After changing things up by venturing into the realm of real-time strategy gaming with Halo Wars, Microsoft’s most popular shooter and most prominent I.P. has been taken in a new direction with the release of Halo: Spartan Assault. The game, which was first a PC slash mobile title, has now landed on the Xbox One and eschews first-person shooting and all of its tropes in favour of three-hundred-and-sixty-degree , twin-stick shooting. It’s an interesting change to say the least, and as a first effort the experience is a relatively impressive one, but it’s kept from greatness by questionable design decisions and an inability to stand out.
BNR: Ah, top-down shooters- one of the more arcade-ey genres with a measure of popularity today, there are quite a few of them on the market. Assuming you’ve played Asteroids (which drew inspiration from what many consider to be the first video game, SpaceWars) and want some more, which are worth your time? Don’t despair; my personal top-five is here! these are games that I personally really enjoyed- if you’re into top-down (also known as twin-stick) shooters, you’ll want to check these out.
My personal favorite TDS of all time is Dead Nation by House Marque. I loved that game so much, and clocked so many hours into it. Can't wait for Alienation.
With the latest update for the IOS games of Halo: Spartan Assault and Halo: Spartan Strike Xbox services have been added including achievements for both titles.

What’s quite incredible about Spartan Assault is that it has managed to encapsulate the atmosphere and design of the Halo games, previously exclusive to Microsoft systems, into the confines of an iPad. From the way troops behave, to the weapons and locations, it feels like an authentic Halo experience, even though it's a top-down dual stick shooter, rather than a FPS, and that’s the best thing Spartan Strike has going for it.
Could have bought this game for $3 on my phone, but opted for the $15 XB1 version knowing that they had to have fixed the number one complaint, only to find out they kept in the micro transactions.... complete BS and a waste of money. Micro transactions are for free-to-play games guys, knock this **** off...
To me this isn't Halo, so its a no buy.
It's alright, The controls are a bit cumbersome with the right them stick as the aim button, but what ever. Max and the curse of Brotherhood is a better bang for your buck.
