Cloud gaming has never seemed closer. Sony’s $380-million Gaikai acquisition finally bore fruit at CES 2014, where the company announced PlayStation Now — a hugely ambitious initiative that could revolutionize the distribution of video games. PlayStation Now lets you stream PlayStation 3 games over the internet to almost any device imaginable, from Sony TVs and the PS Vita to smartphones and tablets. It’s not the first service to promise something similar, but Sony is certainly the biggest company to attempt it. And with the PlayStation 3’s vast library as a starting point, it’s the most likely to succeed.
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki and CFO Lin Tao talked about the state of the PlayStation business and the strategy and targets going forward, including how they're responding to the tariffs.
Sony announced its financial results for the fiscal year 2024, and things are certainly looking up, despite a decline in PS5 sales.
If their profits fall next quarter, we'll probably see more price hikes. I can't imagine having to pay £20 a month for PlayStation Plus.
Decline in hardware sales.
Behind on lifetime sales and decline in first party sales.
Third party content and PSN came through to save the day.
Things will improve starting with the next Ghost game.
Hopefully a steady flow of first party content by end of '25
PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units worldwide, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2025.
very nice.
in almost 5 years too.
some big hitters are yet to come
Again, Onlive.
Not even remotely.
Wait a second...please tell me this isn't one of the fanboys that constantly tries to dismiss Cloud-Computing and MS's Vastly Superior Network by immaturely saying "power of da cloudz" or flipped out on the idea of having to buy digital media that couldn't be traded because of DRM and such....it seems like RIGHT(Playstation...)"NOW " we are seeing the BIGGEST 180 ever. But fanboys are so committed to the Sony brand now that they are willfully blind. I'm all for this kind of tech, but it's amazing how hypocritical some fanboys are.
The future of gaming? No. A cool cornerstone along the way, sure. Hardware will ALWAYS be neccesary, this is just a cool FEATURE/SERVICE, it's by no means an end-all be-all of the industry. The internet in general where it stands won't let this be more than a cool feature. We can't even talk about future possibilities with this until we get faster, more consistantly reliable internet. Plus, people need things that can work off the grid, if your net goes down and you're stuck with nothing but an expensive paperweight, that sh*t ain't cool
if this is the future of gaming then im out. I call all cloud gaming bullshit.. i want to be able to play games offline.. i want to be able to play my games for years if i want to and not be dictated by a company and their support for their cloud service and games
