Nintendo confirms it will make apps and possibly games for smartphones

It looks like the rumours are true; Nintendo will soon start developing smartphone apps and possibly games.

Anything that they release on smart devices will be for the sole purpose of advertising their hardware and software. They aren't expanding their business onto IOS and Android, as stated in the article. If they do release games, they won't be full fledged releases.

They technically didn't say anything specific. Here is the quote from Iwata, "I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement.”

Sounds to me like they will release apps featuring their characters but they won't be full fledged games. He is basically saying that you can expect to see something but don't expect to see the next installment of Mario on IOS.

I think they could probably do a great Talking Tom-like game with a choice of the Mario characters. After all, the only reason I was unimpressed by Talking Tom is that the characters are completely unlikable.
I mean, just imagine being able to stroke Luigi's moustache on your phone. That's got me sold already.

Actually, it's just apps. Apps that'll be used to entice buyers to buy their hardware. Nintendo has already confirmed that they will not be developing mobile games, nor releasing older titles on mobile devices.
