Sony announces PlayStation Now, its cloud gaming initative

The PlayStation 4 won't recognize discs from previous Sony game consoles, but that might not matter for long. Sony has just announced PlayStation Now, a service that will bring streaming PlayStation games to PS4, PS3, PlayStation Vita, and even televisions, tablets, and smartphones. Games like TLOU and Beyond Two Souls will be available.

Playstation Now looks AMAZING! Assuming everything works smoothly, this has huge potential to change the market.

himdeel3761d ago

I have to try it before I will make any decisions. Also Im still curious about the price.

mikeslemonade3761d ago

Well much of the keynote he was emphasizing how affordable and accessible it would be. There's also a rental based option.

Hopefully there's a PS Plus deal where you can get PS Now on discount. I wanna join that beta that starts in January.

gaffyh3761d ago

The biggest megaton within this announcement is that it isn't only for Sony platforms. Sony could make a shitload of money from this if they're smart.

ipach3761d ago

we'll see the web filled with hands on reports from the CES floor soon enough... that will be so trippy to see TLOU and Beyond screenshots from a Vita... And I'm guessing the bravias can now pair up with Dualshocks?

SilentNegotiator3761d ago

The pay model will make all the difference.

If you're still paying per game, I'm going to need to see a MAJOR discount for PS+ users to be interested.

thorstein3761d ago

Yeah. I am looking at price too! It would be nice to have it rolled into a PS+. Like PS++ so I only pay a few bucks more for the streaming. Or maybe just as part of PS+ but that is asking quite a bit.

vigilante_man3761d ago

This could be MASSIVE.

The potential is huge. Just think of all the PS1/PS2/PSP/Vita/PS3 titles available. For tablets and smartphones PS1, PSP and Vita games would be ideal.

You really need a controller for PS2 and PS3 games. If you could hook a DS4 or DS3 to a tablet then even better.

I have a Vita that plays my PS1 and PSP games just great. I also have my PS3 and PS4. For me PS2 games would be the initial interest.

This new tech could make Sony's vast range of PS1, PS2, PSP, PS Vita and PS3 games all come together for such a wider audience. Hate to sound like a Sony fanatic but they do seem to be all about the games right now. This is Sony's greatest time as a gaming company.

Let's wait until Playstation Now and Vita TV are in full swing.

zeee3761d ago

Hmmm... Ok, yes the potential to control the living room is huge but at what cost? Why would anyone buy a PS4 if all they need to play Sony games is just a simple subscription and an ipad/surface/android? Or will this service be available EXCLUSIVELY on Sony hardware (Xperia, Bravia etc.)?

Ares84HU3761d ago

Unimpressed.

But in all honesty that is the future of gaming. Say goodbye to your game collections because soon enough they won't sell games and you will only be able to play them on the "cloud".

Jvaughn6613761d ago

This is pretty much DRM, games are licensed not owned. How come when xbox try's to implement something like this it gets backlash? The whole point of the xbox ones DRM policy was to set up a system like steam. The whole always online always connected and region part was dumb, but was easily changed, but xbox missed out.

lemoncake3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

I was going to buy a new samsung tv for my bedroom at some point, seems like now i will be buying a sony TV.

dboyman3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

@Jvaughn661 Xbox One DRM scheme also affected physical copies of games. (Basically you don't own physical game, cannot play it) This Playstation Now setup is just for streaming games online and does not effect how you play disc based games

Ritsujun3761d ago

Meanwhile, Microsoft's heads are still in the clouds.
"Our 100,000 servers will make your Xbone 3 times more powerful!!!"

Jvaughn6613761d ago

@dboyman yes that is true, which made it unique. When games are licensed you own the right to play that game and nothing else, but when games are licensed they are sold at a much cheaper price like on steam. I personally rather buy a licensed cheaper game, then a one at full price. Also the licensed hard copies would of been for people with weaker internet connections. "But you can't sell or trade licensed games" yep. But MS had family sharing, and other features like allowing licensed games to be sold a certain number of times. At least the said they did. We'll never know though. I think these game licensing streaming systems like PSnow are the future though.

P0werVR3761d ago

Anyone who has tried a game streaming service will tell you that in ALL titles the graphics are lowered for a balance streaming service. So I can understand if this is solely ment for BC for games and general streaming entertainment. I'm more interested in what Sony will provide on the Cloud Computing for next gen gaming. So this feature is not that impressing.

mcstorm3760d ago

This sounds interesting and I said at the start of this gen than the xbox one and PS4 hardware is only a small side of what this new generation is going to be about.

This new gen has only just got started and im loving it so far but 2 to 3 years down the line the 3 consoles we have now will be nothing like they are now im looking forward to seeing what all 3 do. Still a great time to be a gamer.

mewhy323760d ago

I think that this is awesome!!! If they price this correctly then it will be a great success!!!!

ramiuk13761d ago

if it comes with subscription i hope its a fair price,if not and its per game it would be nice if people who had the pycical copy could insert the game disc and play it free.

