Ultra HD, the next generation of high definition video and audio, which has been in development for several years, could be in production as soon as the year 2011 or 2012, according to Philips...
People thought that every generation all the way back to the very first televisions in the 40's. They thought that tiny little blue picture was all they needed and they couldn't imagine wanting anything better.
It won't stop even when the picture on the television is no longer distinguishable from real life, because you'll still need a higher definition to increase the size of the screen without losing image quality.
With Ultra-high definition your TV can be the size of a wall. And if you think people don't need a TV as one of their walls then you haven't been watching the natural progress of television size.
...but not at a consumer level for some time after 2011. I dare say retailers would prefer its kept on the quiet also as the current flat panels (and variations of them) will be a cash cow for at least another 6 or 10 years.
1080p is fine for now but give it a few years when 100" displays become the norm consumers will be demanding higer resolutions. Big problem is, will other technologies (i.e. cable/satellite netwroks, etc) other than PCs be ready to support them?
sony will be creating a console with a resolution of 7680 x 4320, 240fps, 5D graphics, quadruple hdmi outputs, and a flux capacitor to enable owners to go back in time to play ps1,2,and 3 games.
I am with you. 1080 is more than enough. I don't want a TV that is larger than my entire living room. I like the better quality they are going for, but why do they keep getting bigger. I am happy with what is out there now. I haven't even gotten a TV with support for 1080 or 720 yet. I understand that picture and stuff will be better, but can't you just update the TV's and not scale them to be more massive? I mean we will only see one TV on a wall in the store eventually if we keep upping the scale of them.
I would want a TV with that high a resolution. If they make it then people will make Video to support the resolution. The next version of Blu-Ray maybe.
EDIT: Disregard last comment he has already been banned before I saw the avatar.
1-even HD display technology isnt perfect (PURE black,178' REAL view angle, full RGB ..) 2-OLED displays are near perfect but their price isnt affordable 3-storage media (perhaps Blu-ray 100 or 200 will be enough ) 4-players and Computers boundwidth ( BD players have 55 Mb/s BW , for that resolution GOD knows how many Mb/s will be needed )
I think its impossible to have Ultra HD displays and players in 2011 with reasonable price..
all I want is a 60" OLED HD display (EDIT :for under 3000$ price) :D
Well, since the trend naturally is to go bigger and better, I think external upscalers will see a rise in sales in the future. Although those will be a challenge on their own, upscaling a normal DVD to Ultra HD in realtime will take a lot of processing power.
That would be the equivalent of giving someone a master print if they gave you a 4K scan on a disc. There is no way in bloody blazes that will happen, at least in our lifetime.
I can see live broadcasts and such, but not movies.
...Where have you been the last 20 years? I bet you thought VHS was all we'd ever need. Then said DVDs were all we'd ever need. Now you think Blu-rays are it for the rest of your life? Are you planning on dying before 2012?
I bet you think we'll never need more than 8 GBs of RAM too.
My point was that the *studios* won't want to release movies at that resolution. It's essentially handing over a film print to the consumer. With Blu-Ray the video can be extremely close to a 2K master if done correctly. If they start making discs that can do 6k, it would be an *exact* archive of a 6k scan. Would studios want to give that to the consumer? I highly doubt it.
it's actually funny that porn distributors are complaining about HD quality a little bit. they are saying it shows too many blemishes and imperfections... and if you seen a lot of porn or hell... is married for all that matters, you know what i'm talkin about.
u must never have been with a woman if u think that HD porn has too much detail... how much detail do you think is there when you are actually looking at a girls parts??? its not all airbrushed and blurred detail.... id love to see this tv being released but i cant see it anywhere under $50,000 by 2011
I am a techie and I embrace new and fascinating tech. People are thinking in the now and not the future. Sure 1080P is superb and the best to date, but it will be older tech in a few years. I remember when S-video then component was the best and people thought it could not get any better, but now....
I understand where you're coming from on this, but at the same time both satellite and (especially) cable operators are struggling to find the bandwidth for 1080i broadcasts.
Comcast is adding all sorts of 1080i channels to their lineup, but at the expense of picture quality of the channels they already had. In the last six months, I have noticed that compression artifacts are FAR more noticeable, and you can tell that the color depth has been dropped on the signal (LOTS of color banding).
I can only imagine what you would see with Ultra HD broadcasts... The technology may be available by 2011, but I'm willing to bet that it will not be ready for prime-time until 2015 or later...
It will take a long time for 1080p HD to become the status quo in every household, if it ever DOES become super-saturated. Nevermind a new HD-HD that will further segment the consumer-base at large.
I really don't think that "Ultra HD" will be that much of a huge difference from 1080p HD visually. HDTV's haven't even become standard yet and a lot of people still can't afford them. Watching television in 3-D should be the next step, now that's something cool.
I Predict PS3 and blu-ray will be the first to really use this technology to its full advantage, 360 wouldnt stand a chance what with the cheap pathetic exuse for hardware they use
HAHAH wait gta 4 on the ps3 was 640P(360 740P) haze is 534p and most games on the ps3 as qouted buy asn articles seem blurrier than most 360 multiplats and you think the ps3 will ever reaCH this rezz dude climb down sony di*c* your to high up it atm.
