BioWare On Mass Effect 2 Exclusivity & More

Normally, when Joystiq wants to talk to Ray Muzyka, General Manger of BioWare, they have to camp outside his palatial mansion and wait for him to get his morning paper. He's pretty spry though, so they can usually get out "When is Mass Effect 2 go--" before he slams the door in their face. But this time, EA actually asked Joystiq to pick the good doctor's brain. Here are the results.

From the Interview:

Joystiq: "Will Mass Effect 2 be an Xbox 360 exclusive again? Will they bring a PC port day and date for Mass Effect 2? Any plans for a Mac port, since EA has pledged support for that platform?"

BioWare: "We haven't announced any specific plans yet with Mass Effect 2, so other than saying that I love the Mass Effect universe, I'll have to plead the fifth on this one!"

It happens all the time in the Industry. There was an article posted a while back that Microsoft could even publish it under their label instead of EA's.

If Microsoft lets Mass Effect slip away that would be a really stupid decision IMO. It is kind of strange that they are releasing Mass Effect 1 on PC, but not PS3 also. So perhaps they already have a deal worked out...We shall see.

Yes most likely because the PS3's installbase was not worth the additional cost of developing a port for the platform. But by the time Mass Effect 2 is released, I dont see 3rd party developers like EA ignoring the installbase of the PS3 by then - it would certainly be financially rewarding. I can see Microsoft working out a 6 month exclusivity package at the most, I don't see Mass Effect 2 never making an appearance on the PS3 considering it's EA who we're talking about here, and by then they could own Take Two - so its unlikely they'd dismiss the extra cash, unless Microsoft is willing to pay more for it.

During acquisitions and divestitures contracts have to be renegotiated. When EA bought Bioware, contracts would have to of been renegotiated at that time. All contracts have terminations clauses for these types of business transactions. Depending on what was acquired, MS may not hold any legal rights to Mass Effect. This may be a simple case of timed exclusive contracts. Only the legal team of EA has the answer here...

Don't be surprised if an announcement is made at E3 about this situation.

Xbox Evolved brought this up and people slammed him for it pretty hard on N4G. But, so far it looks like they were right. Seeing as how the game was originally an exclusive it should have been an easy "yes" for them to say that the sequel would be exclusive.

The bottom line here is EA just last month released the statement that the ps3 makes more money than the 360 for their company. So Microsoft would have to make some sort of MEGA deal with EA if they want to keep Mass Effect Exclusive to their system

I think that it's a strong possibility that Mass Effect 2 could end up on the PS3. Bioshock has already been confirmed to come to the PS3, and unless Microsoft shells out the money, I wouldn't be surprised if Mass Effect 2 ended up on the PS3 because EA are all about multiplatform and MONEY$$$.

But if the PS3 does end up getting Mass Effect, it sure will be a huge blow to the 360 because both Mass Effect and Bioshock will be lost, and both of those games were big 2007 titles. But, like I've said many times, the 360 relies on 3rd party publishing too much and Bioshock coming to the PS3 is just one example of it. Microsoft will have to start paying for 3rd party exclusives sooner or later if they want to compete.

Also, maybe Microsoft could have taken that $50 million dollars that they wasted for exclusive downloadable content for GTA4 towards another game title for gods sake... maybe Microsoft could have secured Mass Effect 2 with that money or Bioshock 2.

or maybe this was only thrown out there before the game released BUT I was under the impression that BioW was gonna make your Shepard from ME1 playable/downloadable in/to the future sequels of Mass Effect. Have just mass effect 2 of the ps3 without having the first since they have said time and again that the story is carrying on from one to the next with your character carrying over along with story plot lines and all that. For the ps3 to get mass effect 2 it needs to get the first one. Who would put out games 2-3 in a trilogy without having the first on the system???????? when they have put so much talk into how they want this to be one long epic. actually they could implement a kind of "choose your past" feature at the beginning of the game (just like in ME1, when you were designing your character, except this time you would have to choose between the things that happened in the first game : save ash or the dude/kill wrex/save the coucil etc...)

would enable new user to jump in the story, and veteran could experience every aspect of the new game (as in "what would have happened if...")

also :i came up with that in 30 sec (it shows) so i figure the guys at bioware will have come up with something better should their game come to playstation.

Well baldur's gate 2 sure didnt require you to play BG1 , and yet was the second part of an epic story .

Mass effect is hardly that complicated , while with a rich setting , to prevent you from enjoying it , after some intro .

Hell it would also be easy to add on the disc a whole bunch of videos from ep 1 (they did so with xenosaga 2 in pal version , shipping a story dvd with it) or they could also do some kind of big playable flashback sequence .
Another option would be to ask , at the start of the game if you played ME 1 , and if not give you again extra scenes to fill you in .

Whatever they would choose it would be extra job , and for all we knows they just plan on releasing ME1 on ps3 before ME2 anyway .

Metal Gear Solid 4 will sell 1 million, maybe 2 million on PS3. If Konami wants to sell 3-4million, they need to release it on the 360. It's all about the money. MGS4 SHOULD be multiplat. If people think that gamers won't buy PS3's if MGS4 is multiplat, then they are smoking some good sh!t.