Nitrowolf23761d ago

that is what I am hoping for.

Gazondaily3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Yeah I dont see why this cant happen. ...apart from maybe piracy concerns with PS2 games etc.

Cant wait to see developments on this.

Oh and trophy support for old games would be beastly.

dillhole3761d ago

Would love for this to happen but cannot see it happening. I get the feeling we'll be expected to buy everything again.

redwin3761d ago

Mmmmm, if Xbox comes out with a service on Xbox live that you would have to pay an added fee to play games that you already own or rent them, everyone would be saying that MS is evil, it's RDM, MS only cares about $. But this is Sony, has anyone ever disagree? Why did they make me buy a new system if they were coming with their own steam box and put all the games there? I feel like they just took my $300. ALL their games will be in playstation Now, if so, why do I need a PS4?

The_Troll_Whisperer3761d ago

@Red

I'm pretty sure only PS1-PS3 games are playable on mobile devices.

''...why do I need a PS4?''

Um, to play PS4 games.

TheSaint3761d ago

Why would you stream if you had the disc? (not trying to be a douche here genuine question)

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 3761d ago
Errefus3761d ago

yes sounds great, but while watching the guy said it will have a "subscription option" so i am assuming this service will be separate from play station plus. But other than that looks promising.

solidsheep3761d ago

I can see them giving like 2 free rentals to ps+ users a month.

GTgamer3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

So the beta starts This month O_O well this is gonna be interesting and its subscription based guess I'll be a lifetime customer.

Gamer19823761d ago

The main downside to this is allowing them to work on TVs and tablets. I get they want to shift them but its not gonna add that ability to help shift PS4. You DONT need a PS4 for this service like many first thought so this doesn't really affect Xbox one, one bit.. It does however help those who were worried moving on from previous consoles who don't want ot lose there game library.

iamnsuperman3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

It might have an effect on its competitor's sales. A PS4 is needed for PS4 games but it's good that they are making the old back catalogue available for all since now they can make money on older franchises which are just sitting their doing nothing. If they do get the service into Tvs or tablets/phones it might convince the average consumer to go playstation if they enjoy the games available. You put Uncharted on there and someone plays it (who hasn't played it before) likes it. They might be more inclined to buy a PS4 for the sequel. Essentially what this service will do is have mass penetration of the brand which could advertise it's more up to date products. Clever really (especially if they go the Netflix root and not have everything available at once)

Though, from a purely marketing point of view, they should limit it to Sony's Tvs and phone/tablet because that is one serious one up over the competition. But the mass penetration of the brand would be lost

qu1ckset3761d ago

How cares about. XBO , they already have 1.2million more consoles sold , and have tons still waiting plus it's not even out in japen yet. On top of that this playstion now service seems like it will be available on Sony only products from what I saw at the press conference so it's still all money in Sony's pocket at the the end of the day as long as it works as advertised , and depending on how good this cloud based TV Service is not only will don't be taking potential money out of microsofts pocket but also big service providers as well. And then to put the cherry on top they still have this rumored VR Headset to show off , sony is looking to storm the market for 2014!

KwietStorm_BLM3761d ago

It's just streaming older games. If you want PS4 games, you still need a PS4. That obviously affects sales.

DOMination-3761d ago

Isnt this just what they were planning to do with gaikai anyway? I'm not downplaying - this is in fact great but I'm confused with the reaction in here because I thought they announced this a year ago

Ron_Danger3761d ago

Now we have a face to the name.

DragonPs43761d ago

We didn't know what it would work with or when it would launch now we know both.

DOMination-3761d ago

Ok thats cool. I was just checking I wasn't missing something..

At least now I might be able to get FFX HD as I sold my ps3 as the trophies look fun.

MestreRothN4G3761d ago

Actually the input lag will be experience by anyone with a connection, regardless of its quality.

Langkasuka3761d ago

The long distance Remote Play for PS4-Vita has been shown to be running smoothly. PSNow is the same but for backwards compatibility, really looking forward to this.

Johnny Jiron3761d ago

@gobluesamg

He may not have used this service, but I did have Onlive, which seemed to have the same setup. 5mbps recommended and scaled graphics depending on connection and what not. The input lag was there no matter the game, but it wasn't too bad.
Think..Killzone 2. It gave a weighted feel, but didn't prevent you from reacting properly in game. However, with MP...that I cant comment on.But I imagine there may be some frustrating moments if yer used to a game playing a certain way.

Joey_Leone3761d ago

No it wont, it bothers me how gamers are getting exited over this, let me explain to you why this won't work, paying out of pocket monthly/yearly for what? To stream old games that you have to re purchase? To play games on a tablet wthout buttons? What if the service discontinues? Will you be able to play your games then? Same thing goes for digital downloads, its like a rental service. I prefer sony products. But this service is just bs if its not free for ps+ users.

