Mario Kart 8 team pushed Wii U to its limits, but the console “still has a lot of potential left”

Mario Kart 8 manages to push the “Wii U’s capabilities to their limits”, director Kosuke Yabuki has said.

This is the team's first ever HD game, and they pretty much were able to skip the 7th gen to make a high quality 8th gen game on their first try. Imagine what games will look like when Nintendo fully realizes the power of the Wii U and the technology of HD games!

Errefus4051d ago

Cant wait to see The next Mario 3D game it will look amazing.

Nintentional24051d ago

oh hell yeah it would. Just imagine, if we're gushing over how good this game looks, imagine how F'n AMAZING Metroid will look, Zelda, Mario Galaxy 3(fingers crossed), and Fire Emblem will look. I'm super stoked for the future of Nintendo IPs in HD after seeing how drop dead amazing Mario Kart 8 turned out. I cannot wait til E3.

Errefus4051d ago

I hope Zelda U is like the tech demo but better!!! (fingers crossed)

rivencleft4050d ago

Couldn't agree with you more, really hope they bring back the Super Mario N64 type of game I loved so much, would love to see them do that on the Wii U. I know the Galaxy games were similar but they didn't seem to capture that essence or experience I had playing Mario 64, maybe that was just because I was a kid and can't experience that again, but it'd be awesome if they tried to recreate that feel to the game. Mario N64 is still a game I go back to often because I had so many great memories and fun times playing it.

Agent_hitman4051d ago

I completely agree with you.. And I also hope that Nintendo will unveil the next new Zelda game..

3-4-54051d ago

I can't wait for a 3rdf party dev to actually be talented enough to figure out how to make a Wii U game look as good as Mario Kart 8.

I'm starting to think it's the lack of TRUE talent & ingenuity within the gaming Industry that is the reason they complain about the Wii U.

* Get the top 10 dev's in all of gaming and they'd make a beautiful game on Wii U no problem.

It's the Dev's that aren't as good as they think they are that somehow can't figure out how to do it, so they blame it on the console, instead of their lack of talent.

^ This happens, although not always.

Geekman4051d ago

As long as it's still weaker than the PS4 and Xbox One the "Weak U" nickname isn't going anywhere, sadly.

mikel10154051d ago

Just like the Weakstation 2 compared to the Xbox and Gamecube

fr0sty4051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

The difference being, PS2 came out well before the others and had better games and had racked up solid sales by the time the others launched. The Wii U came out well before the others and had little to show with games and sales when the competition arrived.

Also, the difference in power is a lot more significant this time around.

Th3o4051d ago

If you think referencing a nearly 15 year old console will hurt anyone you will be very surprised...

PS2 was still outselling the Gamecube...actually by a lot, I believe even the outsold the Wii.

Now the same thing, the ps4 is outselling the Wii.U and it came out later than it.

I'm not a fan of just one console. I own almost all except Wii.U (which I'm buying the Mario Kart bundle and the Xbox One which I'm not buying because I own PC).

Just don't start trolling. I would say this the both of you:P

paulcek4051d ago

@ fr0sty

Actually, the biggest difference in power was between the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The jump from Wii to Wii U was bigger than the jump from PS3 to PS4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One, so Nintendo actually caught up a little bit.

Who cares about power? Just look at PS2 and Wii sales. Then look at a gaming PC. Video game consoles don't need a megaton of power, they just need great games.

Do you guys hate your PS3s or Xbox360s now that they are weak compared to next-gen? No! In fact, developers still want to make games for them. Like the Assassin's Creed game exclusive to last-gen consoles. Developers are still interested in these consoles. After all, they are used to developing on them, and there's still a huge install base playing. Even now, people are buying PS3s and Xbox 360s. And when the PS3 drops in price later, more people will buy it. I don't think these consoles will die until 2-3 years into the PS4/Xbox One's life.

I mean TLOU came out on PS3 and it was amazing! The Wii U can handle games like that (if Nintendo were to ever put games like that on the Wii U of course). Eventually, we will reach a point where our eyes cannot tell the difference. We're not exactly there yet, but we're getting close.

Realplaya4051d ago

Actually it isn't about the power but how you apply it. Pikmen, Mario 3d World Wind Waker HD and Mario Kart 8 are proof and before you scream it's the art style Sunset over drive uses the same style and there touting polygons.

Lets just give the credit where the credit is due first game and it's a classic.

