This is a fabulous guide for starting out with the game. I have been playing for a couple days, and kind of figured most of this out, but wasn't real clear, and it didn't give any spoilers on what is to come. If you are having troubles getting the basics down, give this guide a try.

There's something I think is really helpful:
Gather 12 flowers and in that science machine make a hat called GARLAND. http://dont-starve-game.wik...
It keeps your sanity high, so you don't have to worry too much about this stat.
-
Another one: Instead of doing the basic firecamp, do a FIREPIT. http://dont-starve-game.wik...
It is not destroyed when the fire goes down and you can easily add fuel later and make it burn again.
-
Finally, the first unlockable char (slight ability spoilers ahead) has an unique item: her personal and infinite lighter.
When playing with her you don't have to worry about making light sources for the night.
