If rumors are to be believed, Sony is mere hours away from unveiling their own virtual reality headset. In fact, some developers may have dev kits in hand. What can we expect to see?

I am so excited for tomorrow. I can't stress the importance of it being sub $300 though..

GusHasGas3686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

I'm trying to keep my expectations low.

If I don't, and there's no announcement, I'll be disappointed as hell.

If I do, and there's no announcement, I'll be fine.

If I do, and there is an announcement, it'll just make me that much more excited when it's announced.

I'm currently not doing that great of a job keeping my expectations low, though - I'm really excited. Lmao.

parentoftheyear3686d ago

Guess we will find out in just about 24 hours. If vr headset revieled tomorrow infamous friday,ps4s back in stock they going out this month HUGE. HUGE week for sony.

GrizzliS19873685d ago

why is everyone tripping about the price? the ps4 is 399 for gods sake, expect the VR to be 399 or less, most likely 299.99, even though if it was me, and i knew id be releasing it before O. Rift, id set the price at a firm 349.99. it would still sell like cakes, id add like 3-5 free demo games with the thing as well so people have something to mess around with.

Maybe even make it open source for PC gurus to create their own games. Maybe a website where newbie programmers can submit their games to sony for their approval to be downloaded on PS Store.

ABizzel13685d ago

Price: $199 - $249 for mass appeal, anything else and you've killed most of the market.

Compatibility: It could effectively run as a second screen itself, you can put on the visor, play any game, and allow someone else to watch TV as you play with your DS4 and visor only (might hurt Vita Remote play though).

PS4 + Drive Club. The delay has to be for a reason, and the small clips we've seen have show amazing improvement to graphics which increases immersion. VR increases that immersion to the next and near final level.

Release Window: GDC Announcement, E3 demonstrations, US tour, Gamescom demonstrations, EU tour, TGS demonstrations, launches late September 2014 + Japan demos in major shopping districts.

Games: Another reason for the September launch. Drive Club, Outlast patch, Daylight patch, Everyone's Gone to Rapture, The Witness, Killzone patch, inFAMOUS patch (probably just second screen viewing), MGSV Phantom Pain (Kojima will never miss an opportunity like this). Possible,

Dying Light, MLB: The Show (add PS Move support, and true baseball sim), Golf, Fight Night, Sports games, Fez, Mirror's Edge 2, anything first person.

Positional Tracking: I agree, $199 - $249 headset, $249 - $299 headset + camera. Make it happen.

Pixels: Really it depends. 720p should be enough to get away with from such a close distance, but a high quality screen needs to be used most of all for the eyes. Rechargeable battery is possible, but expect a low battery life, and headphones are possible, but probably average quality, which is fine as long as the image is good, and the price is right $199 - $249.

Comfort: Most of the weight needs to be on the sides, the front needs to be screen, and not some huge brick on your head. The problem is the screen can't be too close to your eyes or you can't see it and it'll make users sick. I think they'll be just fine though.

Honestly the other pair SOny dropped was $1000. So at $300 is gonna be a big price drop. Hopefully its affordable.

dcj05243686d ago

Not really. Sony has never released a VR headset before. You're confusing that with HMDs they've released in the past.

PoSTedUP3686d ago

yeah and they were in Sony's "overpriced" TV division as a luxury gimmick, from what i understand (always wanted one tho but too expensive and was afraid id never take them off).

i have a feeling they are going to say "$199" and then just walk off stage (when they announce the price, most likely at E3).

Alucardx033686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

dcj0524, Sony has demonstrated VR capabilities in the past. For example, when the HMZ-T3W was unveiled, Sony was using a clip-on sensor for motion detection. And earlier, they demonstrated a version of the HMZ-T line that combined augmented reality with motion tracking and a specialized room. So while they don't have a consumer product that's out-of-the-box ready for VR, we do have an idea of where they're headed.

dragongod643685d ago

I want to hear stuff like this about the VR head set:
A spare tv - Your kid can play & you can watch tv
A scare out of your mind view point
A real airplane view point
A great setup for new ways to play games
Make a glove for it & make a paint game
Make a game with 3d modaling of your room & have fun with what you can do
news up dates
wifi / 4G add-on
VR + treadmill Too many ideas
Trips
Mazes
Rollercoster
VR + PS Home 1st person view
Rent a Sony VR Robot to walk around venes
TV
Sports
EXT.

DeadIIIRed3685d ago

Sony is smart and they know the Oculus Rift will be their immediate competition. If the guys at Oculus VR are able to offer a headset at $300, Sony should be able to take advantage of their existing economies of scale to offer a higher quality headset at roughly the same or lower price point.