And yet, Neither PS4 nor Xbone will be getting near the amount of exclusive content as the Wii U. As a primarily PC gamer, the libraries of the PS4 and Xbone offer hardly anything I don't already have access to. The Wii U on the other hand gives me a different experience from the competition and gives the hands down best exclusives period.

So... what's that about power? My PC puts all current gen consoles to shame and then some. Isn't it the unique games that are supposed to set consoles apart? And isn't it always supposed to gameplay first anyway?

I think the console gaming community needs to grow up.

LAWSON724051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

I love this post. Bubs for you good sir.

You could always spend $400 on a PS4 now and play the only good looking exclusive I have seen, Infamous, or get a Wii U and play, SM3DW, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Wonderful 101, MK8 (not out but soon), Pikman 3, NSMBU and Luigi U, Monster Hunter 3, DKTF, an hell even Lego City Undercover.

As a PC gamer I see the PS4 as pointless right now unless you have a love for Infamous and maybe your friends are exclusive to the platform, which is why I got an Xbone. I think I will get my PS4 black friday, sounds like a good time. As for Wii U and 3DS I want them as soon as possible because their libraries have so much exclusive content

Ghost_Nappa4051d ago

1. we already know pcs are more powerful 2. Mario and zelda arent worth virtually non existent 3rd party support and having digital purchases be locked to one system

stuna14051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

What???? Exclusive content! Sony 1st party developers beg to differ.

This is the issue with the WII U, not only is it getting the bare minimum of 3rd party support, but it's 1st party support is just now starting to make their rounds! Mind you this is with the WII U being on the market with practically no next gen competition for an entire year. The WII U was ill conceived if you ask me! It fits into a space all its own.

For almost 2 years game after game, there has been someone stating this will be the game that will shoot the WII U into the stratosphere only to move onto the next game in line. Although I personally believe MK8 will see great success, there's only so much 1 game can do! And when it comes to the WII U its problems are systemic.

Those stating they have PC’s doesn't nagate the point of exclusive content! There are just some thing that will never make the transition from consoles to PC’s and, vicsa verse. Some games play better on consoles than PC’s

torchic4051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

how was GTA V on your PC and Wii U?

or how was that Super Mario #1793? totally new experience *rolls eyes*

InTheLab4051d ago

Have fun missing Destiny and begging for GtA ports. The PC/WiiU combo doesn't really work as you will miss out on a few titles that won't come to PC and can't come to WiiU.

Metallox4051d ago

@torchic
@InTheLab

There are still tons of games. What's the problem?

zeuanimals4051d ago

PC doesn't get all of the games the PS4 and X1 are getting, like FFXV, KH3, Destiny, etc. Wii U also isn't getting those games.

"Neither PS4 nor Xbone *will* be getting near the amount of exclusive content as the Wii U."

"Will" gives the impression you mean forever and always... And what makes you think that?

Sony has 12 internal studios and about 5 2nd party studios. 3 of their internal studios also have sub-divisions meaning one of those studios is always working on more than one project.

MS doesn't have as many studios but they work with a lot of 2nd party studios and they often buy exclusivity.

If you're sticking with Wii U and PC only because you think the other consoles won't show anything, you're gonna be proven wrong.

PrinceOfAllSaiyans4051d ago

@strago not trying to start a fight, but PS4/XB1 have way more exclusives coming than Wii U. Why do Nintendo fans gotta lie to themselves to make them feel better ?

PS4
The Order 1886
Driveclub
Uncharted 4
Deep Down
Hotline Miami 2
Rime
Everybody's Gone Into The Rapture
Shadow of the Beast
Guerrilla Games new RPG IP
Quantic Dream's new project
Media Molecule's new project
Sony Band's new project
Sony London's new project
H-hour

XB1
Halo 5
Sunset Overdrive
Gears Of War 4
Quantum Break
And many more announced games at E3

deafdani4051d ago

While everything you've said is true, I think you're forgetting the fact that the Wii U has been on the market for a whole year more, so it's expected to have more exclusives right now.

I love my Wii U, but it's a fact that all Sony home consoles to date have had great libraries, exclusives and multiplatform games alike. So, based purely on a historical context, it's safe to assume the PS4 won't be different, and eventually get tons of tons of tons of exclusive games, as well as all the third party multiplats.

So... if someone wanted to buy a new gen console to play games right now, I'd recommend a Wii U with closed eyes. But if someone wanted to make a decision based on which console will probably end with the most content in the long run, I'd advice for a PS4.

