Why Nintendo Will Stand When The Rest Fall

Say what you want about Nintendo and the Wii U but one thing you can not deny is that Nintendo has a strict focus on gameplay experience.

"gaming is enjoyed by men in women in their late 20′s" I know what he meant; just a funny typo.

Good article.

DarthZoolu4076d ago

What a reach! Any company that doesn't follow what gamers want can fail

randomass1714076d ago

lol Derp. That was good for a laugh. :)

deafdani4076d ago

Well, I love gaming in women in their late 20's. The claim is not inaccurate.

chronoforce4076d ago

Sounds rather uncomfortable for both parties.

If Nintendo took risks, we would be seeing new IP left and right. Fine, if nintendo is so confident in taking risks,I dare them to not release a mario or zelda game next year and instead release a new IP.

Now ask yourself would nintendo be willing to put away a guaranteed money maker for a while to build up a new property? The big three all bring very different additions to the game industry. All of them have been beneficial to our hobby. Nintendo keeps the fun, and forces us to remember that is what gaming is all about. They make new strides in gameplay. Microsoft brings new innovations and upgrades to multiplayer gaming, and helps open new ways to connect gamers together. Just look at xbox live last gen, that blew up pretty big and party chat is now a standard. Sony always strives to push the boundaries of storytelling in ways we haven't seen before. Games like the last of us, uncharted and heavy rain are movie/T.V quality stories. They're focused on memorable moments and characters liek ratchet and clank, Sly cooper, Nathan Drake, Ellie, Colonel Radec, etc

Like I said,a ll three bring innovations to gaming. They each have strengths and weaknesses, but the exploitation of those weaknesses are due to the state of the market. Gamers/consumers can be fickle in what they want, this is because fads change, interests change and yes, kids do grow up. The market is looking for experiences that Xbox One and PS4 can provide. Not to say Wii U can't be successful, it can carve out it's own niche but the lion's share of the market is PC/PS4/XB1. You can't say that's a coincidence and that people are stupid for wanting what they want. That's their choice if they don't value the same gaming stuff that you do.

plaZeHD4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

They take risks more than any other in this industry, but they are not stupid.
For every innovative game/risk there needs to be a game or at least something to fund it, or else they will end up like SEGA.

randomass1714076d ago

New IPs are not always a good business strategy, especially when Nintendo's generally go unnoticed. Frankly it's just as much of a risk to bring back an IP that hasn't been touched in ages. For example, would creating a new original title be any more risky than making Ice Climbers 2 on Wii U? It's hard not to call Nintendo's current business model a risk since most of the successful games out there are for older gamers but Nintendo continuously caters to a family audience. Mario and Zelda are very successful in a mostly violent game oriented industry. That's pretty interesting, I think.

for we are many4076d ago (Edited 4076d ago )

Nintendo takes risks where it counts and that is in Gameplay mechanics and art style, not just by making "New characters and story" and duct-taping them to the same linear QTE-fest derivative gameplay like others do. Nintendo introduces new gameplay ideas and sometimes radically different art/visual style in nearly every iteration of their major franchises, take Zelda for example, from 2D to 3D, from top-view to 3rd person, realistic to cell shaded to pastel colors, z-targeting, touch control, motion control and dual screen, etc. Doing all this and more while still managing to be considered the gold standard in quality for almost 30 years, one should simply give credit where credit is due.

Gemmol4076d ago

stop smoking, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Music, are all new ip's.......theres a ton more, all the new ip's lets just say you do not like, so instead of saying Nintendo do not make new ip's change it to Nintendo do not make ip's that I like. This is a much better way to get your point across, because if you say it the other way you and everyone else who agree with your post would look like an idiot, which is the majority of people who make articles on here or people who assume they know the specs on the Wii U. Please do not get offended by what I said, I mean no harm, just clearing up your words, for the people who do know all of nintendo new ip's I say congrats to you all already. I know someone will comment back on what I said about the system specs, so I will say what I said in my other post, all the post I seen about Wii U specs are assumptions, I have not seen one person show me any facts, only estimations and etc that are not 100 percent facts, like how Sony showed of the ps4 specs, that is 100 percent fact, the numbers everyone post for wii u is not 100 percent, just estimations. I am not saying its stronger then ps4/xbox 1, all I am saying I have not seen any concrete facts, just like I said in my other post even the people who open up the Wii U first when it first came out said it was heavily customized they did not know themselves...now back to the original topic, check it out Nintendo create many new Ip's, just look them up.....my new favorite one from them is The Last Story Wii, I missed out on having a Wii so learning that the Wii U can play wii games bring me pure joy, its one of my top favorite RPG now, if they make part 2 I will preorder today even if it comes out 4 years later

millzy1024076d ago

The Wonderful 101, that game was a huge risk and new ip so stop your gibberish

LOL_WUT4076d ago

How was that much of a risk? Didn't Nintendo ship like a certain amount of copies at launch? Even they didn't believe in their own game. ;)

truechainz4076d ago

Miyamoto already confirmed to be working on one. Also new IP does not necessarily mean innovation and risk. If you don't consider the gamepad to be a risky move by nintendo then I don't know what you would. It was a bet that could've gone better if they marketed the focus and taken more times to show use in games, but overall is was a bet that they were destined to lose. Now they can take the hit and try harder to be fully prepared next time.

N4g_null4076d ago

Most of the new ip are on the stronger platform, handheld. Fanboys will downplay any none successful while putting up a mediocre new ip on a sony console it seems because they like stories. Yet don't seem to read books because sony stories are subpar most of the time. If Nintendo does merge the handheld and home console then suddenly you no longer have to make two mario and two zeldas... the one game will work on both. Now you will get to see the nintendo I grew up with, where new ip came at you right and left. They have just been building the platform for this to happen.

