When i think of the 90's, I think of the...90's. not the mid to late 90's.
There was a wealth of games in the 90's like Sonic (1,2,3), Street Fighter 2, Ghouls and ghosts. Lots of ones that predate the shift to 3d gaming (which happened in about 94/95).
Call me old school but i dig sprite based 2D action/adv and space ship shmups like the Thunder Force series. the 90's as a whole represented the biggest change in gaming. it was a shift from the 2D style that had lasted since inception in the late 70's and ushered in the 3D style we still know today.
The change in game styles is even bigger than the change in media formats (cart/cd/dvd/bd).
I instantly thought in Age of Empires when I saw the title, though I prefer the second one, launched in 1999. Now that was serious magic, and the game is still enjoyable even after 15 years.
I preferred the games back then:) I've very fond childhood memories of ps1 games growing up.. Games had more heart back then.. Now its about DLC greedy developers and more about what consoles are selling the most..how times have changed...
Also, there were tons of new generes and new ideas of developers. Mch more unique games with larger diversity.
Today, everything is either a shooter or a racer.
