GamingBolt speaks to Doug Perkowski, CEO of OC3 Entertainment to talk about the next stage in facial animation.
Interesting interview Rashid. Facial animation is one of my favourite aspects in game development. I find it so interesting. "It was (and still is) one of the hardest problems in 3D because humans are so good at reading into the details of the human face." True, but every now and again you see facial animations that reach uncanny valley and for an instant you doubt what you are looking at. The Last Of Us, Beyond 2 Souls, Ryse and The Order:1886 are the games that come to mind in recent history that have made me say "wow, those faces look so real".
I understand what you're saying, but I disagree about the "uncanny valley" reference. When you say something has reached the uncanny valley, it means it makes you feel uncomfortable, psychologically and even physically to certain extents. The term is indicative of mild fear and blatant discomfort in those who are viewing such representations of humanity, which-- to me-- doesn't seem like much of a compliment to the developers and artists who poured so much time into creating lifelike renders.
Oh, really? I always thought uncanny valley meant that something is so realistic that you doubt what you are looking at is fake. I guess not.
No big deal! I didn't mean to go on such a rant, I just felt like clarifying.
Interesting interview honestly
