Are the Xbox 360's graphics better than the PS3?

The Xbox 360 has been out for a year already, with developers having had plenty of time to get used to programming for it. Now the PS3 launches, with most developers only having PS3 dev-kits to create games with. While the PS3's graphics will improve in future games, there's one game out there that definitely looks better on Xbox 360. Is this bad news for Sony?

I would like to add..in this article there is a comparison of First Gen x360 title Ridge Racer 6 and First Gen ps3 title Ridge Racer 7. In the months leading to launch just like devs had little time with PS3 kits...Devs had little time with X360 kits last year. So this comparison is pretty fair. But just like all side-by-side comparisons you will have people with different opinions. In this article it says X360's RR6 is better looking then RR7 on PS3. But again...this is one opinion. Its safe to say that most of us that read the news on this site are actually gamers. While our individual maturity levels vary...we are all gamers. Sure fanboys will take this topic and run with it proclaiming victory or staunchly defending their console of choice. Alot of the videos floating around the net with side-by-side comparisons often make the claim that it is unfair to compare games being released on ps3 and x360 because x360 is in it's "second generations of games" while all ps3 games are first generation. I submitted this article because it is a comparison of 2 first generation games...by the same developer. meaning we'd get a more accurate look at how the 2 consoles compare with one another. At the end of the day it is still the games available on the console that will make it "better" than its competitor in the eyes of the consumer. Last gen I had all three consoles and I plan to own all 3 next-gen consoles eventually. There are (or will be) games on each console that I want to play. I am a gamer...not a fanboy. Gamers are fans of good games...more than they are of consoles.

I don't have time and dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on games for three consoles a month so i picked the console/company i trusted and better suited me needs when it comes to function, service and type of games. I guess gaming/internet terms dont mean much in real life.

if circumstances dictate that you can only have one game console, and you choose according to who you believe is the best then thats completely understandable. but what separates someone like that from a fanboy is that a fanboy will wholeheartedly align him/herself with one company, and completely SLAM what he/she assume to be the competition with one-sided, uneducated logic.

I base my opinions on lots of reading and when somebodies twisting the truth i cant help but comment on it. I think that's a little more valid vs wishful thinking and turning a blind eye to the facts. So if some one has a prefference they should not comment?, do you read what these Sony fans say? one cant help getting the facts out.

THE 360 IS MORE POWERFUL AND IT IS VERY EVIDENT EVEN THIS EARLY ON. Call of Duty 3 for xbox 360 at 60fps vs. call of duty 3 for ps3 at 30fps. Xbox 360 has a way higher framerate in Tony Hawks Pro Skater 8 as well. The proof is in the pudding.

-OS takes 22%+ of the CPU power.
-Development for the new hardware is required to relearn development and development tools.
-Blu-Ray reads in volume and the rom in the PS3 drive reads slower then the 360's rom.

If MS would stir up more hype with ads and start boasting it's media and games MS would win this generation with out a doubt, but they always had a kind of underground word of mouth style maybe they get it from their lack of competition with their cash cow software branch which makes them a tad arrogant in a marketing sense. Microsoft has the most advertisement of all of the consoles. It is an unfair statement because they have been out for much longer, but their battle isn't getting the word out there anymore. Microsoft now has to keep people interested in their product or raise interest in it.

You are blind my friend, PS3 games look like PS2 games with less jaggies plus it simply cant produce true to life graphics and very detailed worlds it probly wont do as much multi tasking-multi purpose cumputing either and not as good AI. But it will have large worlds and actions on a limited scale doing somethings a little more realalisticlly and have hours of CGI story cut-scenes.

My take is really who gives a damn! How many of you own RR6? How many of you same people will be buying PS3 and RR7?

The same people on this site who do nothing but bash one console over the other have NO INTENT of buying the console they critize!

My huge question of the day is why do we have countless articles of GOW and other 360 games but the reviews from IGN about RFOM can't get onto the site! Its pitiful and I'm so excited that the 17th is almost here so I can spend less time on this site, which is going nowhere but downhill!

Especially since Ridge Racer 7's gameplay footage looked a lot better than RR6's. 1080p at 60FPS vs. 720p at 30FPS? That's a hell of a difference. (I think it was 30. If I'm wrong, tell me.)

