The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes is the first computer game officially licensed by the Conan Doyle Estate. It features familiar personalities including Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Mycroft, Inspector Lestrade and more than 100 historical characters that will launch players into the world of the eccentric and famous detective. For each of the 16 individual cases, an overall storyline is revealed and a list of potential suspects is whittled down until the perpetrator is ultimately exposed.
Gamesradar: "How would Holmes solve the Mystery of the Missing Choco cookies? According to this game, he'd first find one of the messiest rooms in Great Britain – not a problem – and use a magic time machine to turn it into a spot-the-difference puzzle. After discovering about 16 discrepancies, he'd move on to another – equally messy – room and hunt for a shopping list of random crap like champagne glasses and bits of rope. He'd probably pause for a moment to play a sliding block puzzle, or re-assemble a torn note. Then he'd put his brain to work assembling the shifty-looking rogues gallery in front of him into categories, such as 'Male', or 'Wears scarf', or 'Is covered with bits of cookie crumbs'."
The best thing about The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes is that the price tag is only $19.99. Given that a trip to see a 90-minute movie, counting ticket and refreshments, will run close to $20, this is a better investment. As it worked out, the play through of all sixteen cases took all of about 10 hours. All in all, not a bad deal.
Unless you are a big fan of Hidden Object games 411 recommend you avoid this and invest in a puzzler that offers a variety of challenges and is actually fun to play. However in the grand scheme of things it is not awful, just a game hamstrung by the sub-genre it is in.
