Isn't ESO above the 200mill$ ? If so , it should rightfully be on that list

Games like ESO and WOW can't really apply since they are ever expanding based on a subscription format.
.
.
That said, this list goes to shiw large investments pay off, destiny will be the next to prove that.

Well both ESO and WoW are video games. I don't think the 60 million for WoW include its expansions but rather its final budget for the game itself.

Well the large invest paid off for majority of those games but we know happen with Too Human, Crysis 3, LA Noire.

For those who don't then let me tell you.
-Too Human wasn't profitable, its developer got into a lawsuit with Epic Games and lost.
-Crysis 3 didn't meet sales expectation.
-The studio behind LA Noire shutdown.

It did have a $200 million budget, according to most sites. We still need confirmation though.

WoW at $66m plus expansions is a STEAL!

the game has made several BILLION$

I wonder how much Call of Duty cost as that game makes a truck load of ca$h yearly.

Wow, now wonder publishers are scared to take risks.

And to people saying Tombraider definitive Edition (which I just completed and loved) is a shameless cash grab, can you blame them?

People forget just how much is on the line with these games. Studios can close and 100's of people become jobless if they dont sell. Thats real life consquences.

And this is amazing. Final Fantasy VII ($145,000,000) In 1997. Thats was last millenium !

The other incredible stat. Heavy Rain. Developing Cost ($23,200,000), Marketing Cost ($32,400,000) Nearly 50% more to market it then it cost to make it.

Thats a shame that a game needs such big advertising to be successful. Thats why the industry is such a blockbuster hit seeking medium, and why we get a new CoD ever year and everyone else trys to come up with the next big franchise to topple it. We keep buying them, theyll keep making them, and unique games like Heavy Rain are few and far between.

I don't think that taking risks needs to be super expensive though (unless you're talking about financial risks).

It's great to see that games with lower budgets can be just as innovative if not even more than high budget games.

Of course not many publishers would pay up to $200.000.000 for game unless it's pretty much a guaranteed success like GTAV but I don't think that we nessessarily need new IPs to have that budget right away.

If the first game becomes a success the sequel gets more money. That's how it has always been. Sure even a new IP needs a larger budget then 10 years ago in most cases and that's probably the reason why a lot of dev teams getting shut down after a financial flop sooner than in the past.

mochachino4074d ago

No idea why is cost so much to make Tombraider.

UltraNova4074d ago (Edited 4074d ago )

Games like this that make extensive use of Mo-Cap and blue screen with real actors and highly acclaimed writers/screen writers etc tend to have high budgets.

Yes heavy rain was cheaper but still utilized pretty much tha same things. Thats cause it was only on ps3. Tomb R was released on anything with a controller I believe, plus ported to next gen consoles right after last years release, that needs a lot of cash.
