T1 - Ubisoft Animation Director, Colin Graham, has confirmed via the Ubiblog that the animations in Watch Dogs are so varied and diverse that players “will never see the same thing twice, guaranteed.”
This is really interesting. A game that constantly recycles the same animations really pulls me out of the experience.
Guaranteed? That's a big word, I don't think he should use that ...we're not quite there yet.
They are using procedural generation for a lot of the animations. So when he says you never see the same thing twice, he's probably right. He said they have over 3000 different profiles in the cities that can combine randomly to create new people. So a John Smith and a Brenda Johnson may turn into a Brad Johnson and Brenda Smith. With different occupations, different lifestyles, etc. Watch the long video from PAX East 2014 and you will see exactly what he is talking about. How people react to not only you, but to other people around them. That is all recorded footage from the PS4 dev kit running via a video on the PC in front of the screen. So no, it's not PC footage, that is exactly what the PS4 game is going to look like. https://m.youtube.com/watch... Though the footage is blurry, you can see how high-quality the visuals are and you can see the reactions of people in any given situation.
... That moment when someone says something so grandiose that it casts doubt on everything else they said on the matter.
I hope this game lives up to the hype. We need innovations.
While mathematically 3000 generated variations might never be equal to another, human brain is waaay above this capacity when it comes to filtering out similarities.
not sure if that promise will hold up.
Yeah, they can't guarantee something like that for a game that's on current and previous generation platforms.
Maybe he knows something we don't.
wonder if all that processing power into animations means the npc dialog is equally varied or they all say something like "..then I took an arrow to the knee"
Agreed. The headline only made me think of other grandiose dev claims that didn't pan out in reality. I think there should be an entry in Urban Dictionary about it… Molyneux - A claim made about a feature or features of an unreleased pc or console game that won't appear in the final product. Can refer to the claim or the phantom feature itself. On the bright side, since it's guaranteed, we can all demand a full refund the first time we see something repeated. Of course we won't get that refund, but we can demand it anyway. ; ) I will (almost) guarantee we'll all see things repeated in the game.
I'll take him up on that, ok mister £1000 says you're talking out of your ass!
I like how the director emphasises this as "next-gen" features but forgets that this is a cross-gen game. What of the PS3/360 versions? Are they getting "next-gen" treatment too?
Just like The Lords of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor, Watchdogs's PS3/360 version will get gimped, because both consoles have limitations. The only reason why next gen is getting these features, because developers can push more stuff in these next gen versions than last gen.
"A game that constantly recycles the same animations really pulls me out of the experience." Cough! Cough! THIEF! Fun stealth game, but boy was I over seeing his hands reach in and steal the loot every time. It was the same animation, over and over and over smh.
I don't know... every time he whips out his phone, kinda' looks like the same animation to me.
He lied, the phone, animation and the cake.
-_- you're kidding right.... the game has several thousand different character profiles, 100 hacks, lots of different vehicles, Possibly varied parkour moves And you pick on the animation of pulling a phone from his pocket....which to be honest i don't know how many ways you can pull a phone from a pocket without go to the extreme!
I was joking. More specifically, I was being facetious. Apparently the people who disagreed with me didn't get that.
Do you remember those little finger skateboard toys that were popular several years ago? Lol I was imagining Aiden pulling out his phone and flipping it around with his fingers like one of those skateboard toys. Lol trying to do ollies and kick flips. Haha
Next generation phone pulling animation! Only in Watch Dogs! lol I kid. I'm sure there will be a lot of variety. It's just a big claim on Ubisoft's part.
Scenario: you're standing on one leg. On the seat of a bicycle riding in circles while balanced on the back of that giant mecha-spider we saw during one of the videos of the game. As this is all going on, you look at a random kid licking his ice cream on the street below, whip the phone out, point at him with it, and say "Bang!" as the ice cream falls out of his hands and his jaw drops. Then proceed to use your phone as normal. Epic.
Will they refund my $$$ if I happen to see the same thing twice?
Yes! ...but the refund must be processed through UPlay. So, Ubisoft will never actually issue a refund.
Ooooh maybe I'll get enough U Points to dress up Aidan like Altair!
Or... perhaps you can cash in points for ring tones and wallpapers for your in-game phone! Serious note: I have SO many UPlay points built up and waiting for the first game that I really want to spend them on. Far Cry 4? Maybe they'll replace bitcoin and I'll be a millionaire!
Dude, I drove to Valve's corporate building and demanded a refund at gunpoint when I saw similar zombie death animations in Left 4 Dead 2. Totally worth it. D:<
Big words, now prove it. Guess we will find out soon. So freaking excited for this game.
Definitely a "Peter Molyneux" kind of statement lol we will see.
It certainly is. Colin Graham will claim that he was actually possessed by Molyneux before making this statement.
Sounded more like a Randy Pitchford statement to me.
Haha yea Pitchford too
oh boy words that might bite them in ass later on
This game seems to be heading in the right direction again after a great start and a sticky middle april's been dryer than a nuns naughty bits for me and im banking on WD being a great game next month and delivering some great moments.pre order still intact and im happy with that.
