Killzone Shadow Fall Resolution – Temporal Reprojection & Shadow Fall 1080P

Killzone Shadow Fall in single player runs at a native resolution of 1080P, 30FPS. It is important to remember that based on the documentation Guerrilla games released that their MRT (Multi Render Target) was around 800MB. For the sake of online, the team decided to do something a little different and instead tried out a new technology known as Temporal Reprojection.

excellent article but this is very taxing on the hardware
the output is a native 1080p with a hash algorithm like this :

output(1080P)
{
frame1 = frame (n-1)/2 + frame(n+1)
return frame1;
}

KZSF mp outputs full 1080p native image

KingKionic 3702d ago

Guerrila says the game isn't native 1080p

http://killzone.com/en_GB/b...

"In multiplayer mode, however, we use a technique called 'temporal reprojection', which combines pixels and motion vectors from multiple lower-resolution frames to reconstruct a full 1080p image. If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native."
"

Reconstructing sounds like guerrilla games was stitching together the resolution like frankestiens master lol

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

scott1823702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

It's not native, but it is taxing on the hardware to use the technique. It improves controller feedback and makes the multiplayer experience better, that's why it was done.

SardoNumspa3702d ago

A full 1080p frame - end of story. 1080p native Time to move on. When something like this backfires so badly it is time to throw in the towel and move on to the next article that attempts to trash the PS4. Right now any further talk is just reinforcing that Killzone MP is native 1080p, GG is an amazing developer, and the PS4 hardware really is as powerful as people hope(and fear) it is.

Sammy7773702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

@Warlord
The image output on screen has the same amount of pixels as a native 1080p image. You have no idea about how that algorithm works. It is 100% native 1080p image but achieved by superimposing a horizontal 960 frame against a 960*1080 image . This is NOT UPSCALING or 1080i..1080i image has no superimposition :)

Secondly , Xbox One has 7 games which are 720p/ish right now

Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct , Cod, Battlefield , MGS , Witcher 3, Titanfall and the next Gears probably won't be 1080p on Xbox One as well. 900p Xbox one game includes AC4, Thief, Ryse , Watchdogs , PVZ and so on as opposed to just 1 900p game on PS4

oh sorry the next DQ and FF are also 720p on Xbx One as per CH4 forums and 1080p on PS4

I expect brother that this gen will be painful for you cuz negative res talk hurts xbox one and the corresponding multiplat game sale,see Titanfall preorders. PS4 will perhaps get 1/2 900p games down the line as games become more demanding over time, but for Xbox One bro it will be a bloodbath. Again, MS remaining in the war will be good for SONY but that is unlikely to happen

@warlord

bro you are not a kid and Eurogamer's anti SONY agenda won't work cuz there are many techies across n4g and neogaf who understand a thing or 2 about tech , so those negative publicity or declaring Thief which runs at higher rez and frames on ps4 as loser will only do that media outlet disservice

@nolimit

It is fully 1920*1080 = 960*1080p+960 superimposed on the image . Like i said, fully NATIVE 1080p. same resolution as 1920*1080 image

Muerte24943702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

(1920)= X value= vertical lines running horizontally on the "X"axis. This determines the images aspect ration

(1080)= Y value= horizontal lines running vertically on the "Y" axis. This determines the images resolution.

Aspect ratio/resolution = image quality

"Q: Is KILLZONE SHADOW FALL running 1080p, or something else?
A:KILLZONE SHADOW FALL’s single and multiplayer modes both run at 1080p."
http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

each frame contains 1080 horizontal lines running vertically on the "Y" axis. Everyone else has provided numbers, graphs, and statements from the developers themselves. I'll take the word of the people actually making the game over an internet troll everyday. You're just mad because Xbox One is actually having problems with the "Y" value aka the part of the equations that determines the resolution (900p/769p/720p). Stop trying to lump Sony in with Microsoft. This is the same thing that happened with the who ANTI used games/DRM policy MS tried to force on everyone. People just assumed Sony was going to follow their lead. By people I mean Xbox fans

Like he said more studios are going to start using this. Congratulations Xbox fanboys, Guerrilla just made it to where you can also get 1080p using ESRAM there you go. You're Welcome.

BitbyDeath3702d ago

Did you not see the first two Q&A's?

