KOTOR 3 Fan Game In Development

KOTOR is still today one of the most popular Star Wars games ever made and the irony of it is that when it was first announced, many people questioned the fact that Star Wars would make an RPG and that it would be any good. Imagine the surprise once fans got to check out this amazing game?

Disney will have issue with this, but Im sure some of the kotor 3 story had been written.
As had characters and art work.

I have never understood why kotor 3 never got made, it defo would have made more money than the old republic and galaxies combined.

ive played many games across the majority of platforms.
The KOTOR series and the jedi knights series are some of my best gaming moments to date.
They really should focus on those sorts of games again.

But see this quote from the article:

"We’ve established contacts in the Star Wars gaming industry and the hope is that once our draft is done they will help us get the game pitched . . ."

It seems to me that they'd be trying to get the game legitimately picked up by the lawful license holder. Chances of that are practically nil, of course, but still. . .it's a nice thought.

Please no. EA have taken some of my favourite franchises and destroyed them in an attempt to broaden their market appeal. With EA at the helm, the developer (presumably BioWare) would be forced to make all sorts of changes - think Dragon Age: Origins to Dragon Age 2.

I'd love a true KotOR III, but I have zero faith in such a project if EA are involved.

I disagree. Whilst there were design decisions I disagreed with (which very well could have instigated by BioWare) EA is a common entity such poor sequels.

The game was rushed - end of. Very little in the way of environments, shorter plot, player decision bottle-necking (which was so clearly a result of lack of implemented alternatives). I don't give BW a free pass, but it's all too clear when EA rushes a game to market. I have no reason to see why KotOR III would be any different.

Let's be honest, with KOTOR 3 there is very little reason to play SWTOR.

SWTOR is literally KOTOR 3 with an MMO slapped on to it. The MMO part of it is pretty lame to. But it satisfies that SW RPG fix.

If there was a KOTOR 3, I would forget all about SWTOR.

Damn, I hope not...I believe one day the gaming gods will hear our cries and answer our prayers. It may not be tomorrow, it may not be this year, but by the gods, we had better get a damn KOTOR game sometime in the future.

Seriously though, here's what I don't understand. Maybe we aren't as a big of a mass as I think we are, but every star wars fan who plays video games wants another KOTOR. For all these companies obsessed about making money *cough*...EA...how have they not jumped on this?

Well, look at it this way, people had be clamoring for an X-Wing/TIE Fighter game for years. But according to the powers that be not enough gamers were interested space sims. What's Star Citizen up to now?

Yea, the interest was there, its always been. The SW license is incredibly viable even after all the crap LucasArts threw at us over the years.

Seriously very few licenses can literally be used in any genre and work.

The problem? LucasArts (mostly). LucasArts is why we can't have nice things. Their handling of the SW franchise has been abysmal. They were completely out of touch with the fans they actually had.

I'll be honest, as much as I would enjoy a KOTOR 3, I'd rather nothing that came from LucasArts be allowed to taint it.

But I really doubt this will happen.The lack of KOTOR 3 is really the only thing that makes SWTOR interesting at all. They shut down SWG for that very reason. We'll see though.

The only problem with most of what you said is that LucasArts isn't around anymore. I agree, they did an unfortunate job with the license, but they don't really exist anymore. A little in name, thanks to disney, but I believe they as a studio don't exist. So what's stopping it now?

There was actually and interesting article in Game Informer talking about LucasArts. They actually had a very impressive development staff with a lot of great ideas that actually worked. They also had many of the titles we wanted (Jedi Knight, Kotor, Battlefront) in the works at one time. The problem was George Lucas and his hand picked management staff would literally walk in and scrap years of concepts and plans on a whim. They had a fully working build for 1313 that sounded genuinely interesting, and Lucas came in and said make it a generic shooter, those are hot right now.

So while I agree the company itself didn't put out much good in the end, I think we owe it to the people who did try to create top of the line content to be specific with the blame.

Yea, I should have clarified what I meant, cause I totally have to agree with that. Man, I want to be kind to good ol' George cause he gave us the Star Wars Universe, but just awful management style and I think he was a control freak.

That's why I said (mostly). Disney is going with 7, 8, and 9 so that's most likely the big reason why they are holding off on game development. Though it could just be more of the same.

I'm pretty sure George Lucas had zero involvement with LucasArts. Though the leadership there is mostly to blame. It was just downright poor. All the talent in the world doesn't mean anything if you don't make the games your fans want.

As for 1313, that was nothing, literally nothing. What we all saw was a hand crafted demo of a concept to would have liked to do. An interactive teaser trailer. Nothing was final, which begs the question; Why was it shown at all? I think it had something to do with the sale to Disney. LucasArts had to know this game was most likely going to be shelved.

LucasArts didn't really use their in house development team much. I think they started using it again with The Force Unleashed. Then after TFU 2's failure people left and then they started planning for 1313 a while later. They were NOT doing BF3 or anything else.

TL;DR - Blame goes to the top of LucasArts for being completely out of touch with their fanbase. George had nothing to do with LucasArts(unless he decided to screw with canon). 1313 was an idea, not a game. That E3 demo was all they had.

didn't KOTOR 1 win game of the year in 2003? I never understood why after all of these years BioWare never made a sequel to their ONLY game of the year.

Technically, SWTOR could be seen as a sequel. There was a book made called Revan which picks up where KOTOR 1 and 2 finished and bridges the gap between them and SWTOR. Even the Jedi Grand Master in SWTOR is related to Revan and Bastilla.

I support the idea of this and hopefully it gathers enough attention for Bioware to go ahead and put out a real KotOR 3, but I really do not want an outside dev (Obsidian included) working on a game in this series.

This will get shut down long before seeing the light of day, and an official one won't happen either. Games don't come back from MMO'ification, that's just how it is. This is on my phantom day 1 list right up there with warcraft 4.

They should and most definitely know that what they are doing is illegal. There is no way this is going to see the light of day. If they were true fans of the series then they should have done it differently. Maybe making a POC and presenting it to the rightful owners, or better yet, making and entirely original game and story in the style of the previous games. Could have still been sci fi. Would have kept what made the real games good. And most importantly, it wouldn't be shut down.
