Looking Back: Call of Duty 4

Recently my colleagues have been focused on looking at upcoming games, so I thought I'd have a look at what was, for me, the most engrossing game of last year: Call Of Duty 4.

Now, if I would of written this article a few months ago, I would of come off as a rabid fanboy, in fact, it took Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to break the spell of this game, where I would regularly play from 10pm when I got home from work, until the sun came up and me and my team grudgingly dragged ourselves to bed.

On the PC market, the game seems to share the success of its Console counterparts, with Xfire stating that 6,909,213 minutes of the multiplayer game have been played today, second only to the online behemoth that is WoW.

I think when we look back on this generation, this will be one of many defining games.

It managed to kill Halo 3 as king of online last year. I imagine it will be played until CoD6 (unless 5 mananges to not suck).

Very far from it in my opinion. This game was very, very fun, but thats it. I know that we should play games for fun, but this game did nothing (well at least in my eye) to really push the envelope forward.

MP is simple fun, No more no less.
SP basic as all hell, The one thing I do give this game is story and presentation of said story. Everything else was really lacking. A.I. is generic and only follow what is scripted on both sides, Mission layout, your in a box for most of them, go left, go right, up and down but you never leave that box.

This game was good but I believe the hype of it not being a WW2 game made by the "KINGS" of WW2 games is what really drove the success of this game.

In the end the story and presentation is the only thing CoD4 brought to the table in a new fashion, everything else is well made but it has been done before.

...but for slightly different reasons:

1. Too many underage players playing it on-line now.
2. The lobby system. I still can't believe how many reviews praise what is essentially a multiplayer game that features such a sub-par multiplayer lobby system.

I would rate this game as follows:
- Single Player Campaign - 7/10. Fun but forgettable with no real replay value.
- Multiplayer - 9/10. Fun and addictive as hell when you end up in a good room where the host does not quit because he/she is getting beat upon.
- Multiplayer Lobby - 5/10. COD3 had a better lobby.

Within means of course...school,work,sleep,etc take precedence. I feel the article hits the mark in explaining why COD4 is so phenomenal... So much in fact that it is hard to play other multiplayer games I own (Orange Box, Resistance, Halo 3, Warhawk, etc) without wanting to level up and play some more Team Deathmatch (standard or hardcore). Halo 3 comes to mind most vividly; I started it up tonight after COD4. I love the Halo universe and there are so many things I wish would change...some of them inspired by COD4. Halo 3 feels slow pace after playing COD4; I have to switch to one or the other for a while as its difficult to transition. Recently, the pacing was extremely frustrating as it feels as though there is no sense of speed. Spartans are supposed to run 40-50 km per hr and the game makes you feel like your a grandpa Spartan. Also, there are far fewer instances of "any second you could die" adrenaline rush. Granted I am stretching logic a little...but in COD4 you feel like a mortal person and not an almighty bullet sponge with a shield. I still love Halo, but I wish it incorporated the HUD/damage indicators and sprinting found in COD4. I should have posted a blog. Sorry for the rant.

...put the Halo 3 lobby system on the COD4 multiplayer gameplay and you'd have an almost perfect multiplayer experience.

I prefer the way Warhawk does online play personally.

beavis4play6241d ago

so when the author says "most engrossing game" i can't agree. bioshock/uncharted/RaC:ToD were the ones i couldn't play enough.

This guy put down COD4 to play R6V:2. Vegas 2 was complete garbage. I was so looking foward to Vegas 2 and was totally let down. It's such a "broken" game.

COD4 is still and probably will be the best shooter on any system for a very long time.

Will be interesting to see what sort of numbers GP users draw in come tomorrow. It is believed that this is one many have been waiting for.

Darth,

That is not accurate; this game is old, and most people who want it have already bought it. You might get a small number of subs, but we will mostly see a good influx of players(not new subs) from people with Game Pass who will try it, which is what happened with D4.

CoD: BO 6 will be the test for actual sub numbers.

darthv72339d ago

That's fair... seeing as many have been saying they want CoD in GP. My comment was more of , now that its here... what can it do. Im sure there will be other titles in the franchise that will either entice or turn off different users.

No one's buying a console and signing up for a monthly bill just to get this game to avoid buying it. That's ridiculous. Besides everyone bagged the crap out of this on release for the 4 hour campaign.

andy85339d ago

Sweet. Never got round to it on release. I'll give the campaign a go

Severly underrated game. Big improvement over 2.

Why MW 2019 is still the best looking Call of Duty to date

MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.