'In both SP and MP, KILLZONE SHADOW FALL outputs a full, unscaled 1080p image at up to 60 FPS. Native is often used to indicate images that are not scaled; it is native by that definition.'

It is native 1080p according to GG.

scott1823702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

@Sammy777
I just don't understand how it works. But it sounds like the image comes in at 1080P, and is a taxing way to do it so other things like controller feedback improve.

I will leave this to the tech savvy people, it hurts my head.

KingKionic 3702d ago

Run run run as fast as you can you cant catch me im the 1080p man!

No_Limit3702d ago

In another word, it is still 960x1080. I just love the new excuse now from supporters by saying "but it is very taxing on the hardware". LOL

Pandamobile3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Long story short: Guerilla was having difficulty getting KZ:SF to run at native 1080p60 in multiplayer.

Their solution:

Render the current frame at 960x1080, and use information from two previous frames to fill in the gaps in the image. The reconstructed image that is outputted to your TV is technically 1080p, but the multiplayer portion of the game doesn't actually render at 1080p.

Those who still don't understand, feel free to ask me about it and I can try to break it down further.

Sy_Wolf3702d ago

Frankenstine was the scientist, not the monster.

SardoNumspa3702d ago

"Those who still don't understand, feel free to ask me about it and I can try to break it down further."

LOL!!!!

Nothing but respect to Guerrilla Games. Making fools out of PC and Xbox fans for two straight generations.

Maybe the Titanfall devs will learn how to do MP properly from Guerrilla Games and try to get something better than their unstable framerate at 792p.

CryofSilence3702d ago

I read the Q&A, and it clarified this whole issue for me. It's a very interesting technique and potentially greatly improves AA and performance. For the less tech savvy or those who don't understand, all you need to understand is that it is a 1080p image output. However, due to imperfections in their pixel prediction technology, there will occasionally be a slight image degradation where the combined images don't match up entirely (which is remedied by parenting the glitched pixel to nearby ones). For the most part, it runs at full 1080p and is indistinguishable from traditional techniques.

badz1493702d ago

@No_limit

"In another word, it is still 960x1080."

it's true that there's no limit on your ignorance!

did you even read the tweet from GG themselves and watched this video? it basically says, "the MP is native 1080p" BUT only half of the 1920 vertical lines are rendered in real time while the other half are predicted renders based on past frames and then superimposed on the real time renders. so, the output is indeed NATIVE 1920X1080 and there is no upscaling involved if that is what you're trying to imply!

of course if they can render all 1920X1080 pixels at the same time, that would be best but they acknowledged the hardware limitation and used a "trick" to make the game still full HD while doing 60fps too. unlike CoD Ghost, KZSF is very demanding graphically thus maintaining true 1920X1080 would be hard if they want to achieve 60fps and that's why the SP is not 60fps but it's indeed true 1920X1080 unlike the MP.

in the end of the day, it's still 1920X1080 achieved using a trick and those saying that they are lying, guess what? GG didn't lie afterall!

Bigpappy3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Wow. How about them just saying the game is not native 1080p instead of explaining how they added fillers and patches.

It is up scaling while using fillers, NOT NATIVE.

It hard to just say we mislead customer or we lied.

No_Limit3702d ago

@badz149 ,

"of course if they can render all 1920X1080 pixels at the same time, that would be best but they acknowledged the hardware limitation and used a "trick" to make the game still full HD while doing 60fps too"

The game does not run on 60fps, it avg. about 50fps which was already tested by DigitalFoundry.
DF: "Here Guerrilla Games has opted for a 960x1080 framebuffer, in pursuit of a 60fps refresh. Across a range of clips, we see the game handing in a 50fps average on multiplayer. It makes a palpable difference, but it's probably not the sort of boost you might expect from halving fill-rate"
http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

and you just contradicting yourself:
"the output is indeed NATIVE 1920X1080 and there is no upscaling involved if that is what you're trying to imply!"

and then follow by: "KZSF is very demanding graphically thus maintaining true 1920X1080 would be hard if they want to achieve 60fps and that's why the SP is not 60fps but it's indeed true 1920X1080 UNLIKE THE MP."

So which one is it? Please make up your mind. like Bigpapy already stated "It is up scaling while using fillers, NOT NATIVE."

