Sour grapes from Sony over Xbox 360 digital downloads

Sony have responded bitterly to Microsoft's TV and movie download service which is due to launch on November 22nd.

It's no surprise that Sony are slightly peeved at the fact that the new digital download service will launch just 5 days after the PS3 hits shelves in the US, and as if that wasn't enough, Microsoft are also releasing one of the most anticipated games of the year, Gears Of War, on the PS3 launch date of November 17th, and have cheekily named the day as 'Emergence Day' in a blatant attempt to take some of the shine of Sony's big day.

Sony took the opportunity to have a dig at Microsoft's new service by saying, "PlayStation 3's content is designed for everyone to enjoy right out of the box, no matter which configuration you purchase.We would never shut anyone out of the entertainment experience because they didn't have the money to buy the top of the line system..."

The console war is heating up and there's no doubt that we can expect some harsh words flying back and forth over the coming weeks.

Jesus, Microsoft only announced this less than a day ago, and Sony have already stuck their foot in their mouth in response.

Seriously Sony, would it kill you to spend a little time thinking about things before you make a press release? Even running it through a spell checker would make a difference. The paper clip would tell you "I noticed you're trying to piss the gaming world off. Would you like a template?", and that would make an early warning.

Two things:

1. Britain DOESN'T HAVE THE 20GB MODEL! So yes, we are shut out of the playstation "entertainment experience" if we can't afford £425.

2. They're saying the core system shuts you out of the premium entertainment experience if you can't afford it, when let's not forget, if you can afford the 20GB playstation then YOU CAN AFFORD THE PREMIUM 360. It's simple logic, so they just shot themselves in the foot.

1.) This has been known/rumored for well over a year now, along with the partnership with Direct TV. MS isn't "desperate"...they'v e been planning numerous add-ons to the functionality of LIVE/Marketplace from DAY ONE.

2.) Whoever wrote the article is a bit clueless as well; "Emergence Day" IS NOT a "blatant attempt to take some of the shine off Sony's big day". The game itself was strategically released to do so, but the catchphase "Emergence Day" is directly related to the game...as The Locust Horde "emerges" from Sera's core.

3.) MS has much more up their sleeves...this is just the first major announcement, leading up to the Holidays. ;)

since February. If you look at the sales figures starting from the launch of the PS2 and the launch of the 360, the PS2 sold a LOT faster (and with shortages). The information is available on places like VGcharts, which retains accurate information on all consoles.
http://nexgenwars.com/ also keeps track of how many next-gen consoles have been sold, and based on the official announcements released by Microsoft this site is amazingly accurate. It literally hit 6 million sold for the 360 at the very end of september.

Yes, it's cheaper, but it's also been available for 6 years and yet it still manages to outsell a next-gen console. That's pretty damn impressive.

PS2 didn't sell as fast as the 360. Ps2 is only selling more per month in USA due to the fact that 360 is focused on MANY regions and not just the USA. The ps2 Launched in early 2000 in Japan and then late 2000 in USA. The first 10 months on the market the ps2 only sold 3 to 4 million compared to the 360 selling 6 million in that same time period. And if the 360 sells 10 million by the end of the year. It will totally crush what the ps2 did in the same time period from its initial launch. Get it? Got it? Good.

Next Gen wars isn't accurate its speculative. But regardless....the only true facts on console sales comes from the NPD or Microsoft's financial statements. When MS announced 6 million in September...they also restated that the 360 is right on par for selling 10 million by the end of the year. And with the 10's and mid to high 9's GOW is getting....That will be an easy mark to get to with Christmas on the horizon. November and December are always the biggest months for consoles and games. Too bad Ps3 can't take advantage of it. Sony could have sold 480k at any time in the year. This is the second Christmas they have missed out on. WOW. Thanks Microsoft.

Ok so, right, PS2 launched earlier in japan. Still, launch in march 00, so just add 11 months... feb 01.
The numbers ? 3.7M
So let's do the math, genius, 4.4+3.7 = 8.1M consoles sold for PS2's first 11 months, NOT EVEN COUNTING EUROPE.
How the hell can you compare worldwide numbers for x360, and northen america numbers for PS2, lmfao.