The Market is barely saturated with 720p Content much less then 1080p. Expect ULTRA HD to appear 2016. With little to no market penetration. 1080p looks great on a 60inch screen. What will you need for UHD...?? minimum 100inch screen?
is fine as is with 1080p but really the next revolution should be something else like 3d holograms in High Def. Is there really any point going over 1080p in 2d?.
At Ultra coming at about 100+ gigs. We will be back to square one with DD. This is why i always say Physical media will be around for much longer than some DD advocates are claiming. Fact is content size are always increasing.
PS3 has firmware and believe it or not all blue-ray movies don't barely support 1080P native they support them without a problem.
But I do think that if they release these Ultra HDtvs people will think technology is ridiculous because we have just gotten 1080P and I believe they should give 1080P a good 5 year lifespan. Look at 7.1 channels uncompressed they aint going like they wanted because people now think that in 6 months 8.1 channels will be out 3 months later 10.1.
i work in the movie industry. and we already work with 4k equipment. hd - 2k -4k and there is 8k (already used in some japan studios). so they never sold the HD 1080p as the state of the art stuff. it's just about selling new tv's and media. they publicize something as the next big thing, and 5 years after they say its not good enough... because they already know about the future 5 or 6 generations of HD quality.
I dont even have a HDTV and there already thinking about a even bigger resolution. If it does come out itll cost as much as a Bentley and only rich bastards will be able to afford it.I mean where would you put it on the wall that thing is HUGE and unnecessary noone needs a tv that big.
Sony has OLED, Blu-ray (3D Now), Playstation, etc. Sony is in the best position technology wise to make a new console. OLED is the next big thing after LCD. Blu-ray already coming out in 3D and pretty soon ultra high definition. PS3 give it 4 more years and a PS4 will come out guaranteed. Doesn't matter to me I'm gonna own the next best thing regardless. SONY FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the time that happens, movie theaters will be obsolete compared to home theaters. Forget a 2 story blurry projection when you can have a 2 story HDTV quality movie of Iron Man 3.
I don't see the point of releasing this kind of technology yet when the present TV manufacturers are struggling to make this generation.
Anyone that has a 1080p new generation TV will notice issues with any of the makes that are out there.
Samsung has stutter, humbar and 24hz issues, Philips with blurring, Sony with having 3 lines across the screen, etc.
The 100hz generation has been pathetic to say the least and they still havent perfected Blacks on LCD.
So bringing out bigger specs is pointless until they sort out this one. Those who disagree, go read up on peoples views across the net on hardware forums. 1080p TVs are not perfect yet, maybe to new users but each new technology added to this generation has caused problems.
Why would anyone, especially technophiles at a website such as this, be AGAINST the natural progression of television technology and resolution. I don't want advancement to stop until i'm INSIDE THE WORLD I'M VIEWING.
Higher HD isn't the next step, higher immersion is. Wrap around screens, 3d viewing, virtual worlds etc. Not a super duper clear picture. We have a clumsy technology-base at best with current HD as it is, between 1080i/720p, 100Hz/66Hz, poor HD compression from limited bandwidth from cable providers, widespread aging infrastructures. I mean, for crying out loud, the new debate with HD storage isn't WHICH HD disc is going to rule, it's whether Blu Ray will EVER completely wipe out DVD.
What no one that I have seen, and I may have missed a comment or two, is that regardless of this UltraHD capacity, if it comes out in 2011.. it'll cost 20,000 USD to buy one... then MAYBE it'll be cost efficient by 2015. By the time we are all ready for our next HDTV, this one will be ready, and maybe in a brand I trust like Samsung, Hitatchi, or Sony.
honestly i dont think its doing any good....first full HD(1080P) is being hyped...and now this...
Tv stations actually need content with that size.....
Its all bad bad bad bad!!
Is not HYPE, 1080i is maybe because you really cant tell between 720p and 1080i but huge difference in 1080p. Thats the real deal. However until HD-TVs becomes standard in every1s homes and until DTV takes over even higher res than 1080p is really unnecessary atm because nothing will support it and no1 would want to fork over the money for 1. Things barely support 1080p.
I cant WAIT to get my hands on a TV this Phenominal.
I hope the next game systems can support even HALF this resolution. I will be an extremely happy young man if this turns out right. I should probably start saving for this bad boy right now.
A monitor that can take up my interior wall and a reason to have quad SLI! Or even octa SLI or some thing. We all knew it was coming and yes there is hardware ready for this. Just think PCs will be sold with 16 gigs of ram soon! Over 20 cores and bandwidth galore!
A set like this has to have an up scaler in it because the minute you put an old DVD on it people will freak...LOL
the only place your gonna see this stuff is in stadiums and giant billboards , there is no real point to have this rez unless your gonna get yourself a 150 inch + tv
But is 7680 x 4320 really necessary? I mean 1080P is more then enough for me.
What's the point in going above 1080p when nothing supports it, Blu-ray, PS3 & Xbox 360 are the only HD sources and they only go upto 1080p.
right now there is some limitations :
1-even HD display technology isnt perfect (PURE black,178' REAL view angle, full RGB ..)
2-OLED displays are near perfect but their price isnt affordable
3-storage media (perhaps Blu-ray 100 or 200 will be enough )