Beastforlifenoob3761d ago

You can rent specific titles... Plus what if you didn't for some reason play the last of us but you want to go back and play it. its also on smartphones and TVS so anyone can acess it even if tey dont have a playstation

kopicha3761d ago

Thou it is not clear yet but when come to mobile devices I do believe it is only intended on PlayStation certified devices. Because this is an opportunity for them to brag about the platform.

Jvaughn6613761d ago

This is pretty much DRM, Always online always connected, games are licensed not owned. How come when xbox try's to implement something like this it gets backlash.

trouble_bubble3761d ago

You've said the same thing three times but still don't get it.

This doesn't DRM games you already own on consoles you already own. It lets you stream games from gens gone by on hardware they weren't made for. That they weren't previously able to. It's like an endorsed jailbreak/emulator.

If I can rent a PSVita game like Uncharted Golden Abyss in the future and finish it on PS4, without ever buying a Vita, and -still- continue buying physical discs for everything else.....HOW is this a bad thing??

Underworld3761d ago

I don't like the idea of being able to play Playstation games on other devices. Wouldn't this be better if it was just for PS4? It adds a big incentive for people to get a PS4 then. And wouldn't this affect PS3 sales too? What need is there to have a PS3? You no longer need one to play PS3 games. Can we even call games like The Last of Us and Uncharted PS3 exclusives anymore since you will be able to play them on almost any device?

The Playstation platform loses its exclusives with this except for PS4 exclusives. Why not just game on PC or even X1 and play the big catalogue of PS games on anything you want?

You will still need a 360 to play 360 games. But we can't say the same for PS3 games anymore.

I'm a big Sony and Playstation fan and it does sound cool, but i don't know if I like this direction.

If you disagree can you please say why. Interested to know.

Tru_Ray3761d ago

The incentive to buy a PS4 is to play PS4 games. I think that this platform is great because it broadens the market of potential gamers. End users can experience PS3 gems on their Bravia TVs and then graduate to cutting-edge PS4 games once they discover the incomparable joy of interactive entertainment.

This is a win-win for Sony!

Tru_

JeffGUNZ3760d ago

You'd think Sony would make it for PS4 only right now until their lineup of games is more established. Both consoles suffer from lackluster launch lineups, but Sonys is a disappointment for how great they are with producing killer exclusives. Make it a PS4 thing only first to make more incentive to buy a ps4. Then a few years down the road when their lineup of games is much stronger, then open it up on more sony based devices.

N4OGs3761d ago

yep forget that xbox one cloud bs. it aint cloud unless it got games you can play from it like the ps4. glad im getting the ps4 cant wait to play games on the most popular populated system for next gen. it crushes xbox live community. ps4 is facebook, xbox live is myspace. new era of ps4 domination baby!

kingduqc3761d ago

Console game run at 30 fps, add the latency from the streaming and the visual quality lost and I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Maybe good for older single player game but beside that..

3760d ago
Sarick3760d ago

Yes, innovation that will change the world of gaming.

Now need internet to play full time streamed games.
Hmm. "To play mandatory internet is needed"

No more piracy DRM because game are on their servers.
Hmm, "You only pay to play or rent the game"

Company can decide at any time to shut down a game.
Hmm "Like Netflix content would in/out on a whim"

Allows for future no disc consoles meaning no more trade ins at game stop.
Hmm, you can't trade the disc anymore.

Now titles are offered that wouldn't normally be compatible on any system. Example Sony could even sell these services for it's EXCLUSIVE games to any competing console or PC. If not for full play throughs it could be used to demo games influencing console sells.

Hmm, opens up a lot of cross platform options.

Allows for family share plans. You rent/own a game the rent time is usable on whatever console on one client stream.

Hmm, Off site DRM.

No more worry about having game saves on your console. If the console fails the save will be stored online. Also players can't openly HACK their saves. Last no need to have save file DRM. It's all online.

Hmm, I kinda like having the ability to backup saves on my end.

I can ditch my PS3 and play PlayStation games on my xbox one over the internet using their browser. Haha, kidding. They'll probably make you install a program to load it on PC.

Overall, what's the point of them building the ps4? Couldn't they stream those games too? I wonder what the downside is?

all the best games that people will actually want to play from past gen will be on there as well as probably all games owned by sony. then there will be people who want their games on it.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers17h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken4h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66912h ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle12h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

The new boss did a interview in japan he wants to tap into the mobile market like nintendio so he give 0 fucks about gamers/fans

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long21d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197221d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic21d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12521d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91321d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer21d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91320d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit20d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

Christopher21d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6920d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit20d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher21d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken21d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197221d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic21d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2321d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218321d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder21d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