On the other hand, I find it pretty hard to recomend an Xbox One, based on Microsoft's past consoles. Unless you're a really, really big Halo, Gears and Forza fan (admittedly, three pretty powerful franchises).

That didn't stop PS3 vs X360 in terms of exclusives.

Stop making excuses.

stragomccloud4051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

I think too many people are missing the point that I'm not comparing PS4 to Wii U. I'm comparing Ps4 and Wii U to PC.

The fact that one, PS4 and PC have a nearly identical library except for a few exclusives and two PC has it's own exclusives plus nearly unlimited backwards compatibility and emulation.

Yes Sony has amazing first party studios, but it's not enough to warrant the purchase of a PS4. At least not for at least 3 more years. For me, the winter 2009 was the time to buy a PS3 because by that time there were enough exclusives to justify buying the system, and the price of the system had also dropped considerably. I'll probably buy a PS4 in 2017 under the same conditions.

By the way, you're really kidding yourself if you think you can compare the quantity and quality of Sony software to the likes of Nintendo. You can try to argue, but there are similarly styled games to be had elsewhere. Nintendo first party exclusives have no equivalent, and if you think otherwise, you've clearly forgotten the love of video games that gamers used to share. I just don't understand why console gamers like to compare specs and argue about screen resolutions and frame rates. You'd think they'd jump on PC since it's apparently so important to them. Yet they don't. And then they berate other consoles for having less powerful specs while completely ignoring the fact that it is indeed the games and exclusives that matter. PS4/Xbox One/PC have similar libraries with the PC generally having the upper hand in the specs, while Wii U provides a unique experience on the few third party games it does have, plus top notch Nintendo games.

If you're arguing with a PC gamer about the games and the console that he or she might choose, you have to look at each of the consoles differently. You have to ignore every third party platform title on the PS4 and Xbox One, because remove those titles(i.e. ignore nearly every single game), and you'll see how the PC gamer views consoles. They are practically baron, save for one.

N4g_null4051d ago

I'm curious as to how many of those sony studios will stay afloat if the ps4 can't provide that hit. If we keep getting people leaving sony studios those exclusives you all are waiting on are in jeopardy. This same problem hit konami, sega, capcom, rare ware after the ms buy out.

Who do you think is going to be the first to buy the last of us and that team... Nintendo. Just look at fatal frame and sin and punishment.

Nintendo bails good teams out because they believe in only gaming... not movies specs or empty hype.

I don't mind the ps4 but like the Japanese I'll wait till sony makes me a game.

Also I don't care for gta... what skill is needed to play it? I don't even remember the other game I would be missing. LoL.

SpiralTear4051d ago

Pretty much. Once you get a solid gaming PC, console wars become petty and pathetic, since the only thing you really are looking out for in the console world is exclusives. My PC isn't even top-of-the-line and it can run a lot of recently released games no problem.

I wonder if there was any real need for you to say that?

King Nezz4051d ago

At least stragomccloud has the balls to state facts. I have a EVGA GTX 770 classified, and it shames both "Next gen" consoles. I also have a Wii U, and Nintendo will be putting out quality Nintendo products with great replay value. What has more replay value than Nintendo games, as Mario Kart or Smash? Let me guess, shooters? Not a fan boy, but I'm tired of people putting down the Wii U due to its lesser specs.

BlackWolf4051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

@King Nezz:
My response was meant for Geekman, not stragomccloud.

I'm not sure why I read that as "Still looks dumber than driveclub." Sorry for the disagree.

ermmm.... no, well cant really be compared but if compared by technical aspects such as texture quality, polycount etc then obviously drive club is better.

this game looks great but you are stupid.

Dubaman4051d ago

What if you compared other things which are important to a game like, gee i don't know, the fun factor and replay value? I find it baffling you can call someone else stupid when you forget those important aspects. Also, art style over "graphics".

hkgamer4051d ago

@dubaman

I just presumed when he said something looked better he meant graphically.

Like how if i said A person looks better than B. you would presume I meant cosmetically and not their personality.

For that i should apologize to cab1802, since i thought he said mk8 looked better.

art style over graphics. I understand and think that is an important factor. but cant really compare art especially these 2 games that is totally different in terms of looks and gameplay.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot726d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr726d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt726d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky725d ago (Edited 725d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long725d ago (Edited 725d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