Great, now that he has said this some prick with nothing but time on his/her hands is going to do nothing but look at character animations until they find something. Just so they have something to complain about.
3 people so far have that planned, they didn't like that I called them out.
Some people take claims like that as a challenge. So now some people will probably be looking for similar animations to prove it wrong. Remember the next-gen fish AI fiasco for CoD: Ghosts? Video was uploaded showing the same thing in Mario 64. :P
STAHP! That fish AI was awesome! lol
Shouldn't make such an outrageous claim if you cannot back it up.. especially when such a claim may be the reason why a consumer purchases this game
If that is the sole reason why you or anyone else would be the game then they are looking for a reason to complain. I would consider that person mentally challenged. Having an ego so bad that you have to prove someone wrong when they say something, just so you can be right, is a mental disorder. It's called stupidity.
I'm pretty sure this is an exaggeration.
We'll see about that...
I'm pretty sure he's not saying you won't see the same animation twice, but that you won't see the exact same situation twice. Say there are 5 people around you and you punch one in the face, they will react differently than if you did that with 5 different people. The immense amount of animations contribute to this.
Exactly and not only situation, also every NPC will have their unique background/profile.
But...what if I watch a cutscene twice?
Maybe its like the 2002 film the ring,be warned lol
Be interesting to but it to the test
More big talk. In truth, the 10 "different" profiles will just be recycled from another batch of 10 "different" profiles depending on the variables set in the game - current event in story, time of day and area. Game design 101. Trick the player, leading them to believe your game is dynamic. Keep things different for 2 hours and the player will not care anymore if the game recycles anything after that. Before anyone wants to say: "how do you know? have you played the game?!" Well, just look at every other open world/sandbox game and the promises that many of the devs has given.
idk what you are referring to. "Profiles" is the small text that you see when you point your reticle on the NPC.It is a little background story for the NPC.When you see that profile it will get "deleted",so you won't see it again and the names are randomly generated. NPCs are generated from 3000 different features, you can see similar models but with different clothes or different face features.
Read the article again, the person who typed that doesn't know what he is talking about. He was misinterpreted. He wasn't talking about animations when he said “You Will Never See The Same Thing Twice, Guaranteed”. He was talking about the NPCs and the way they are generated into the world and they behaviour. You will see the same animations but they will be more diverse.Like in FC3 you had 5 takedown animations, here you will have the same amount but for every weapon. Also for the movement, animation will adjust depending on the object you are vaulting/jumping over and speed of movement also affects the animation. For instance,if you are running you will slide over the hood of a car but if you are standing or in cover you will roll over it. Please, fix the description.
Good spot, he was talking about the combination of behaviours and animations. While the article on the Ubiblog actually groups this all under "animation" because of how it links together, I've tweaked the text accordingly for clarity.
First and foremost, I enjoyed the read. I have been playing through Dark Souls 2(first experience with the franchise, I couldn't be more in love), and FF XIV(on ps4) with my friend. After another month of these games I think it is going to feel really, really satisfying to be holding a gun in a modern city. Although my hype was never HIGH for Watch Dogs, I always found the idea truly fascinating. Though playing playing the swords and magic games has got me itching for Watch Dogs. I'm definitely going to be getting this upon it's release.
I have the biggest urge to call BS, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Completely hyped for this game still.
Sounds good if true. What I wonder about is do the NPC's have purpose, are they going somewhere or can you follow them forever. Seems like I read somewhere that they go to jobs and they will be at certain locations at certain hours of the day. I may be dreaming though..
i think we are a few decades away from that type of computing power
He's right about that. Every time time I see footage of the game the IQ is different. Jokes aside I hope the game has a huge variety of animations otherwise it will start to look repetitive after a short while.
I doubt that lol but i guess nothing is impossible :]
look this is strange. In e3 2012 Watch dogs was running on a gtx 680 card and it was on the highest settings. Now it needs 780 card. Im confuzed. Read this. http://www.gamefront.com/pc...
He's kind of right. We will never see that 2012 quality Watch Dogs.
I'm calling BS on this "guarantee". It's just like when Gearbox makes claims about how many "unique" guns can be randomly generated in the Borderlands games; there's really no way to prove them wrong...but you know it's just BS hyperbole.
you use that word.. i dont think it means what you think it means
More animations is cool and everything but that's not the advancements suggested by what ubi has said and of course the presentations so far. Living breathing city is what they're allowing people to think- they're certainly not saying otherwise that's for sure. It's going to be funny watching the backlash if Fable1 is anything to go by I'm sure the game will still be decent but ubisoft plays a dangerous game, guessing I'm sure that most people forget those promises
I hope this game is more varied than Far Cry 3, although it was a good game (for the first few hours) it got very tedious and did the same thing over and over again after you get past the first island.
Crow will be eaten,,,
meh. Still not interested.
This kind of comment winds me up, you were interested enough to click and read the article
Im always up to give a game a chance which is why I clicked the article, and meh, same old same old, still not interested.
