GameSpy: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Preview

GameSpy writes: "The Command & Conquer series has always been as much about the experience and setting as the actual strategic gameplay. Half the fun of a C&C game is checking out which B-movie actors will be chewing up scenery in the game's cut-scenes and which piece of wacko technology the developers were able to cobble into a workable unit. After the series split back in 1996 between Red Alert and the Tiberium series, both sides of the franchise began to evolve in different directions. The Tiberium series, the "straighter" of the two (as epitomized by C&C3 and the recent Kane's Wrath x-pack), has always carried itself with a wink-and-a-nod pseudo-gravitas. Based on our recent visit to EA's Los Angeles studio, the latest iteration of Red Alert is going for out-and-out crazy.

The basic premise of the Red Alert universe is that it's the result of a time-travel experiment in which Albert Einstein eliminates a young Adolf Hitler from the timeline. The result is a very different World War II in which the Allies (now including Germany) face off against Joe Stalin and the Soviet Union. Red Alert 2 brought this struggle to the modern day with a sneak attack by the Soviets against the continental United States. Now, in Red Alert 3, the Allies are marching on Moscow. In a last-ditch effort to avoid defeat, the Soviet leadership uses an old time machine to eliminate a young Albert Einstein, once again altering the present. The good news is, they save the Soviet Union. The bad news is that the Allies are still around and they've been joined by a third power -- the Empire of the Rising Sun -- in a three-way fight for global dominance."

Spiffy:
-Comedic presentation
-Bizarre units
-Emphasis on naval combat
-Radial control for Xbox 360

Iffy:
-Will the "casual" and comedic skew reduce the depth of strategy?

Top 10 Worst Video Game Sequels

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "A while ago we counted down the very best video game sequels of all time and so we decided to flip the table and look at the very worst sequels ever made. Now we’re not specifically looking at bad sequels to bad games, that would be boring, instead we’re looking at sequels that took what was present in a good game and completely wrecked it. These 10 games started out by building up our hype to extreme levels only to shatter our dreams and break out hearts once we got our hands on them and so we’re calling these out as the worst sequels ever made."

Dragon age 2 was not a bad game, just a terrible sequel if that makes any sense. Should have been it's own IP.

I loved Dragon Age II. I even got the platinum trophy for it. That was the very first medieval themed fantasy RPG that I enjoyed aside from an Ultima game I played in the early 90's at a cousins house.

Not that it was a bad game, just not a fair successor to DAO.

NapalmSanctuary2653d ago

Surely Twisted Metal 3&4 have earned a place on this list.

Lord of Shadows 2 was one that left me scratching my head because I loved the first one! Red Faction Armageddon was another one that I still wonder why they didn't just give us something more like Guerrilla.

Halo Wars 2 and 5 Strategy Games for Console That Also Weren't Rubbish

OX writes: "Halo Wars 2 is a Halo game in which instead of controlling one big space soldier, you control lots of little space soldiers from high above the battlefield. It's a real-time strategy game, yes. But aren't strategy games on consoles always terrible? Not always, as we discover in Show of the Week."