Even if I'm right, it'll still be a hard sale at 75% of the cost of the actual console though.

I would love if a new Hot Shots Golf for PS4 is PS VR compatible.

PoSTedUP3686d ago

gawddd... id be in heaven!!!! with the Move Controllers and everything! stop, Stop, Stop, here's a bubble for getting me really excited, but im reporting you bc it's not fairrr, y u do that to me 4? :'(

iSpeakTruth__3686d ago

Sorry it's just...I love Hot Shots too :/ lol

PoSTedUP3686d ago

i knoo. its really good on the vita, it came a long way since the ps1 but didnt lose its charm one bit.

dcj05243686d ago

Let me clear up a common misconception. Modern VR headsets based around the Oculus Rift HMD technology do not use traditional 3D as seen in TVs and movies which double renders everything. The Oculus Rift is a HD screen, wrapped slightly at an angle with 2 fishbowl-disorted eye slots. The software in question would also be warped like a fishbowl to match the eyes slots which which would make it look normal. So no double rendering or performance loss. The only thing needed a decent VR experience is 1080p and above and a STEADY frame rate above 40FPS.

Alucardx033686d ago (Edited 3686d ago )

Sorry bud, that's not accurate. Even Oculus recommends the following:

"Your code should run at a minimum of 60fps, v-synced and unbuffered. Lag and dropped frames are discomforting in VR."

Not only that, but running games at a solid 60fps (drops gives users a feeling of nausea) with v-sync and no buffer on a decent computer isn't tough, but to think that something like that could run on a Vita is not realistic.

Plus, 1080p is widely considered the bare minimum for resolution. And you seem to be forgetting that the lenses magnify the screen, which means the perceived resolution is much lower than what's stated. When you combine that with the proximity of the screen, you get the screen door effect very quickly. If you've used an Oculus, it's pretty clear that a huge bump in resolution is necessary to make VR truly compelling.

Not only that, but you're thinking of one very specific implementation of VR. Some competing technologies use dual screens, so to assume that Sony will take the same route as Oculus isn't correct. They could very possibly go in another direction.

You can read up on VR best practices here:

gamerz3685d ago

The Oculus Rift renders two pictures side-by-side on one screen to simulate 3D.

Alucardx033685d ago (Edited 3685d ago )

Yep. Two pictures side by side. It's probably the best way to do VR from everything I've read, but there are a few other competing technologies out there.

Hroach6163686d ago

Some people mountain climb. Others work on cars. My hobby is gaming. I pick up consoles on day 1(have both new systems n not ashamed of day 1 purchase). Please let this be true and all we hope for. I will buy this day 1 in a second. No hesitation. It's what I've dreamt of for gaming since I was little.
Come on SONY LETS DO THIS!!!!

s1lentone3686d ago

Hope it's priced around $250. My wallet can't handle all this. Lol.

Is Driver (PS1) Still Worth Playing in 2024?

"Driver was a technical achievement for PS1, a pioneer in cinematic gaming, and an often brutal challenge - TechStomper asks if its brand of 70s car chase antics still holds up."

PrimeVinister6d ago

The driving holds up, most of everything else does not.

PrimeVinister6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

@Shane Kim

Well, I mean the driving physics hold up. The draw distance, police AI, visuals in general etc do not

Cacabunga5d ago

One of my all time favorites on PS1. I spent a summer vacation playing this was so good

isarai6d ago

Sadly youd be hard pressed to find any driving game with better physics these days. But the draw distance really kills it for me

PrimeVinister6d ago

The physics hold up ridiculously well. And the draw distance is a real hurdle at first.

__y2jb6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Nonsense. The physics in any modern game or any 360 game is light years beyond Driver.

Dandizzle6d ago

This game is hard, you will fail and quit

PrimeVinister6d ago

But you will get there eventually... maybe

jznrpg6d ago

Stop with is it worth it articles. If you want to play a game play the damn game!

anast5d ago

I loved this game awhile back.

Barlos5d ago

Yeah but is it worth reading pointless articles?

__y2jb6d ago

It wasn’t worth playing in the 90’s.

Espangerish6d ago

My thoughts exactly. I bought it at release for full price and got frustrated and bored with it very quickly.

Terry_B8d ago

Well..you can play it completely offline at least ^^

PrimeVinister8d ago

Something we really miss, just turning on the console and having the game start without signing into stuff

Terry_B8d ago

Fully agreed. That and Splitscreen Modes for Racing games.

