Forget DVI, HDMI; USB Displays Coming

Waging standard wars is one of those annoying, but unavoidable flaws in today's setup of the technology industry. In a perfect world, there would only be one standard defining a technology, but the reality is that in a diverse environment as IT, there will always be different interests and there will always be customers at stake, sparking different ideas of how a certain technology should look like: Take the display segment, for example, and take a closer look at the history of interfaces will reveal a huge mess of D-SUB 15/DB-15, BNC, HDI-45, ADC, DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, DisplayPort. Has anyone ever thought about the idea of reusing another interface with a proven track record and that has been around for quite some time to connect a PC to a monitor... such as USB?

In terms of easyness (is that even a word?), USB screens might be a good idea. If everything yo have uses USB, it can't be much simpler for starters to find where to plug in what.

Ghoul4997d ago

in fact its vice versa right now its simple monitor fits in monitor port etc. but expect users to plug the mouse in the graphics card when they had usb output :P

if the quality is as good then it sounds like a good idea. plus its easyiest. is that a word?

Thanks pharmd, I knew I'd get that wrong. *is not a native english speaker*

@ Ghoul: Yeah, I know what you mean. There is a VGA port, you have a VGA cable, one side fits. Still, there are people who get that wrong. Besides, I didn't even think about using "the wrong USB". Yeah, could be quite confusing, you're right.

mmm.. now that make a lot more sense... I am tired of so many kind of wires... reminds me when each cell phone model had it's own charger.... not anymore... USB... and I am good to go... If USB can work and do what HDMI can do... forget HDMI... which brings me to the following conclusion.... nothing is future proof... tecnology can make drastic changes... if this goes through.... it would be adopted faster than HDMI simply because is cheaper not to mention that people are already familiar with it.

Not to mention wireless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or having your video MP3 player, PSP and other devices capable of being plug directly to the TV!

Sorry, USB won't replace HDMI anytime soon. Simple bandwidth rates can show you that. USB 2.0 standard has a maximum rated bandwidth of 480 Mbps, which isn't bad. Comparing it to HDMI which has a maximum rating of 10.2 Gbps, it doesn't hold up so well.
