SegmentNext.com- The first Dark Souls was without a doubt a brilliant game and set a high bar for its followup title. It has to be asked though, did the second installment do justice to the franchise?
Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.
DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.
The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.
I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.
I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
TheGamer writes, "Some weapons resist the test of time."
The Nerd Stash: “Whether you’re here to gloat about your victories or to see what the fuss is about, we present to you the hardest bosses in the Souls series.”
Regardless it's still a very excellent game, and if true about a "B Team" they did a swell job.
I wish gamers weren't so quick to call foul when a different team develops a sequel/prequel. Bioshock 2 and Arkham Origins were both great, and the upcoming Borderlands The Pre-Sequel looks awesome.
It still is an amazing game. If this B team did this, they did a fantastic job.
I'm loving DS2 but it doesn't feel as special as the first two games, even the bosses are all abit "meh" The majority of DS2 is just recycled assets from the first two Souls games (I HATE the lift noises)
That's not to say it's a bad thing, more of the same is better than totally screwing it up I guess
Come on Hidetaka Miyazaki, announce your next game already
Funny how "B-Team" has such a negative connotation with it. As far as a grade's concerned, always though it'd be "D-Team." XD
When you went from demon's souls to dark souls it felt like it moved the series forward but also felt like a necessary upgrade in the process. playing dark souls 2 not only feels underwhelming but the it hasn't moved the series forward at all imo. It just felt like i was playing something that wanted to be a true to the souls series but in the end felt artificial. I think that sums up dark souls 2 for me "artificial". I really hope that miyazaki directs the next souls game whether it be demon's souls 2, dark souls 3 or newly titled souls game.