NATIVE is true 1080p which the MP of KZ is definitely not. Guerrilla games already confirmed it is not.

"If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native, "theproducer of KZ:SS, Poria Torkan said."
http://www.gamespot.com/art...
So the real answer is that MP is NOT 1080p as in progressive. We were lied to by Sony when they clearly states that the MP and SP were both true 1080p. No amount of tricks and patches is going to change that fact.

The spin and damage control is strong still. LOL

imt5583702d ago

Still is better than upscaled 720p or 900p, If Xbone struggle to achieve 1080p/30fps, this is great solution.

So, temporal 1080p>>>>900p>& gt;>>>720p

Volkama3702d ago

Is it better than upscaled 720p though?

I'm not trolling, I'm genuinely curious! I've seen enough people complain that multiplayer looks blurry, I'd like some of them to set their PS4 to output at 720p (so the TV can handle the upscale) and give an honest opinion on whether it looks better or worse.

I used to set my XBox One to output at 720p for Battlefield or Dead Rising. Not because I love 720p, it just gave a much nicer image before they fixed the scaler.

reed_richard3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

The biggest problem is that the people who are saying that Killzone Sf mp is not in 1080p don't know what 1080p is. 1080p is the amount of pixels displayed on the screen at any one time. That means that 1080p is 2,000,000 pixels. What you are confused by this upscale resolution is blow-up Or stretching of a smaller pictures To a large image. KillzoneSf doesn't Upscale it takes pieces From older frames or pictures and drawers new pictures or frames in 1080p to speed up the process. This is not new but is faster than drawing a new frame every time . This is great for console better than upscaled resolution it cuts down on processing new frame and speeds up frame-rates.

starchild3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Nope, it reduces the rendering load. Why else do you think Guerrilla did it?

The fact that they have to use an interpolation algorithm to "predict" what the missing pixels should be says everything that needs to be said.

AGaryColemanClone3702d ago

Wow, that Eurogamer FUD has really backfired.

Killzone MP 1080p confirmed. The PS4 is a beast.

thorstein3702d ago

They really tried hard on that article, didn't they? I read that and was like what? And it was quoting an earlier article about it as if they had "discovered" this shocking news. But in reality, they just didn't understand what they were reading.

3702d ago Replies(3)
Volkama3702d ago

Don't be stupid. GG confirmed that what Eurogamer said was 100% accurate. How is that FUD?

The final image is 1080p, but the final image of every single Xbox One game is 1080p too. Because of upscaling.

It might help if you stop thinking of upscaling as "stretching pixels" or using "basic interpolation". TVs these days have dual or quad core processors that run extensive, complex algorithms to calculate what pixels to render based on previous frames, edges/lines/colours/focal points and far more within the picture. Sony's own TVs reference a large database of images rendered at different resolutions to determine the best upscale for a given frame.

GG are calculating pixels software side, but that doesn't mean it's anything better than upscaling. Crytek use software upscaling in Ryse, that produces a 1080p image without the console's upscaler touching it as well. And Ryse isn't native 1080p either.

Maybe GG's method gives a better end result than the PS4 scaling chip, or maybe they're wasting CPU resource. We wont know for sure without side by side comparisons.

reed_richard3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

Please stop this is not upscaled. Upscale is stretching or blowing up a smaller image. What GG is reusing old frame to cut down on the time it takes to draw new ones. Just like in cartoon they reuse the background to save on time and money. This is not upscaled

GTgamer3702d ago

Its a spin by who? They explained what they did just becuz you don't understand it's a spin :/.

badz1493702d ago

yeah, seriously, what spin? they revealed the trick they used to achieved 1080p and that's spinning? it's not a spin as the output is indeed native 1920X1080p WITHOUT upscalling. they just do it differently to compensate the hardware limitation.

aquamala3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

nothing changed. only half the screen is rendered, the other half are "predicted" based on what's in the previous frames. don't need to do tricks like this if they can just do native 1080p

Sammy7773702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

ofcourse it is 1080p native...same amount of pixels as a native 1920*1080 image

960*1080p superimposed on another 960* image . See my hash algorithm above

The image has the same amount of pixels as native 1080p game

@below
COD xbox one runs at 1280*720...the output on screen is same too . KZSF's output image is 1920*1080= 100% native 1080p image

There is no half rendered or anything

The rendering algorithm is 1/2 +1/2 ..see above done CONCURRENTLY

aquamala3702d ago (Edited 3702d ago )

"same amount of pixels as native 1080p game"

yes, except only half of it is actually rendered, so no, not like a native 1080p game

No_Limit3702d ago

Sammy, how can you keep going on in every KZ articles and spreading these false information that KZ is true 1080p when in fact it is not.

