Paul Izod of Faulty Pixel looks back at virtually unknown action hack & slash title Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer from the days of the original Xbox. He looks into why he remembers it so fondly and talks about why some games capture your attention while others don't.
Paul Izod looks back at original Xbox title, Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer, from Vivendi & High Voltage Software.
DHGF: Please note this is not a “Top 10″ list highlighting what I consider the absolute best games available on the original Xbox. Rather, this is a look at ten games that have had a strong cult following since they were released on the Xbox, even if they are obscure or unheard of by the mainstream or casual gamer. This list will only include games that were Xbox console exclusives. This means no remakes, no cross-console titles, and no titles that have been re-released on XBLA as a digital download.
The goal of this piece is to inspire a combination of conversation amongst older gamers, nostalgia over titles both loved and forgotten, and hopefully exposing younger gamers to ten titles that might not have had the largest advertising but still have a loyal following due to their quality. Who knows? If you missed one (or more) of these ten games, perhaps this piece will inspire you to track them down and see why they hold a special place in the hearts of gamers who experienced them.
Welcome to this week's, "Sequel, Spin Off, Start Over or Stay Dead?" Each week Diehard GameFAN is going to look at a dormant franchise that was once pretty popular, but for some reason has disappeared into the sands of time. Diehard GameFAN staffers will have four options for what they want to have happen to the series and you can see them in the title of this piece.
This week, Diehard GameFAN is looking at a pretty unusual franchise in that it was a trilogy of games with each of the games ending up on a different system. The original game was only for the Xbox and later, a cleaned up and expanded version came out for the Nintendo GameCube. The second game in the series, Wayward was a Sony Playstation 2 exclusive and the third game, Redeemer was exclusive to the Xbox. In a sense, only a true fan of video gaming itself would be able to enjoy the entire series with its tight continuity and fleshed out characters as they would need to own all three systems from that console generation. The first and the third games were popular with critics and all three sold decently enough thanks to the level of quality in the titles and because of the large installed fan base that was came with White Wolf's World of Darkness. Although the two Vampire: The Masquerade games for the PC are better known to the average gamer, this trilogy remains the most successful WoD video game product. Seven years after the last game in the Hunter: The Reckoning series has been released, is there enough life in the series to help it rise from the grave while Vampire: The Masquerade rests in peace? It's time to take a look.
I think it would be cool to see a new Hunter: The Reckoning. Plus I would love to see if High Voltage Software could bring the series to the PSP. I could see Hunter: The Reckoning being a really cool game on the PSP. Plus the Quantum 3 Engine already works for the PSP. So I would love to see were the series could go next if brought to the PSP.
Wow, this is a game I wouldn't ever thought I'd see again! When me and my GF just met this is one our first games we played together awesome. I might break out my PS2 for Wayward today to take another crack at it. Thanks for the quick trip down mems!
This is another one of those franchises that, if it made a comeback, my interest in getting an XB1 would increase. I loved playing this game back in the day- quite a few friends had an OG Xbox.
But alas...
