Is The Driving in GTA IV a bit too Hard?

As we play GTA IV we are having alot of fun but we keep crashing and sliding all over the place it seems like where not even going that fast. Maybe The game developers went to far with the realism a bit over the top.In Games the realer the better but You still gotta have fun. it seems like the game is in some type of drift mode you slide a little to much. but we really don't want to complain about a little thing like this because GTA IV....

It's really my only issue with the game. All be it, a very little issue. But some cars are so frustrating to drive, others are fine. The bikes are almost impossible to drive and not hit something and fly off. My other small issue is when you hang out with someone you usually have to pick them up at one spot and drop them off half way across the map. Thank god for taxis.

And some cars are even better to drive busted up. I found the copcar being way easier to drive when the right front wheel is busted! GREAT FUN!

this was a problem in the first hour or two though, I'm cruising through liberty city like butter now(even chases). Just save the high speeds for the strait aways and baby the analog stick, not hard to get used to.

I thought the camera was a bit wonky when I was first getting accustomed to the driving in GTA4. When I got used to the camera I found that the driving was pretty good. This isn't Gran Turismo, so of course there is room for improvement, but I have no complaints.

My only real issue with this game is the lack of [AUTO SLEEP MODE].
I fell asleep, then suddenly when I woke up, all my npc relations had GONE TO HELL! I had'nt saved for several missions and pigeons ago..

Crusing the streets is easy but in the middle of a lot of action cars bounce around a bit much. Its just a little too arcady for my liking.

I am real cold on GTAIV multiplayer and I don't see it toppling COD4 on-line for long if at all.

Some of the super fast sports cars are really hard to drive but some of the middle class cars have better handling but of course you sacrafice speed. I've gotten used to it now and it's still hard but tolerable. The helicopter on the other hand...

I like the driving... once you realize that you're not supposed to drive by slamming on the breaks when turning(no anti lock breaks on these vehicles so of course it will slide and continue to move) and drive like it's say... Forza 2 or Gran Turismo 5 P by easing on the breaks like you would in real life, you'll enjoy it more.

I agree with you and games4fun.

To me the driving is the most enjoyable feature of the new and improved GTAIV. It takes skill and the right choice in car for a job which adds tremendous depth to missions and online, where otherwise you could just drive anything burnout style.

For those with problems, give it time and patience and jump in a real car and realise you can't drive anywhere if you just put your foot to the floor (or pull the triggers fully).

Yeah, driving isn't that much harder than the GTA3 games, but walking and shooting is a nightmare sometimes! Niko runs around like an idiot. He moves super slowly, even when being shot at, often even when holding the run button. The cover controls don't work too well, and neither does cover itself. The only game where I think cover really works in the campaign is Gears of War, and that's because the enemy AI is smart enough not only to use cover right, but to move up on you, not just let you get free shots at them. The AI in GTA4 is incredibly stupid; I pistol snipe them in the head from only about 20 yards away and they don't shoot back.

And oftentimes when you tell Niko to move toward and against a wall he'll go the opposite direction. Lastly, the auto-aim still doesn't work too well, and I find it a lot easier just to turn it off (and get more headshots that way). Overall the on-foot shooting missions aren't much more fun than in the GTA3 games.

LOL it is a bit tricky at 1st... but is controllable if you really utilize not mashing the gas all the time... you do that you're bound for trouble, and if you do use a good combination of the handbrake and brake... basically you're drifting... once you master that you'll tear through the corners... and even if you hit something/someone... you can get back on track alot quicker... not the easiest thing to do but practice makes perfect...

FINALLY a game media source finally addressed one of the flaws of GTA4 and it's a BIG one if you ask me.

Driving most of the cars in the game is a pain in the ass. And don't even get me started about driving the SUV's and Motorcycles because they are literally impossible to driving without swerving all over the road. And yes, the cars do slide too much.... It's like driving on ice sometimes in the game.

And GTA4 did not deserve a 10/10 by all of those reviewers that gave it that, and that's the honest to god truth.

I haven't played GTA4 that long... I've only played about 4 or 5 missions and I've roamed around the city for about 3-4 hours, and I would give GTA4 a 8.5/10.

For me the graphics in GTA4 were a letdown and PS3 exclusives like Uncharted Drakes Fortune and GT5 Prologue have WAY better graphics.

But, it really doesn't mean that much to me anymore because I've been looking forward to Metal Gear Solid 4 more than GTA4 the entire year anyways.

For sharp turns at high speeds, I found it helpful to let go of the accelerator (right trigger), and tap the left trigger and the A button at the same time, for a split second. But yeah the driving is wild, and it does really feel different for each car.

Its new York, u b lucky if you can go 60 mph out here. You have to practice cornering around small blocks & less time complaining about how much you suck & wishing for a patch!
here is a tip before turning, swing the camera into the turn. Guide both analog stick to straight in out. U will see very smooth turns. Don't forget to pump brakes & gas! Of course it might be ur controller, u need the ps3 dualshock 3.
can't imagine how anybody can drive & acsess the mobile phone on the xbox?
anyhow, I'm really good at driving in tight spaces & drive-by's. I use the camera to look right at the corner of the sidewalk, brake, turn & gently hit gas, swing camera & wheel back to steering position. Simple.
set a private match for yourself & drive around in the neighborhoods like the south Bronx. That way you can get some confidence.

