Games Getting a Price Hike in Canada; inFamous: Second Son Jumps Up by $10; Titanfall Unaffected

Canadian gamers woke up to a bad surprise today, as video game prices are suffering from a sudden hike ($10 in average) due to the recent drop of the canadian dollar compared to the US Dollar. The change is being operated across the board by all retailers (including digital stores like Sony's SEN, while the Xbox store seems not to have applied the change yet) on upcoming titles.

If it is due to our dollar being down 10 cents then why were games not $10 less a couple years ago when the Canadian dollar was worth 10 cents more than the US dollar.

What other games have been affected? I see nothing on the Xbox Store that has changed.

Abriael2665d ago (Edited 2665d ago )

Pretty much all upcoming games across all the retailers I could check. The only one I saw not affected is Evolve. If you buy stuff on the Xbox store you may want to preorder all you want now, because they'll probably hike the price later.

best bet is to buy digital copy that dont cost 10 dollars more and you dont even have to pay tax either and stop supporting the greedy retail stores with a cash grap.

Brad

Even the digital copies are going up. This is just stupid.

Thehyph2665d ago

PPP is not $1 CAD to $1 USD.
We've had a few years now in Canada where it's been one of the best places to buy video games, especially since the PSN/SEN doesn't charge the 13% in tax that retailers in this province would hit me with.
Still sucks though. I've noticed ebgames raising prices on upcoming games for a while.

Could be worse. (Read: Europe, Australia, etc.)

Can't you guys buy from the US store with pre-paid PSN cards?

jocomat92664d ago

@TheGreatAndPowerful nope. When i was giving my friend psn money. (im canadian hes american) i had to buy a psn card in the states in order to do so.Just so he could redeem the code that i sent him. Canadian psn code didn't work on an american account. so i assume vice versa.

Wonder if this is a scare tactic to try and get more people to pre-order games? Cause I seriously doubt a change in 10 cents to the dollar would bring about a $10 price hike.

I know Amazon has a pre-order price guarantee, so as long as you pre-ordered the game, no matter how much it goes up you will only pay the price that you pre-ordered it at.

I bet that as soon as word got out that game prices in Canada were going up $10, the pre-orders on games likely went up significantly across the world.

Patrick_pk442664d ago (Edited 2664d ago )

It is complete BS! I remember when the dollar was strong and we still payed the same or more than the regular price of video games. It is just a cash grab from our pockets.

I pre-ordered InFamous, MGS:GZ, and Destiny before all the prices have risen or will rise. I knew we would get fucked over again. But I only buy exclusives or only console exclusives that appeal to me. Thank god for my PC.

KingDadXVI2664d ago

I agree. Don't worry though our government is going to stop country pricing and bring parity to US prices for us, after they are done fleecing us to pad their pensions and pay more legal bills for Senators who are charged with Fraud. LMFAO, welcome to Canada.

@ KingDadXVI

Don't forget transfer payments to all the have-not provinces (Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Maritimes except Newfoundland) so they can maintain their progressive utopia. LMAO

This is all Rob Ford's doing, I swear!

psDrake2665d ago

Sorry but I am not paying that much for a game. I barely justify paying $60 for a game.

Will wait for a price drop.

SkippyPaccino2665d ago

that would be a good way of making people pre-order games " if you pre-order its 60$ and if you wait its 70$...That's how you make your pre-orders sales go up

SteamPowered2665d ago

Steam games do that very thing. Thief was 10% off as a preorder, full price after it dropped. Seems like they do that with quite a few new games. Didnt happen with Stick of Truth though :(

levian2664d ago

It would if that's how it worked. Just pre-ordered Dark Souls 2 today and was shocked to find out it was $70

memots2665d ago

You know how much Bs this is ?

When the Canadian dollars was worth more than the U.S dollars everything was on par, i wouldn't get a "rebate" because my dollars was worth more. Now i see all the time on digital download on pc and now they are increasing retails !!?

So in the end i still pay more wtf

HyperBear2664d ago

Yup, just one of the joys of being a Canadian gamer in a continent where one country controls the entire stocks, trading agreements and MSRPs of products.

I remember when EB Games initially increased the prices on all PS4 1st party games beginning last month, then it became all PS4/PS Vita and Xbox One 3rd party game prices rose middle of February. Then other retailers including Best Buy, Future Shop and Amazon.ca all increased their prices accordingly. And it wont be long till all Xbox One 1st party games increase to $69.99 as well...

Sad day for gaming in Canada, makes me wonder if I should re-think my decision to continue to be a gamer or not :(

rezzah2664d ago

Just means you wait until price drops. And by wait, I don't mean have your eyes glued to a web page that's refreshed every second.

Pick a game you want above all, get it and enjoy it while others drop in price.

You don't need to give up the entire hobby.

memots2664d ago (Edited 2664d ago )

@rezzah

Problem is Second Son was on my day 1 list. But it looks like i will wait.

DriveClub will remain day no matter what lol
