Pawnshop business off despite downturn in economy

The way Kalp's business works, and that of many other pawnbroker/lenders, is that people in need of a quick, small infusion of cash will bring something of value into him, like a diamond ring or a PlayStation 3 video game machine. They will leave it with him, take what they need in a cash loan, then return and pay Kalp back, with 3 percent interest, a month or two later. They take the item they had left as collateral home with them.
