The Problem with Game Reviews (Metrics)

Reviews are a mixed bag, that have the potential to be really informative and useful, or get in the way of fully appreciating games, and looking at them critically but constructively. I'm here to offer a solution to the flaw in the metric system.

do you know who the best game reviewer is?
answer: your self

we don't buy a game based on a review from a big gaming website we buy a game because we like the sires or developer or same genre or we try the demo of the game first if available

knack is a good example IGN give it 5.9/10 when I think it should of got 7-9/10. as I do love those type of games R&C, crash, spyro (not skylanders), sonic etc

Gigaguy7774173d ago

So we should buy the game, then tell ourselves whether we should buy it or not? Yeah, no. The best game reviewer is someone who can objectively tell what works and what doesn't in the game.

born2live4172d ago

I like to have the informed opinion of someone who's played the game and whose opinion I respect before I dish out $60 just to end up being disappointed.

The trick is to find the reviewers who perceive a specific gaming genre the same way as you do and who keep their integrity throughout their reviews. Not easy these days, there're too many bad/sell out reviewers out there...

CRASHBASHUK4172d ago (Edited 4172d ago )

wth? I didn't say that :S
so you telling me IF you got the last of us based on a review or from the developer? I think most of them got it because of the developer oh and I think the same can be said for GTAV and game sires

aLucidMind4172d ago

He's saying to take game reviews with a grain of salt rather than just going "they say it is bad/good, so it is bad/good" like many do.

reeereeeree4173d ago

This is a great video. Ive always thought a scale of 10 was unecessary. I hope his proposal catches on.

KillrateOmega4173d ago (Edited 4173d ago )

Not a bad proposal. Not bad at all.

You do realize your "must buy," or "pass" verdicts are essentially just subjective replacements for a number system right?

This isnt THE problem with reviewing games, there are so many...

My personal method is to list the important factors under the following, Gameplay/Story/Art/Intangibles . Give each factor a number based on its negative or positive impact in those categories. At the end see if there is a positive or nevative score.

This fixes a few things. One, a game without gameplay, (text based adventure,) wouldnt get docked points for not having gameplay. Two, listing everything out based on the category gets rid of your mind dwelling or forgetting important issues... Many times you will be so pissed off or amazed at some element and start scoring irrationally. Three, this fixes the absurd amount of current 10/10 reviews. How? With a point scale with no limit, an incredible game right now, (TLoU,) might score a +34 for me, but in ten years a new game might score a +57. (Oscar winning actors/writers, perfect controls/gameplay.)

Is there still problems? Yeah obviously, someone might have numbers that are in no way correspond with what you think. But at least its better than someone NOT placing a score or you spennding 15 minutes looking for a verdict in some as*holes pretenious essay. God i feel like this has been brought up before. And those comments look suspicious as hell.

Here would be an example of a gameplay category
Bioshock: Infinite (Review)

GAMEPLAY

At its core, Infinite has solid controls for it's weapons and Vigors, and both feel responsive. (+7)

Skyhooks as well as Elizabeth bring some variety to the gun fights and offer different angles of attacks, whether its launching yourself from the sky to strike an enemy, or Elizabeth throwing the player ammo when he/she is running low. These elements make the engagements a little more exciting and also give the players more options. (+4)

The majority of the game is spent walking or running to the next section, but occasionally skylines are used which is a nice change of pace. (+0)

The overall level design for the shooting sections are uninspired and repetitive. The same can be said for the mission structure, often times the game will force players to backtrack through the same sections they just finished and make them fight the whole way, which is a cardinal sin. (-8)

There are only a handful of enemy types and the Handymen are not in the same league as the Big Daddies from the first Bioshock. (-2)

Very limited interactivity with the world besides listening to audio logs. (-1)

Gameplay Points +1

All reviews are subjective, that isn't the proposal being presented or even discussed here.

Ultimately, I feel that breaking down those elements and associating numbers with them have the potential to make things more complicated than they need to be. Technically, a system like that would be a 4 number scale, but the naming convention goes a long way vs numbers. Numbers don't provide real context. A half a score for a game doesn't really do much to tell someone whether it's worthy of their time, when it could actually be a pretty good game that they would enjoy.

And so many people and outlets have different ways of interpreting the numbers, whereas a word system gives you the needed information upfront! At least, that's the idea. As for your method, many review sites (ign included) already use that system. How would a game without a story fair in a system such as that? A game like TitanFall, for example, wouldn't really have much in terms of a story (or any for all we know), so how could you give it a number based on that?

Also, where have you seen this brought up before in this way? And what comments are you referring to? I'd love to know!

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.

They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.

jznrpg2d ago

I’m sure many would want bold and creative done well, but that’s easier said than done. I like variety so give me a little bit of everything, done well of course.

Nightcrawler893d ago

Hope they use his vision in the game

Inverno3d ago

Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?

Scissorman2d ago

it was not. it greatly expanded the areas and puzzles to the point where it felt like an entirely new game. the enemies and boss fights were given a MASSIVE upgrade. the abstract daddy fight in particular was incredible. and the team added two new endings.

Pedrof3d ago

I wouldn't hold my breath on "bold".

The game decided to end its service and operations?

jznrpg50d ago

That’s one way to shift blame

Vits50d ago

I mean… it was pretty underwhelming. They basically slapped on that overused “neon remaster” aesthetic that a bunch of older revivals have leaned on, cranked up the speed a bit, and called it a day. No real innovation, no fresh ideas, just a faster, flashier version of something we’ve already seen.
