it if the AI were more advanced, so someday maybe single player experiences will be more dynamic in that regard

Personally, the "bridge" between the two is the best option, combined experiences if the consumer so desires, turn it off or on, i.e. Watchdogs and other cooperative experiences

Intimidated? Really? Who are these intimidated people?! I've just never met one, I'd really like to see an example of what sort of person, minus those with some sever psychological deficits, are intimidated to of all things, play online...

Totally agree with this though:

"Online Gaming was the a big leap, like going from 2d side scrollers to 3d Mario 64, Online Games will always exist and the provide unpredictable gameplay environment's, unlike single player only games where most AI is scripted and walks down the same hallway every time you play it,"

johndoe112114043d ago

Please accept this "most ridiculous comment of the post" award.

cyclindk4043d ago

Well I would submit then that those individuals who are "intimidated" are not solely intimidated by online gaming, but in ANYTHING competitive to begin with, so the issue isn't inherent to gaming per se.

Maybe for console players, but on PC anyone willing to sustain a server could allow others to enjoy the game for years to come. thats why you see people still playing games like UT99.

tehpees34043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

Its because big publishers are really on the idea that games should be a service and not a product.

Precisely why I don't support any game which requires you to connect to company servers.

MonstaTruk4043d ago

SOUNDS good. What you're saying then is that you won't be supporting The Division & Destiny with a full price purchase. Is that right? Because I won't be buying those games at full price, if ever, because of this online server cutoff issue. How serious are you?

jcnba284043d ago

Isn't Evolve going to be online only?

Dynasty20214043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

Until CoD goes away and dies in a ditch like it needs to, devs will focus on MP before SP.

A game with a solid MP maintains value even 2nd hand. Seriously, you can pick up CoD MW for like £20 these days. It's ancient, but people still play it.

Thief and Infamous?

Pfft, £15. But then Infamous kinda sucked anyway.

ritsuka6664043d ago

Yeah we want cloud gaming so that corporations can tell us how and when to game...

NOT!

JeffGUNZ4043d ago

You really think people will be playing Titanfall 7-10 years from now? Give me a break. Their will be multiple titanfalls out between that time frame and new games in between. Everything you own has an expiration date on it. Look at this list, you name me ANYONE in your life that will be so affected by Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 shutting down?

I get your point, but no one is forcing anyone to support online only games. They will not be the "trend", but will be more common with games that are heavily MP focused and apply forced single player campaigns. I'd rather a company devote all their time on map design, balance, etc then split it up and force a single player campaign. Look at Titanfall, all the maps are amazingly designed, it's balanced really well and is one of the best FPS on the market.

WTF. SWBF2 is going down! OMG NO

EDIT: False alarm http://www.gamespot.com/art...

Holy sack that was a close call, but this is exactly why online only games are NOT the future for me.

XiNarutoUzumaki4043d ago

Thank God Mass Effect 3 MP isn't going down.

F4sterTh4nFTL4043d ago

No way Mass Effect 3 MP is going down in the next 3-5 years since it still has a sizeable playerbase, so stop worrying about it.

cyclindk4043d ago (Edited 4043d ago )

Would be nice if the publishers would make some "guarantees" though, like no matter the sales of a game, THAT game's MP has 3 year guaranteed online support. Or simply charge some premium fee for "extended life servers" for those dedicated fans. Like five bucks a month or something. Maybe less.

RainbowDragon883306d ago

I agree i try to get a new pc for me andromeda i don't have a pc until that and only can play the mp at ps3 at the moment but if i have a. Pc again i want to finish my arsenal of weapons, characters etc. too (im working on it only ur weapons left on ps3)

AnotherProGamer4043d ago

not really

many publishers do this, the games have very little players on them to keep counting supporting it

MonstaTruk4043d ago

Then why don't they give another option to continue online multiplayer later on, like the PC? They need to hear us...

StoneyYoshi4043d ago

More than half those games you have probably never looked at or played, maybe even heard of. The only ones i think that are relevant are all the battlefield games on PC and battlefront 2. The rest don't matter.

I mean most of those games are almost 10 years old! I'm surprised EA didn't shut a lot of those down sooner.

elhebbo164043d ago

Not to interrupt the circlejerk here, but EA is not that bad. for one origin has a better refund system than steam (nothing against steam btw). I wanted a refund for BF4 because of the crashes I was getting and I was suprised at how quick they responded and gave it to me. They even have a new program called "on the house" that gives one free game every month, to keep, for ever.

sjaakiejj4043d ago

Except that this has nothing to do with EA.

Akira20204043d ago

Just curious if you even read the article. The game servers they're shutting down are for much older games (mostly on PC and a few older console versions) that if you tried to play; you'd be lucky to find even 1 or 2 people playing on a server. Keeping those servers active when VERY few people even play on costs a lot of $$$$$.

EA may make shit moves, but this is understandable.
