GTA IV Tops 1 Million in UK, Holds on to No.1; 360 Tops Chart

TheGamerReviews writes: It seems the British public can't get enough of Grand Theft Auto IV, as overall sales have reached 1 Million units sold across the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This is despite a hefty 77% drop in sales this week. Rockstar is not the only one happy, as Microsoft can break a smile as 62 percent of GTA IV sales last week were on Xbox 360, widening the gap between the consoles as it was 55 percent the week before. It seems GTA is no longer considered a Playstation game as most of the sales in the UK now on Xbox 360.

yeah.

So what happens if GTAV only comes out on Playstation 3 then?

Would xbox owners still pick up the ps3 version and try playing it on their xbox?

kewlkat0076241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

1. It was inevitable..with Ms's "1 Year strategy" which was able to saturate the Market with "potential user-base" before this game comes out(mind you this game was suppose to be out way before).

2. Plus the "Exclusive money deals".(which might have swayed gamers with the already lower price console.)

Look at DMC4 no longer just a PS game...

A lot of changing, there is more focus now on 1st-party games. You still have MGS and the FF series left to go multi-plat, whether it will who knows but "Snake" is leaving us as well.

Sh^ won't be the same..Some of the biggest 3rd-party franchises are slowing down or have gone multi.

clintos596241d ago

I agree with u life goes on and tons of more games that I like better then this overrated game. Anyways MGS4 is more of a game I want to play then GTA4 and even if this is big news for MS, they do remember they are the ones who payed 50 million for extra content so they should be happy with this. Funny thing is I think its safe to say the ps3 has benefitted more with GTA4 with console sales more then 360 has but these guys will never through in those numbers because they are only looking at software sales.

FreeMonk6241d ago

Do you think that GTA 5 will be a PS3 exclusive??

Think again. With EA buying out Take Two which owns the GTA francise, I can guarantee that it will be multi-platform as all EA games get released on nearly all platforms.

I wouldn't be suprised if EA creates a DS GTA game!

Also remember that this crap about the X360 not being able to handle the graphics of GTA5. Yeah, that will probably be true, but how many years off is the next GTA game? 3 years? 4 years?

By that time the new, more powerful Xbox will be out, and more than capable of running a new GTA game!

The main thing here is that EA will own Take Two by the time the new GTA is out, and they will milk it for all it worth all the platforms they can!

sonarus6241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

Mods need to ban news posting privileges from idiots.

This is a duplicate story though, but its all good. Congrats to all the 360 fanboys soaking up the good news...you guys deserve it

kewlkat0076241d ago

We all know EA. GTA5 will not be exclusive, no way in hell.

Either way bad news....

le killer6241d ago

just look at the sales figures! do you really think microsoft are gonna let rockstar just not make the game because of a lack of hdd?? they will say make the game, and slap "hdd only" on the package! by then, the 360 will be in close to 30mil homes..and most will have hdd's by then anyway. and the rest...will just have to buy one!

and as to disc space, i saw something wrote on here the other day which said. make the game on two discs if it was needed. 1 disc to load permanently onto the hard-drive, and the second to compliment the first with the extra bits needed! so in theory, you only need one disc to play...not ideal, but better than no gta imo.

The gaming GOD6241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

Houser already said the 360 might not be able to get the next 360 due to the lack of hard drives in most of the skus and the lack of space on dvd9. The man specifically said the 360 has to do something about their storage if they want the next Gta game

Even if EA buys out take 2 and wants to go multi platform like they always do, it's possible the game simply CAN'T be made multi platform.

If the developer tells you it can or can't be done, then it can or can't be done. Regardless of how many suit and tie businessmen are involved.

sak5006241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

If the sales/Dollars speak louder than words then his words have no meaning.

Edit: @below:

SO games with even bigger environments and longer gameplay like MassEffect/Oblivion can get released on single dvd9 but not the next GTA? And this one btw was around 7.2gb. Ever heard of compression? THey can even make it HDD only version so whats stopping them?

Edit #2 way below. Thanks mate. Same to u .

Edit #3 @below: Comeon who wouldn't want to taste the money pie? Why make something for one console only when you've already made a very successful game on the other console as well. Its not that they have to learn new things, they'll probably end up using same engine and using more tweaks and stuff to iron out the issues. And dont expect V to come anytime soon. IN next 2-3 years the user base of both console will be even higher.

The gaming GOD6241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

Sales/Dollars don't make dvd9 disc capacities any larger or hard drives magically appear into every 360 console. My point was is that even if they try to make it about the money, If it can't be done, then it can't be done. Plain and simple

@Edit for above- Of course I've heard of all that. The thing is so have the developers that make the games. So even with that knowledge, Houser STILL said it.

Besides, every developer is different. Just because ONE team can do something with their game doesn't mean another team can do the same thing with their own game.

@ Edit- for sak-

Dude, I feel you on that. EVERYONE wants that green stuff (money). But money doesn't always make the impossible possible. True, the install base for both systems in that 2-3 year time span will be way higher. But that goes back to what I said, money doesn't make everything possible. The install base doesn't nullify dvd9 size or the 360 owners without a hard drive. Yeah, you're right, they may very well even use the same engine. But even then, we don't know what alterations they'd make

whateveryousay6241d ago

You both have good points. I just hope the conversation stays reasonable. This is n4g, so you know some fanboy from 360 or ps3 is gonna say something to mess it up

Bubbles for both

shadow_hearts6241d ago

and so is UK

PS3 had a better attach ratio

UK will be in SONY's pocket by September 2008

Ahh, so its SEPTEMBER 2008 now. Okay. I guess I'll wait again.

le killer6241d ago

anywhere other than here anytime soon...man your the worst fanboy ever

Maddens Raiders6241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

Doesn't the fact that it's considered a "Playstation" game in the first place inherently mean that it's a Playstation game? Nevermind the fact that Rockstar's future offerings of such will be on the PS3.

Just goes to show that people want what Playstation is all about. Everyone wins.

Silellak6241d ago

Final Fantasy was a "Nintendo game". It certainly isn't now.

Marceles6241d ago (Edited 6241d ago )

Well everything had to start somewhere, it's not like Final Fantasy has ever been a multiplat until FF11 came out, and FF certainly wasn't gonna start on the Atari. They needed the CD technology so they went with Playstation, and no one was gonna say "buh buh it's a Nintendo game!"... Nintendo just chose to stick with cartridges instead of coming out with the N64 DD. FF is just a bad example...Crash Bandicoot was a "Playstation" game, it's not now, Sonic was a "Genesis/Dreamcast" game, we can go on and on...

The more the merrier I guess.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies414d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken414d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69415d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker415d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos415d ago (Edited 415d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt414d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken414d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Anniversary: The Beginning of the Age of RAGE

Grand Theft Auto 4 is an important game for Rockstar, not least because it was the first title in the franchise to use the newly created RAGE engine.