"same amount of pixels as a native 1920*1080 image 960*1080p superimposed on another 960* image"

LOL, your made up algebra makes no freaking sense. What the heck is "superimposed on another 960* image"?

The end result is they weren't able to keep the MP at 1080p and 60fps and have to made sacrifice to make it run as clost to 60fps as possible(can't even do that as it is avg. only around 50fps) even with this new interlacing technique of 960x1080 buffer in on every other horizontal column to fill in the gap.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer161d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138161d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga161d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

Notellin160d ago (Edited 160d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem161d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos161d ago (Edited 161d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor160d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies160d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim160d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese160d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto160d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic161d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld161d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie161d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77161d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231160d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein161d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

In August, online servers for several PlayStation games will shut down, leaving their multiplayer functions unplayable.

purple101642d ago

whrere on earth is the next killzone, im soooOOO thirsty for some proper weighted, (but still fast when running/sprinting) fps gamplay, it felt sooso so good on ps3, with that, lets be honest, very small, quite uncomfortable sixaxis dualshock controller, that was just too small for western sized hands, ok for japanese kids i suppose was the point>??

now with PS5 controller, it would be totally masterfull.

ClayRules2012642d ago

I hear you. I want some NEW Killzone, especially on PS5, with the PS5 DualSense controller with that ever so impressive DualSense of an experience Haptic feedback!

Knowing how far Guerrilla has come since Horizon: Zero Dawn, Killzone can only benefit greatly from their ever growing talent!!

Bobertt641d ago

I think Sony has given up on their exclusive shooters. They haven't released a remaster for the Resistance series or a new SOCOM game either. I don't think Guerilla is in a rush to make Killzone since they have Horizon now too :(.

642d ago
Outside_ofthe_Box642d ago

All I want is for them to build Killzone 2 with multiplayer included from the ground up, keep the gameplay the same, and I'll be happy.

GG with KZ3 and Shafowfall haven't been able to match KZ2 so I don't really have faith in another sequel.

Unfortunate that KZ2 came out during COD era where every game that didn't pay like Modern Warfare was deemed garbage. KZ2's multiplayer is definitely an all time great.

Michiel1989642d ago

since when was kz2 deemed garbage?

MizHDTV642d ago

Right on dude
KZ2 was just a special game to me

sinspirit642d ago

I'd love KZ2 multiplayer again. I also think they could easily incorporate a mode to compete with Battlefield style game modes

Seraphim642d ago

KZ2 was one of maybe a handful of games I actually put time into online. What a blast!! And the campaign was excellent as well. I certainly miss that dark world. Still ashamed I never buttoned up that Platinum.

Storm23642d ago

A remake of Killzone 2 with the same grittiness and feel on PS5 would be f*cking incredible. The SP and MP were just perfect. I played the sh*t out of that game. Would happily pay a lot of money for that.

DarXyde642d ago

Honestly, I don't like FPS games. They're not for me, but I do agree that there was something about KZ2 multiplayer that even someone like me enjoyed.

Sony really needs to get better about tearing down servers. I don't like that they shut them down.

shadowT642d ago

agree, KZ2 was a masterpiece

Muigi641d ago

KZ3 multiplayer was better imo.

Outside_ofthe_Box641d ago (Edited 641d ago )

@Michiel1989
"since when was kz2 deemed garbage?"

As with anything, things don't get the appreciation it deserves until way after it's release.

KZ2 got a lot of flak for it's weighty controls that many mistook for input lag. People didn't like that it wasn't a twitch shooter like CoD. You also had people saying things like "it feels like you're controlling a midget", "enemies take too long to die" (you can't pray and spray in kz2. You have to shoot in bursts for your shots to be more accurate), people complained about the sniping, etc.