Also, getting jacked in the back in a shootout is not the end. To win when u are getting shot in your back close to medium range, just click r3 for a review look & then press L2 to lock on or aim automatically. I point this out because x-play Adam sessler said is was the one thing that sucked because you couldnt do anything about it. What a moron!!!

Needs more balance, the regular brake is worthless, the handbrake has no "in between" it's ether too little or too much. Just pick out cars your good with, and steal/drive only those, if you can't find one, well...

There is a bit of extra drift sometimes but overall the driving is fairly easy. After all the complaining about it, i was expecting the handling of the cars to be super hard (like say the first time you hop on a motorcycle) but it's really not that hard at all. It's better if you ease into the speed and before you have to turn to let go of the gas and let the car use it's momentum to turn while breaking a bit.

I think the secret is in tapping the hand brake and regular brake in alteration along with the gas, I haven't quite figured out exactly how to do it every time though.

It's certainly realistic for the most part. GTA4 definately took me a long time to get used to at first, but now it's all natural...save the driving.

This is a next gen game. It's not a completely realistic video game but it is a much needed improvement upon the older games in the series. I for one knew it wouldn't be perfect, but that's kind of what I expect in GTA games. There are a few graphical impurities sure, I didn't stand in line at the midnight release for 3 hours to examine the popin graphics, and the very few flaws in what I consider to be the most fun I've had in a while. I stood in that line because I wanted to learn a new city, watch a new story, and steal some cars that had next gen graphics...and I got exactly what I expected. It's not perfect, but in some deep down guilty fun way...it absolutely is.

I actually like the realism of the driving in the game and the fact that all the vehicles handle differently. It actually makes you select different vehicles for what you are doing. When i started the game i was slightly put off by the driving but an hour of practice solved that :-)

the reason I don't like the realism in the driving is bacause I was always a fan of doing bike tricks and stuff. In vice city there was certain ways to hit a tree that would launch you into 15ish backflips etc.

I can't believe how many people here are calling the driving realistic. It is so far from it and that would be fine if it was actually good. You can not turn the car at all when braking. That's realistic? Next time you're out driving in the real world, think about what you're doing and think about what you do in GTA 4. It's not even close. You do brake while making turns in a real car. If I don't slow down to what looks like 10 mph before any turn, I'm on the far sidewalk slamming into a light post and some people. If driving was that hard in real life, my car would be totaled and I'd be in jail for manslaughter.

Favourite mode of transport in the stats screen is motorbike. If bikes had been removed I wouldn't have bothered with the game I like them THAT much. NRG900 with the non standard front faring is my ride of choice.

I've got no issues with the cars in the game but then again I'm not a massive driving game fan. I haven't really had a major issue with any of the automobiles in the game they slide lots but I figure I just need to work harder to be able to control them. Only times I've had major problems is when I've been T-boned but that's gonna screw you up anyway.

I admit at first it was so hard to drive but now I've found it so much easier with pratice. Also, I find the controls a bit confusing at first lol, I thought that it was the A button to accelrate so I carjacked someone and then kept on pressing A, lets just say the person carjacked me and then beat me up.

Remember people, triggers to drive those cars.

I Switched the controls to classic mode, much
easier then the new mode.

I drive in first person bonnet view, It handles really well, press select to change your view and dont forget to press square twice to get full beam lights on when it gets in dark areas....

The driving is perfect. Previous GTA games were ruined due to cartoon handling cars. Now it's put straight. I love the real-life physics to this game. It all feels so alive. I have no problems leaping into a variety of different vehicles with a wanted level of 4 and still escaping in the pouring rain.

If you can't drive the cars without crashing them all over the place, maybe the skill level of the game is beyond you. Or maybe you've not found the handbrake yet. Lol.

yo im a good driver, seriously, all i get is complements when someone is in the car. so i think i got the driving skills here. drifting around turns and sh*t. its all about the the button combo. and i found the secrete! psn StreetVeteran

Every car drives differently!! Unlike previous GTA titles where you can bust a sharp turn going 100mph while holding the hand-brake.

In this one, you have to treat it as if your really drive, you can hit turns at certain speeds, you have to slow down, be easy on the hand-brake. Much more realistic, I like.

at first it was but now its breeze........ i use the hand break as well for turns. it really helps :)

I remember on GTA III driving with the ambulance, taking all patients to hospital without breaking. Sure, the driving was not realistic, but it was precise and fun as hell.

Now, pursuits are really nightmares because at each turn, you slide like a soap. Ride a bike and see how sensitive it is. If you push the right trigger down, the bike will be confused, you have to go very slow with it...

Left trigger's break does not allow you to make good drift, and handbrake make the car even more sliding. GTA IV is a great game, but at each mission i pray for not having pursuits.

The driving is perfect! The only thing I don't like about the game is the messed up animation of Niko running down the stairs. Why does he look so gimped??