Comparing PS3's launch titles to the 360 launch titles, PS3 obviously has an edge. Considering that devs already had an extra year of development time on the 360, the fact that PS3 launch titles are holding their own, and in many cases exceeding what the competition is putting out, is pretty incredible. Screenshots don't show too much of a difference at this point since both consoles rely on similar shader tech; the difference is more apparent when seeing these games in motion. I showed my friends the gameplay footage of F1 Championship and the two most common statements were "Where's the gameplay?" and "Goddamn."

It wasn't just the graphics that impressed them. It was number of intelligent AI-controlled racers and physics during the crashes that made the footage much more believable. What's going to really separate the two consoles is the calculations that go on behind the scenes, and not necessarily the polygons that show up in stillshots.

Top is the 360 version with AA and HDR, the bottom pic is the ps3 version without HDR, because it can't do AA and HDR at the same time. Also note in RR6 the #'s are blue like the top pic, RR7 for the PS3 doesn't have that.

On the 360 pic the water looks more realistic and even has a boat in it, whereas the water in the PS3 version looks like crap. Look towards the middle of each pic by the grassy curve, look at the 360 version first because if you don't you will not see any water just a dark spot.

...from the links Deceased posted the only difference pro 360 is the water, but it looks way too fake, like ther would be no watter. Knowing that 360 fanboys always like to lie and twist the facts(Cell downgrade, Toy Story statement just to name a few) I wouldn't wonder if this comparison is fake. Yeah, your so right, who wants better graphics when they play a game, "JUST WATER", damn, I hate when idiots post stupid crap that's obviously not true, but go ahead whatever little boy. Alway's blind to the truth, sony's great right? The cell is all about gaming right? The RSX isn't underpowered right? 256 = 256 un-unified and not freely accesable is great right? Choppy, bottlenecking graphics and gameplay is the way to go, right? And, there's so much more "bad" things to mention but your all blind to it. A wannabe computer systen who places gaming second to the other crap that the slow as* Blu Ray drive supposed to do, right? It's infact a horrid designed system for gaming, fine for a PC, Horrid for gaming. The proof is in the pudding. MGS4, bottlenecked and chopped like crazy when demo'd, and that's 2 years in tp development time. Killzone, that's a joke for ps3. R-FOM, a mediocre game for multiplayer, a huge 40 person mistake with choppy gameplay, a decent singleplayer game only.

So, As I hate to continue to say it, but the ps3 has already lost the next gen.wars, regardless of sales totals, it's the inferior game machine in every way, "LIVE" especially.

ps3 used a good CPU and probably a decent graphics pkg.,but it's all underpowered they way it's been alocated to deliver gaming. It's not a true 512 megs, it's not a true equal to the Xbox 360. The machine's not 1 yr. behind the Xbox 360, except in release date, the systems were being designed from almost the same time frame, same hours put into them. The games like Gears of War and Resistance have had equal time to make, the results as you'll see when you get your lil wannabe so called ps3 in probably june of next year will be as everybody is saying, not up to the bar set by the Xbox 360. Besides, as stated also, MGS4 will probably become an Xbox 360 exclusive, know why?? B/C ps3 can't handle it, w/o it being down graded, dummied down to handle w/o all that bottlenecking and freezing up.

that's what i said in the other post.put both games in their highest settings and run them side by side and then ask which is better.screen shots tell you nothing because it is not moving.put rr7 on an 1080p tv and run it,then put rr6 on a tv and i think it is at 720p,then you would know.but who cares.some of you don't even have rr6 or will be getting rr7.so why do some of you even post?i plan on getting rr7,and i played the previous ones.i still got and love rr type4.if you don't like arcade racing or drifting or ps3,don't even post.

I'm total 360 fanatic but even I have to addmit that saying the 360s graphics are better than the PS3s is just stupid- Of course the PS3 is going to be better- Lanch titles are never a great graphical success (just compare Halo to Halo2- completetly different). Admittedly the graphics may not be 'as good' as prevously indicated but to say they are worse than a cheaper console is insane. Its kind of like saying that a Jaguar isn't as fast as a Clio because it doesn't reach 0 to 60 in 5 seconds
