DayZ Standalone Alpha: The Newbie Guide

Gaming Blend writes:

"The alpha test for the standalone version of DayZ can be a little intimidating at first. You're dropped on the beach with little equipment and not a single word of instruction. To help you get started, I've created a step-by-step instructional guide to the game based on my early experiences."

is this as good as everyone says?

I've always found the actual DayZ mod to be an unplayable mess.

It just so turns out that the actual standalone game doesn't feel too different.

Cernunnos2388d ago

The mod has been far from unplayable the past 6 months. Mods like DayZero are actually quite polished.

Bought it last night and it didnt live up to the expectations. Ran into a building while being chased by zombies. Really tight rooms and zombies goinf trhought walls.

It's alpha. It says there will be bugs all over the purchase page. Hell, before you start the game each time it gives you a warning message box you must click that reminds you it's alpha and has bugs.

Not going to lie and say I spent a whole lot of time with the alpha so far, but from what I played . . . it needs some work.
The game can be fun, but it is the definition of a slow burn and you most definitely need a friend or two willing to put in the time with you.
Performance, much like the mod, from what I hear, is certainly not where it should be.
I average between 30 - 50, rarely hitting over that for any real amount of time, with a GTX680 - a card that can max Last Light at a solid sixty, with high levels of AA.

It's fun.
Not sure if it's even worth buying into at the moment though, even if you are saving a fair bit on the release price and get to have a taste of the game now.

"it needs some work"

An unfinished game in Alpha needs some work? No way! I would have never guessed that.

It is a response to someone asking how the game is.
I know it is in alpha, but I am going to make people wary about buying into the game at this point.

Its boring at time, but when you get those "moments" they are the best I had in video games in the past 20 years. They make your blood rush and your hearth pound.

It is not polished as a Triple A game, but clearly a step up from the mod even if its in alpha stage. I would wait for the full release if you are of the fence but clearly check it out if you like survivor/large world game.

It feels like going back 18 months. They have added to the existing map and added a load of new enter able buildings yet loot is ridiculously scarce. I wandered through Cherno a few days ago and I saw one single zombie and no food. I think Rocket got a bit too wrapped up with the inventory system. The old ARMA2 one was useable, if a little clunky so to me it was a waste of time. I would have rather them spent the time on other features and bug fixes. I've heard from people involved in the mod that the zombies clipping through walls will likely never be fixed because it's such a deep issue within the game engine. It feels like we've gone backwards not forwards. Rocket could do with a few less climbing expeditions and more work on DayZ if it's going to come anywhere close to delivering on the potential it has. Too little too late.

Loot doesnt respawn yet, which is why you find so little of it. Fix for that is coming first week in January.
