A preview via EGMR for the upcoming From Software game Dark Souls II.
Quote: "Dark Souls II is one of those that will appeal to a very specific audience for a very specific audience. But as far as niche games go, it also represents one of those better examples of a hybrid experience that can be picked up by others. If you’re curious about the Dark Souls series but could never really get into the previous titles then now might be the ideal chance to jump in. It’s a lot more difficult this time around, as if that’s even possible, but it also has an actual difficulty curve, in a strange contrast.
From Software are really hoping to bring it with Dark Souls II and in a few weeks we’ll know for sure whether or not it has solidly been brought — just do pack an extra pair of undies. And maybe a pillow to cry into. "
Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.
DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.
The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.
I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.
I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
TheGamer writes, "Some weapons resist the test of time."
The Nerd Stash: “Whether you’re here to gloat about your victories or to see what the fuss is about, we present to you the hardest bosses in the Souls series.”
Trying to appeal to a broader audience by making it easier, or adding difficulty settings would only piss off all of their current fans.
The difficulty is one of my favorite things about the game, if they ever change that it just wouldn't be the same game.
Well they addressed an important issue, since i know a lot of friends who gave up after 2-3 days of crying like little girls and breaking controllers, cause the game is brutally difficult from beginning to end especially for an average gamer. But Dark Souls 2 is also bringing some changes that will make it more difficult, like being invaded even when you're hollow or things like time-limited summoning (no more summoned players doing all the work for you), you will also loose maximum health each time you die......so even if the intro might be easier, the game itself looks like it's gonna be even more difficult.
This is very smart strategy, instead of constant dread they will build hope then smash it into complete and utter desperation. Now that's really soul-crushing!
One of the reasons I kept my PS3 was for this. Dark Soul's is my favourite game of the last gen and March can't come soon enough. I think beating Demon's Souls definitely helped a lot when playing Dark Soul's, as I had become accustomed to the difficulty, and eventually you accept dyeing as almost a necessary mechanic to help you learn.
I think one of the misconception's regarding the Soul's games is that some people think that when you die you lose all your progress in the game, when actually you only lose your soul's and humanity, and return to the last bonfire visited. It's not a Roguelike lol.
Also it's refreshing that with the dumbing down and hand-holding prevalent in a lot of games today, the Soul's series goes against this trend. I think it shows that From has a lot of respect for the fans by not going down that road. Making it 'more accessible' doesn't necessarily equate to being easier to play, just easier to understand maybe.
So Prepare to Die, again (and again....)
I really hope the PC version comes out in March.