Lets see, a Dual Layer Dvd holds 7.5 gigs. MGS4 is 50 gigs. So 50/7.5=6.68 or in other words 7. So it would take 7 dvds to make one MGS. MS will have to manufacture 7 games for the price of one.

And YES, MGS4 could definately be ported to 360. We aren't at a stage where one game on one console can surpass the other console yet. Devs aren't that experienced with the PS3 yet. It WILL happen, but not this early in it's life.

Why attack this guy? He's only stating his opinion(which at this site means sh1t unless he's pro PS3). Blu-ray games have mostly uncompressed data to help on load times and quality. DVD9 compresses that data, so yeah, it's an inferior format. That still doesn't mean it cannot be done.

When Mass Effect was first announced as a Xbox 360 exclusive, I remember all of the excuses PS3 fans made.

Its unlikely Mass Effect 2 could go to the PS3.too much happend in ME1 to just compile a graphic novel etc. Also. .it seems like Mass Effect2 ,we would carry our character level ups from ME1. and even with EA buying out Bioware those contract aren't just put into the shredder. No one here has any idea what the contract language actually says, so spectulating where ME 2 is heading is just that, spectulation. If, that's if, MS and Bioware had a contract through ME 2 or 3, then EA has two choices. Abide by the contract or change it with MS. Changing a contract will not be a unilateral process.

As far as EA is concerned those contracts are probably in the trash after there lawyers ate them, remember MS had a publishing contract with Bioware for Mass Effect (1), EA bought it and published the PC version under there flag, that is pretty much a contract breach and sine I don't see anyone being sued looks like the contract went away or is no longer valid under the new terms of ownership by EA

remember that a contract from MS would have been to the Bioware entity ("Bioware agrees to have MS publish the game Mass effect for the Xbox 360 console" something alike) and since they are now part of EA the contract would have to be changed to EA under the Mass Effect Ip for the sequel and that seems to be a WHOLE new contract EA will probably not even consider

but just because Bioware is bought doesn't mean that a financial contract already made can be just burned. Otherwise MS owning Rare would allow them access to all their games previously published by others and we would be seeing DK racing and Goldeneye on XBLA. Contract can be redone and often are, except I can't see contract being done unilaterally only to serve EA. EA certainly has a vested interest and wants to make money. I can certainly see EA putting Mass Effect everywhere, if they think it will make the most money that way.

Fact of the matter is EA owns Bioware. EA makes significantly more money off PS3 sales than 360. By the time this game is released the PS3 user base will rival if not exceed that of the 360.

You really think it will be worth it for MS to cough up the money to keep it exclusive? MS would be better off pumping that money into a new title/dev, but I geuss they're happy w/ their measley 5 in house devs.

The only reason I could see EA not going MP w/ ME2 was if they suddenly decided they don't want to make money. Look at Bioshock, we all know that is going PS3.

Very much doubt its coming to Ps3 although it could do with a decent rpg at the moment.
Mass effect was planned a trilogy that allows characters to be loaded on to each subsequent game so only having part 2 on ps3 would kind of ruin the flow of it.
And im sure Microsoft said they were funding the development even though its with EA. Anyway up until now alot of PS3 fanboys were saying that the games rubbish so what do they care. Funny how minds change.
Either way for my money its the best RPG ever made and knocks Square's last few FF games into the last century.

Well, no doubt it will go on the PC a bit later after the 360 launch, but if they were to release it on the PS3 they would almost have to release Mass Effect 1 on the PS3 so they have an idea of what's going on, but I don't really see that happening cuz ME 1 was developed and published with MGS. I guess maybe the story of ME 2 could kind of not rely to heavily on game number 1, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

You see... the fact that Bioshock is not published by microsoft shows that there is a great posilibty that the game may be release on other platforms... Companies like Nintendo, microsoft and Sony tend to publish the games they have lots of power over... and usually the don't publish games that will endup in other platforms... So, I wouldn't dream too much over games that were published by microsoft, nintendo or Sony... They are published by them for a reason...

I don't think it's right. Mass Effect should be exclusive to Xbox 360 and PC, as well as Mass Effect 2.
Microsoft needs to do something about this, especially with Bioshock 2 (even though the first one is making it's way to the PS3)

We have Banjo Kazooie 3, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Viva Pinata 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Infinite Undiscovery, and Too Human in 2008.

We will see how these exclusives do. I'm sure they will do more then good for the Xbox 360.

...this is yet another reason why Nintendo chooses to dominate their consoles with their own games. Once you have to start dealing out cash to try and keep exclusives you are losing money. If you choose not to do it, then you lose out on just one more reason for a customer to buy your console. The more I think about it, the more I see that Nintendo's currently frustrating policies are directly correlated with times in the past where they got screwed. Be it by gamers or developers. Now their philosophy is to make Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon so big that they make bank, and let the 3rd parties who want some fight it out on their own. No accident. :(

how well did this game sell, if i recall it right it sold around 1 million to 1.5. With numbers like that would it be in microsofts best interest to pay lots of cash to keep it exclusive.