PrimeVinister8d ago

@Terry_B I miss having people to splitscreen with, but I can't blame anyone for that :-(

Cacabunga8d ago

Not too late.. we can still change that.

PrimeVinister8d ago

@Cacabunga I will let you in, see ya soon compadre :-P

MrBaskerville7d ago

@Terry_B
GT7 actually has 4 player splitscreen. Which is wild in this day and age.

TiredGamer7d ago

Good news is that Sony released a final update to Gran Turismo Sport to allow it to function offline. Expecting the same for GT7 at some point in the future.

PrimeVinister7d ago

That is great news, I really liked Sport even if many others did not :-/

Chocoburger8d ago

I'm not big into sim racing, but I got sucked into the hype for this one from magazines back then. I just played arcade mode and that was enough for me to feel like I got my money's worth.

Yeah, it's definitely worth playing today. GT 2 has a few interesting fan made graphical mods when played on an emulator as well.

PrimeVinister8d ago

The arcade mode is underrated, it's a great alternative mode and you can even unlock GT HiFi with it.

Fonsecap8d ago

Cars back then had much more personality then those we see today. Modern cars all about the led lights and the tablet size screens and they all seem alike, back then they could be simpler in design but had tons more personality.

PrimeVinister8d ago

That is something a few people have pointed out - that cars all look the same now. I have to agree that a lot of new vehicles lack personality.

fsfsxii8d ago

You guys are so anti-fun its depressing, like who tf cares about personality of objects like wtf? Just learn to enjoy stuff as is.

PrimeVinister8d ago

It's hardly anti-fun to remark that some objects look nicer than others.

And everyone has their favourite era of cars, I sincerely doubt many will pick the 2020s a few decades from now.

Fonsecap7d ago

Dude, like wft cares about personality of objects? What about art? Paintings are objects and they're considered good or bad if they show or lack personality so I ask, wtf are you talking about? Cars are also considered pieces of art, vintage cars, classic cars, classic bikes and so on. Artists are appreciated by the objects they craft, blacksmiths, painters, engineers, designers, so wtf cares about personality of objects indeed... ( Sorry for my English, it's not my native language)

MrBaskerville7d ago

Talking about cars is fun if you are a car enthusiast. Just saying.

ApocalypseShadow8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

That Corvette Stingray to this day is one of the most ferocious whips ever driven. Overpowered against other cars yes. But to drive it and be that close to losing control, but being in command around those curves, just can't be duplicated.

HiFi mode is also something I miss. There should be a mode in today's GT where it's Mano o Mano and the detail and resolution jump full throttle. In today's games, Max Ray Tracing and lighting and textures to make it look even more real..

PrimeVinister8d ago

A modern HiFi mode would be really cool! It would be really interesting to see how real they could go by stripping it all way back.

And Stingray is a solid choice 👌

TiredGamer7d ago

HiFi mode in GT1 was only a stripped down 60 fps mode for one track. Should have been called "Performance Mode" or "High Frame Rate" mode.

PrimeVinister7d ago

@TiredGamer it was only three tracks, but it was still cool

Petebloodyonion8d ago

Not according to Former Playstation president Jim Ryan for he told Time that he doesn't see why anyone would play old games given the advancements in fidelity achieved today.

https://time.com/4804768/pl...

PrimeVinister8d ago

I don't agree with him, but he had a few good points.

PlayStation 1 Classics Forgotten for One Reason or Another

Disruptor PS1, a pre Goldeneye console FPS from 1996 (with Command and Conquer type FMV cutscenes) and the first game by a pre Spyro Insomniac Studios directed by Mark Cerny. A good game for its time, and pre Bioshock use of telekinesis type powers. A game sadly almost completely lost to time

PrimeVinister12d ago

I have never even heard of it, so that must be a deep cut. Sounds really interesting and I might dig it out :-)

PrimeVinister12d ago

@Cacabunga A classic, no doubt. But, fondly remembered by many.

Cacabunga12d ago

First one was so good but second one on another level!!!
Still hoping to see a next gen version..

PrimeVinister12d ago

@Cacabunga Yeah, I preferred II for the real-timier combat. I would love to see both remade or remastered.

on_line_forever11d ago

We need to bring back the golden era of ps1 & ps2 .
We need to see quality games developed with alot of passion to make gamers satisfied .
We need to benefit from new AI technology to bring something new to games something like " nemesis systems " that used in shadow of morder and upgrade it to next level

PrimeVinister11d ago

The economics of games has changed a lot since the PS1 and PS2. As much as I would love a return to those days, it's not not at all likely.