Not sure on this, but is the 360 hdd still "required" for content dloads?... I saw a post somewhere that now (post-dashboard upgrade) you can select where you want to save to... so if you're networked you shouldn't even need the hdd on the 360 at all.... technically.

We're going to need faster broadband before we start reliably downloading HD movies. Yeah, you can argue that we already do that through cable boxes with HBOHD and SHOHD, but those aren't the same as what we get with BluRay and HDDVD... not even close.

Also, what is this MS service going to cost initially? I'd download stuff like the last Office episode, since I missed it, but when it comes to movies, I'll continue to use Netflix unless MS is cheaper. I have a Netflix distribution site 15 miles away, and get my movies next day. I get about 20 movies a month for $19. Beat that MS and I'll start using Live more. Speaking of which, I think my 1yr subscription is going to expire next month. :(

I think the speed of broadband we have is fast enough. I mean I'm using a 6 meg service right now, my provider is launching an 18 meg service soon, so I don't see that being an issue.

However MS will need more bandwidth to allow people to DL movies a lot quicker, as the current XBL is not fast enough to make this a seamless experience. and I think they talked about that issue, I am excited at the possibilities of this though, it will be interesting to see how it lpays out in the next year:)

We already have faster broadband? Yeah, sure. When's the last time you downloaded a 10+ GB file just to watch a movie for 2 hours? Even at 100% speed with an 18Mbps connection, it would still take you almost 2 hours... at 100% speed. We all know we won't get anywhere near 100% speed. Shoot, my experience with XBL is that I'm only using a 2400 baud modem on my 8Mbps connection (very slight exaggeration).

Soon owners of the X360 Premium will soon have to go out and buy a very expensive harddrive expansion, just to store their content. And so far it looks like you can't redownload already bought TV shows, making it practically a renting service, as there will only be room for 4-5 hours of HD content on the Premium models 20GB harddrive -- and that is exclusive game demos. Imagine what a 60GB drive will cost for X360, when a 20GB costs $100...

The TV store was expected, just not quite so soon. But for now it is US only... Sony will have their own music and moviestore in due time, although obviously with a lot more exclusive content (they do own the rights for most of it themselves)...

Good on X360 US owners... Enjoy your choice of six old movies for the rest of the year...

If you have the wrong version of the Xbox 360, you won't be able to experience these great services (unless you spend a lot of money upgrading the system). It's a good thing Sony made sure both PS3 SKUs have the same capabilities and functionality. Hopefully Sony ends up offering something like this though because having video on demand is a great idea.

And if you get the 20gb PS3 you will be stuck in the same boat with the small hard drive. I personally, would love to download CSI in hi-def or movies for that matter, helll with expensive gas a trip to the movie rental place and back with a rental purchase will run you more than $6.

NOTE: If you can't afford a premium 360, you probably can't afford to download movies either, much less have a fast internet connection. Sure you get kind of riped off if you update the core version, but if you don't have th money you can buy one accessory at a time.

Okami is just one of many I've seen coming since I bought the PS2. Was that a delayed game? That happends all the time. Very common. When 2009 hits I have been given a lot of games to my taste and like. The FPS label the XB has is warranted. The XB camp do pay attention this gen around to different genres. Good.
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, and some more to reiterate some of what you stated above. I count Oblivion actually to a rpg FPS. Funny isnt it? *S*

You cant expect me to rambling every freaking game here to make a case will you? But as I said, take a good look and say the PS2/3 has no/will never have any greater game libraries.
Kameo is too short a game. Good game though.
I have yet to see enough good quality games comming to the xb360 that's for sure - 'cause the quality and assurance process sucks big time of those games I've seen on the xb360 (oblivion Enchant Arm and Kameo) and heard of (saints row). The whole experience has made me not considering buying this console for a considerable time. And we have to see how the PS3 plays out in the long run, I know.

Sony dont have that advantage as last gen. Which I feel is healthy. But MS really have to pay attention to quality and reliability in a greater magnitude or I will never look at the console in the future. When comparing to Sony PS2, the games I've bought really was tested thuroughly, coz I have rarely had any complains what so ever during it's lifetime (Norath and 2 NHL games).

