PS4 Owner receives Electric Shocks, Asks If He Should Exchange Console

You know that moment when you're tapping away at a faulty piece of electronic equipment, getting electric shocks, and you're not sure whether you should keep tapping or return it to the manufacturer? PSN user Bogusm had that very problem with his PlayStation 4 and, rather than take it back to the retailer to be exchanged for a working console, he took to the PlayStation forums hoping to get advice on the issue.

It's Winter, 9/10 it's because his home is dry and static is building up. Buy a humidifier first, and that will likely solve the problem.

Assuming this isn't some strange defect my words of wisdom would be buy a humidifier and/or eject the disc from the controller. What a complete idiot though.

That depends; If it's life threatning you should make your way to the nearest ER immediately! Don't worry about contacting the police, since we here on N4G know of the incident, we will send them to Hospital after giving them our statements. Also depending on the outcome, that is if you know.....survive! I have no problem being a material witness if decide to file legal actions, but first thing you need to do is file an restraining order! It's always good to have something on paper.

Now if the incident was non life threatning, give your PS4 a firm but commanding rap on it's casing and carry on.

i get a static shock sometimes when grabbing the controller or touching the on/off buttons on the ps4, but i also get shocked from touching light switches in my house. It's wintertime here and it's extremely dry in our house so whenever the humidifier is off it makes everything zap crazy.

A lot of electrical products will do this, and is the result of more than the actual product.

My old DVD player used to give me tiny electric shocks when I touched the screws on the outer case, but it never once broke in it's entire life. It was completely reliable till the day I swapped him with a bluray.

The entire casing, with the exception of the connectors on the back, is made of plastic, a non conductive surface. The components inside are all mounted through the chassis of the system and grounded through the power cable. The chance that an electrical shock sufficient enough to jump from anything on the inside to a person is so slim it's laughable. If things like that happened, the charge would be so great that it would blow fuses on the motherboard or fry the system. It takes a pretty large amount of power to jump even a small distance through air.

This shock is static shock, which at times can be quite harsh, particularly in cold weather. The shock that Akuma is talking about is static discharge. The reason it shocked him when touching the screws on the back of the case is because the case screws are grounded by design. People who modify or repair their own computers do the same thing to discharge any static they have built up in their body, because it's better than it discharging on the interior components.

I was using a wired controller but it was not the MS one. I used a FPS Pro controller, but now that I think about it I did not have the shocking issue with my wireless MS controller

Well, duh...there's not enough juice in 2 AA batteries...or a rechargeable pack...to shock you, especially since plastic is an insulator. With a wired controller, you've got a direct line from the console to your controller, and passed on through the wired headset. Granted, you're not getting 110V passed along that connection...but it could certainly be on par with what's in a live telephone wire (yes, a telephone wire can shock you).

This is most likely due to Static Electricity. I've shocked myself on many items be careful though. Don't wanna short out your electronics :P.

The only times I've had a shock from electrical equipment its been the full 240 volts (UK standard). Winters here are very damp so I've never experienced the static problems people have mentioned.
I'm feeling a little left out now, I may have to go and stick my fingers in a light socket again (don't ask, I was very young and flew 8 ft through the air, great fun).

It's just static discharge built up in his body. The shock isn't coming from the system, but from him. If it was coming from his system, then his system would be fried by now to discharge that much electricity through a non-conductive surface(literally electricity jumping through air). Motherboards and components are made to blow fuses nowadays to prevent just such a thing.
