Sony actually care about our consumers and while the console is a little bit more expensive than competors consoles, it really is a high end multimedia device and can be used without propritary hardware, as our competitors force consumers to do. The Sony PlayStation 3 is the gamer's choice.
to use standard 2.5 sata harddrives, only down the road people will realise how ingenius it was when playtv is released. i gota 60g and its nearly full already. how people live with 20 or even 40g ill never know but its a problem easily sorted
Just make sure its 2.5" hard drive. That would be a notebook hard drive. 3.5 doesn't fit in the PS3 I don't think. Though I guess if you use a cable it may plug in, but your hard drive would stick out.
It does not take that much money to upgrade to a "massive" drive.... unlike xbox's proprietory drive (xbox frame covering a normal laptop HD) IT is much cheaper .
It is in the manual. There are dozens of vids on YouTube about it. Almost every site already posted a tutorial. It was posted here, several times. I know, slow news days suck, nothing new going on and stuff, but please, replacing a PS3s HDD is not like building a house. No need to re-post it every four weeks.
What are you talking about? "Mindless Sony Protection Group"?
This is simply a set of instructions on how to change a PS3 HDD. Yes, it's pointless since it's in the manual, and you can find dozens of articles and Youtube videos on the subject, but that's all there is to it. Nothing to do with this "Mindless Sony Protection Group" you speak of.
You openly dislike Sony and most of their products, yet you go to the trouble of clicking on a PS3 related story, read it and then b!tch about it.
If you truely don't like the PS3 as you've stated on numerous occasions, just stay away from this section. It would mean a lot to us.
I don't get it... its in the original Sony PS3 user manual. There have been multiple text/video/picture HowTo's since the PS3 came out, and ive even seen a couple of them here on N4G.. Who TF approved this?

Send them a nice PM for being nice enough to remember us what we knew since the launch in '06.
Just thought about swapping out my old 20 gig for my crappy laptop's 120 gig, my question is-- when the PS3 formats the new (used) drive, will it matter (at all) that it has been used in my laptop? I realize that with formatting it shouldn't, but I just don't want to end up screwing myself. Most tutorials just show using new drives so I wanted to ask.
It doesn't matter if it is old because of the format. I've got my 250gb drive waiting to go into my PS3, just waiting for a replacement caddy to arrive from sony as i messed up the screws in my old one :(
I bought a 250 gb drive and put it in my laptop. I then took the 120gb drive out of my laptop and put it in my PS3.
@Hella Whip I know what you mean. What does Sony make those screws out of? They strip so easy... I stripped 3 out of the 4 while being extremely careful. For anyone that attempts to do this be sure you have some need nose pliers handy to remove those stripped screws.
I stripped 2 of them trying to unscrew the damn things, and had to use pliers to twist the outside to remove one of them. I don't see how a machine can get them so tight that the same force needed to remove them runs the risk of fvcking them up. I retightened them only enough so minimal effort is needed to get them back out.
I just bought a 320 gig WD Scorpio today. Have yet to install it. Sony was right on the ball with this one. Going with a standard HD format is genius. On a side note, there are some HD's that have an RPM of 7200. I read on many sites to try and avoid these ones because the current HD's that come in the PS3 run at 5400 rpm. Going any faster might cause undesired effects like over heating. Just an FYI for people looking to upgrade.

i wish Sony market their upgradeable hard drive on ps3 more to the consumers.
No offense but im pretty sure youtube has alot of vids on how to change your HDD.
Hi-dilly-ho-dilly neighboureenos!
