Rockstar sells 6 million units of GTA IV in 5 days

Vgchartz.com, the most comprehensive videogaming charts in the world, has announced that Rockstar sold roughly 6 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV during the first 5 days after the game's release. 4 million gamers purchased the game day one.

The game generated an estimated revenue of $390 million, exceeding Halo 3´s $280 million launch week. Worldwide sales split 4:3 in favour of the Xbox 360 while the Playstation 3 version saw a higher attach rate.

with software usually they are close to the truth, so even if they missed a million or added a million GTA4 still sold a lot and its just like they said 4:3 in favor of 360 and ps3 have higher attach rate(more % of ps3 owners buying GTA4 than 360)
but if they were right then 6 million is a huge number!! well they deserve it because they made a fine game!!

4:3 = x360: PS3 in SW sales with PS3 winning europe in SW sales and X360 winning USA

However in terms of HW sales PS3 won USA and especially EUROPE by BIG MARGINS

Pretty dam good sales, its still odd the PS3 has not outsold the 360 considering GTA is a PS franchise and that Sony has 120 million PS2 owners. Seems like the PS3 should have outsold the 360 by default considering how well past GTA games have done on PS2 you'd think every PS3 owner would have owned the past games.

I dissagree with zypher's spin, Sony banked on bringing massive amounts of PS2 owners with this title crushing the 360 with hardware and software numbers its not working so far, the fanbase ratio excuse is just that! an excuse.

GTA San Andreas sold 17 million units worldwide on Playstation 2 and 2 million more on the original Xbox. It's bigger than Dragon Quest (Sales wise). Dragon Quest games sell about 4 - 5 million units worldwide.

Well than GTA games sell on average 8 million units in the United States where as DQ games sell about 4 million in Japan. Making the GTA franchises bigger than Dragon Quest (Sales wise).

I really like the game on my 360 and knowing that it was a multiple console game, it didn't surprise me one bit that it would beat Halo 3's numbers. Had it been just on the PS3 rather than both consoles, it would have been a different story. Would have been less than half of that 3. KUDOS to Rockstar releasing their treasured GTA franchise onto the Xbox 360 and we highly appreciate that you have been offered a boost in your coffers to create EXCLUSIVE content for our little console that could. =)

And to give you an idea of my calculations, merely a guess of what Rockstar would have made if it was only on the Sony PS3 based on the 4:3 ratio? 4:3 ratio means that the 360 was selling 1.33 more units versus the PS3 version. With 390 million, that equates to 167 million dollars that the Sony PS3 would have sold for the first week, which means without the Xbox 360, it would have only sold just that...167 million dollars for week one versus the 360's 280 million for Halo 3. One console. Think my figures are wrong? Think again.

Take the 167 million and multiply it by 1.33 and you get the 222.11 million which totals closely to the 390 million Rockstar made. So, look at it how you like. Halo 3 is the highest grossing single console game week one figures. Pretty impressive stuff. GTA on the other hand has quite possibly the highest grossing income in its lifespan to date over any game out there. Merely a guess. I would be curious what the top 5 highest grossing games of all time. It very well could be Mario, if we look at the entire franchises. But a singular game (Super Mario Brothers 1 through whatever for example)and its sequals is what I would wonder about. Still impressive, but not Halo 3's numbers.

Um...no it didn't. Halo 3 sold $280 million AS A 360 EXCLUSIVE, during that same time period. It's like comparing apples to oranges. In a FAIR comparison, the 360 version of GTAIV didn't come CLOSE to Halo 3.

BTW, I didn't like Halo 2 OR 3...just pointing out facts. :o

I think that, If gta was a 360 or ps3 exclusive , it would has sold as much , maybe even more with still some people waiting on the sidelines , with their ps2 , wich console will get the best titles of '08 .

It being on two consoles dont multiply its possible sales , but rather divide it among two very competitive consoles

I was commenting at the whole comparison of GTA4 360 and Halo 3 ...
The sales as a whole of GTA got to be compared to halo , period . Its not suddenly a second and different entity on PS3 , its the same game ... and would probably have sold as much as it did on a single monopolizing console , than it did on both ps3 and 360 .