The Cell and BLue-Ray are the only major differences of the consoles, everything else sony states is alot of BS up to now. I don't care so much about this new feature that the 360 now has since I brought the damn thing to play video games, and everything else is just extra.

Do you really think that me a 15 year old will be buying the PS3 at launch, oh wait its not coming out until 2007 in Europe. Your math is all wrong buddy. The 360 sold 6 million by september. So its not 11 months on the market. ha ha ha ha. You have to compare 10 months to 10 months. When you do that. you can clearly see that the 360 sold much more than the ps2 did from its launch to the 10 month mark. Nice try though. And right now, the 360 is right on track to sell 10 million by the end of the year. We don't know how many 360's sold in October or November yet. But we know November and December are ALWAYS the biggest months for games and consoles. Its ok. Whats the problem buddy. MS is taking gaming to places we have never seen before. P.S. You are adding two different launches that span over a 10 month period. Sony launched in Japan first. So you add up Japans sales from March to December 2000. Then you factor in October to December sales for the USA launch. Thats the whole 10 months from initial launch. You added two 11 month launches that happened at two different times. ha ha ha ha ha...Did you actually think anyone would fall for that? You only do 10 months ONE time. Not 11 months twice buddy. Ok then, let's assume they sell 10M by the end of december, that's 14 months. Ho, let's say 13 if ya want.

WOW almost 14M, not even counting Europe.

P.S : you have to be fair. You're speaking of a 10 months from launch window. So yeah, take the numbers for all territories with a 10 months window right ? What do you want, to count 10 months from the japan launch ? It wasn't release in other territories, so that's not a fair comparison. If you wanna know which console sold best within 10 month, you have to consider 10 months in all territories, period.

Its almost like Sony fanboys are mad and know that they have lost! The 360 has the better AAA games, the better online, its selling like crazy. Yes the PS2 is still selling alot, but most might be replacements and you can also buy a huge library of brand new games for roughly 5-10 dollers each! AND I JUST LOVE reading sony fanboys talk about how boring GOW is, it's not all that, hahaha, you guys are funny. I guess a fanboy has to hate EVERY GAME on the other system no matter how good it is. Why do people keep comparing the 360 sales to the ps2? Isnt the ps2 last gen? Didnt the ps2 compete directly with the xbox? xbox did well but lost in sales numbers? isnt the 360 like $400 and the ps2 like $100? I dont see how the two can be compared then in sales figures at all. Shouldnt the 360 be compared in all aspects with the PS3 and the original xbox in all aspects of the ps2?

This is the reason the PS2 sells well and continues to sell well.
1.) It has a library of over 5000 game titles and more continue to come out.
2.) The price is cheaper than the 360, Wii and PS3. It’s at a price level where most consumers can buy it.
3.) You can get used games for 3 to 5 bucks.

PS2’s biggest success was due to the amount of games it had, price and brand name. The PS2 has a library of over 5000 games, where the next closest which is the Xbox ranked in with over 500 games and the Gamecube coming in with around 200 games. No one that plays games can deny that the more games a console has that you like the more likely you are to buy it. If you look at the PS2 library it had such a broad and vast library that they had games for just about every gamer type. The funny thing is the Xbox and Dreamcast no doubt were much more powerful machines over the PS2. However it goes to show Software titles count for a whole lot. Next big thing is exclusives. We all know if we wait 2 months after a game has come out you can get a good deal on the game used, but most of us love to buy the games new and be the first to play. The reason exclusives are important, gives bragging rights PS2 had some of the best and most popular exclusives.

Notice when it sold well it was during NOV, DEC which is expected.
Notice that outside of that sales didn’t pick up again till May 2002 which was based on a price drop. Then a price drop in June 2004, increasing sells. The point to be made here is to show how, with a lower price more people start to buy the system.

With all the facts you can see why the PS2 has been out sold the 360 and why it will out sale the PS3. However given all the other facts it presents a good argument as to why the 360 and Wii stand a good chance of taking the crown from the Sony.