This led to a lot of changes in KZ3 that turned the vets off like reducing the amount of variables for bullet damage, getting rid of spawn grenades, etc.

BISHOP-BRASIL641d ago

@DarXyde

I don't think there's much Sony or any other company in that position can do much different about it... Keeping servers running simply cost money, these gomes don't generate none anymore, so eventually they need to pull the plug.

Astrokis641d ago

KZ2 was definitely better then KZ3, but the third one still had strong suits. It’s been many years but I remember something about Shadow Fall being made by a team at GG that did NOT do KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer which is why it felt different. I remember when I found that out it made a lot of sense about Shadow Falls multiplayer feeling so off.

Horizon zero dawn sold more copies than all of the killzone franchise combined including spin offs on handheld. I guess that's the reason why won't see killzone from guerilla soon. There is at least one more mainline horizon coming out and their second team is working on horizon VR I believe. So it's gonna be a while unless another studio takes over.

Profchaos642d ago

I've been playing a lot of Killzone 2 on rpcs3 with a duelsense combined with the ability to remap controls to a modern standard and bump the game to 60fps it shows that we really need a remaster to probably the best killzone game to date although shadowfall technically beats it in the graphics department art style was so different that they are incomparable

MizHDTV642d ago

I’d be happy with a release of KZ2

Killzone went to the same place as Socom and Mag, more money in 25 hour single player games with no servers to maintain. Socom was literally the reason I bought a PS2, Resistance FOM the reason I bought a PS3, all gone now.

Killzone has never been weighted correctly, the jumping never worked.

A new properly-weighted shooter in the Killzone series would be great. More like Killzone 1 and 2 than SF.

I think the issue comes from the fact that the Helghast side is sympathetic while looking like Nazi stormtroopers. The Trump age has led artists to avoid this look entirely.

I feel something may be announced soon

The sixaxis felt fine in my hands since they're small, but the ps5 really made me feel the difference. So ergonomic.

Killzone 2 was/is so good and it still looks good today. The multiplayer was fun as well. If they make a new Killzone I hope it is the style of Killzone 2.

I wish Sony didn’t abandon Resistance and Killzone. Those are some of my favorite series on PlayStation. If they’re not gonna make anymore, then maybe a remastered collection of each could be negotiated.

DefenderOfDoom2642d ago

KILLZONE 2 was my reason for buying a PS3. If a new KILLZONE or RESISTANCE was coming out in 22 I would try to buy a PS5 immediately.

Lightning77642d ago

SSOD2 would be big for Sony. The only reason they would be interested in it is if they can turn it into a live service game.

In which I can see that happening.

Hauntedasylum8642d ago

Hell yeah, brother. You and me both.

For anyone trying to understand @Lightning77’s comment, they had a typo, this should clarify:

SOD2
Superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial, also known as manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase, is an enzyme which in humans is encoded by the SOD2 gene on chromosome 6.

After 5 killzone games including portable Sony felt it needed a break I wouldn't say its abandoned however I believe we may randomly get a ps5 remaster with improved lighting to test the waters and eventually a full blown new game after all you can't just leave shadowfall on that ending

Horizon is priority now its a mega franchise for them maybe after Horizon they might revisit.

Imalwaysright641d ago

I refuse to play for online play but there is one game that would make pay for it and that's Resistance Fall of Man. That's the only game that would make me throw my principles out of the window without feeling ashamed of myself.

Remember in the mid 2000’s when nearly every developer started to do FPS or linear third person? Now nearly every developer wants to do open world exclusively because it’s the easiest type of game to leave things out and then expand upon the world with DLC.

So many fond memories of both Shadowfall and Mercenaries Vita online! Shadowfall's SP may have been weak, but the MP was still a ton of fun. I had a lot of time in both, and it's especially tough seeing the Vita's best mp experience get shut down.

RIP my old friends.

In my opinion, I thought the single player games was really decent too and was treated quite harshly by the critics, but then, I think the Killzone franchise as a whole was kinda under rated by the critics. I always enjoyed the story in these games and I liked the slower, more deliberate gunplay too.

I remember getting my PS4 on day 1 and the first game I installed was Killzone Shadowfall, my workmates and I would play it for hours on end, the mode whish switched between game modes was brilliant.

A world without Killzone Online. That it’s come to this…