Fatal frame does scary movie better than most. Luigi mansion does comedy better than most. Nintendo does innovative game play better than most. Nintendo also makes more types of games. Where is sony rts, rpg, 2d adventure, puzzle games, local multilayer games, imaginative action adventure, creative simulation games. An impressive looking story based game doesnt change the fact that sony does know gaming. The key word is game, you know something you can play over again and get a new experience from by playing creatively and getting better at it.

There was a panel on online gaming and designers are reeling from the lowering of skill have and gamers not wanting to play their games and need online just to have fun. These same gamers call themselves hard core but seek achievements like grade schoolers rather than true skill. The only local gamers left are story buffs. This is why ms created rise... If heavy rain is a great game then rise should have been up your ally. Lots of gamers give sony the story bias which is all they have now. The power game is going to get old if account gaming is done by the major ip holders in this industry.

Then you have them perfecting motion control in hardware and in their own engines. The wii fit u, resort, play, sports and the current club online play gives them great motion control gaming test online now. It is all done without extra power being taken away from gaming. This is a missing link any vr headset will have.

Once the os thing is setup you have an nes type of situation. Nintendo could offer radical different features while the core features still work.

The ip is hardware and software based and they both work. Once the duplication of games is not needed think about getting double the amount of games just from nintendo and of course a console pokemon would suddenly make sense.

Thats not what the article was saying. This article was just in defense to what Nintendo has to offer the industry.

stragomccloud4076d ago

I think anyone who really follows the industry already knows this, and also knows, we are seriously racing to another crash. Nintendo seems to be the only one that won't fall into the trap since they refuse to enter the industry hurting system of bribing for content.

randomass1714076d ago

^One of the few companies to never handle DLC in a poor manner and always offers full gaming experiences for one's money. I think that's pretty undeniable of them in the end.

plaZeHD4076d ago

I absolutely agree with you, video games are becoming more and more expensive for publishers to manufacture and for consumers to gain access to, and this will lead to a big crash.
I mean we are at point were we have to pay another 60$ every year, to play a game we have already paid for.

N4g_null4076d ago

One of the few companies that let online be free and includes backwards compatibility because they actually have a legacy of great games that are not popular based on hype or online. I must golf clap to the pr teams that where able to turn gaming on consoles into sub budget pc gaming... where the consoles are devoid of any real console games. You have to ask why is Nintendo the only company allowing pc vs console online play. If ms or sony did this then they are afraid gamers will realize online is so much better on a real pc. Nintendo isn't afraid of this...... why? They make console games not pc games.

There is a reason why ps1 2 games are not fun to play anymore because few where actually fun it was all graphical hype. The same can be said of the neo geo and I loved that system. Yet i rebuy nes snes n64, ngc games and love my wii catalog. It was the art the game play... not the story or graphical tech.

Really it is just showing that investors and new gamers just don't know what was really fun about gaming. The gaming press doesn't seem to be smart or old enough to bring up these topics. Basically we got a bunch of posers because nintendo stopped making console like games for a few years. The n64 issue is still being fixed today.

It is possible nintendo is saving it's best for the big crash? Could nintendo be waiting out sony as they die wearing an expensive suit of praise?

Id use to complain about movie industry waste from movie cgi artists. Now these guy are the norm. None of them can draw or do handcrafted animation. The programmers don't want to learn the best practices.... they would rather copy and paste. It may take the industry crashing for the talent to come back.

Yet the Indie scene is looking good. Nintendo best move is realizing we have a bunch of money chasers rather than creative smart people. Indies don't get a salary and spend most of their time trying not to do work. You make what you love till others love it or die!

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling the PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv7211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX11d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK11d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog10d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Congratulations Nintendo on finding the happy medium between their weak console and their invincible handheld plus learning from Sony and clearly defining the new console from the old unlike their Wii and Wii U just add a higher number simple yet effective 👍👍

victorMaje11d ago

Are people that keen on $90 games?
Is it true some remasters will also be $90?

DankSinatra11d ago

Tell me you don't research without telling me you don't research.

victorMaje10d ago

Nope. I didn’t research, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles and I had read on here something about $90 games on switch 2, so I guess it’s good now, people can calm down. Have a nice day :)

1nsomniac11d ago

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex11d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje10d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Sgt_Slaughter9d ago

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

cool
wasnt expecting it not to sell well

Profchaos11d ago

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire8611d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos11d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire8611d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr10d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire8610d ago

It’s funny how I got disagrees for speaking the truth for what I experienced getting the Switch 2. Nintendo had more copies of Switch 2 than Sony for the PS5.

Don’t be butthurt about this very fact. People on here disagreeing with crazy reasons lol

hiawa2311d ago

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos11d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker11d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg10d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

gold_drake11d ago

to be where fair, we had a current gen come out during covid ha

repsahj10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I remembered I tried 7 pre-order events during the PS5 launch. I gave up and ended up buying 1 from a scalper. But now, I already secured 1 pre-order Switch 2 unit in my country very easy and without problems.

Neonridr10d ago

kudos to Nintendo for ensuring a healthy amount of stock.

Yeah doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility as long as they have enough supply.

Si-Fly42d ago

Do people buy each other games consoles for Thanksgiving? I’m in Europe and always assumed it was just Christmas where gifts were exchanged.

Skate-AK42d ago

I don't think it's so much Thanksgiving, but that Black Friday is the day after.

darthv7242d ago (Edited 42d ago )

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx41d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS41d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
