Sonic 2's Hidden Palace Zone: Worth the Wait?

Hardcore Gamer: For many Sonic fans, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the pinnacle of the franchise. The game has been re-released several times since its debut on the Sega Genesis in 1992, but none of those iterations have officially included the Hidden Palace Zone until now. Christian Whitehead and his teammates at Sonic Retro have revived the forgotten stage for the remastered mobile release. Originally created to display Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic, Hidden Palace Zone was scrapped after the decision was made to grant players the ability directly after obtaining all seven chaos emeralds. Although corrupted fragments of the stage can be found on the original cartridge through game enhancement, this marks the first time the level has appeared in its completed form. The question is, is it any good?

That seemed like a better way to include Super Sonic, least then it gave you a reason to collect all the Chaos Emeralds...

What I'm not liking is the fact it's been done for Mobile...why.

Everytime something like this happens whether it's an enhanced version of a game, once forgetten content or maybe extra stuff gamers have been wanting for years they add it in mobile versions

It's like a slap to the face to fans at the end of the day

ChaosKnight3780d ago

What other avenues do they have to release it? PSN or XBLA, I suppose?

SpiralTear3780d ago

That would make more sense. A lot of the fans of Sonic 2 play the dedicated gaming systems more than mobile. It could've been released as free DLC on PSN, XBLA or eShop. The fact that this is exclusive to mobile devices is what especially puzzles me.

Plus, I was never a fan of the pseudo-buttons on smartphones. You know, the overlays on the touch-screens that aren't real buttons. They're awkward to use. I'd rather a platformer level be released on a system with actual tactile feedback.

Why must everything be an insult and a crime? I've bought Sonic 2 at least 3 times and I don't think look at it as an insult.

The thing is, there is no "best" way to give out this content without it costing way more than it is worth.

They could rerelease it on the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo, though original buyers would feel slighted.
They could have tossed it in Lost Worlds (would have been a great tribute given the name), but people that don't own a Wii U (or 3DS assuming it could be implemented) would be angry. Also, some people that just want to play the game would be irked at them doing it that way.
They could have never released the content, but do you think this crime is such an injustice that everyone should be punished because -Foxtrot on N4G would feel insulted?
They could give it to every buyer for free, but it would be hard to determine who actually bought it. They could also give it to everyone for free, but then fans might feel irked that people are getting rewarded for doing nothing.

They really can't win, so I'll take an upgraded version on any platform to no update ever.

Well its not a total slap to the face im happy that its now accessible in some form but I can totally see where your getting at especially about the puzzling move to have it only on mobile.

15 Sega Genesis Games that Hold Up Today

The Sega Genesis is a tad underappreciated. This site has already posted about how this console was great for the RPG genre despite the SNES getting more glory. However, that was not the only genre that flourished on the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Shining Force is on my long list of game series should be revived. Same with console Phantasy Star

Fonsecap864d ago

Shining Force 1, 2 and 3 were awesome, the third one can only be played with emulation along with the translation project because of Episode 2 and 3 that were only released in JP. But I agree, I don't know why SEGA don't revive this franchise, tactics games are very well accepted these days.

Jiub864d ago

I didn't know that about the third one. After the success of the last Fire Emblem, I can't imagine why we don't get more tactics RPGs out there. I'd even take a tactics ogre at this point

YES
i love shining force. i need a bundle with all the games in it.

but the mobile game is coming soon anyways :)

Petebloodyonion863d ago

I'm sorry but I feel the list has been made by a person checking his own backlog catalog.
Mortal Kombat 2? missing half of the sounds and animation from the arcade.
And can we say Super dark soul difficulty when we say Earthworm Jim 2

Here's my pick for still holding up and fun

- Shinobi Shadow Dancer, not too tough nor too easy with a good arcade challenge 1 hour long to complete.
- Gunstar Heroes
- Nhl 94
- Thunder Force 3

Shuckylad863d ago

The 16 bit era in general has aged better than any pre hd generation imo.

Fist4achin863d ago

Great lost with lots of memories. A reboot of the Shadowrun game and Shining Force would keep me entertained and busy for a long time.

gold_drake863d ago

-Soleil
-Sonic 2, 3 and knuckles, pinball
-that one x-men game i always forget its name
-that one fighting game that has different characters (a fishmen, an assassin lady, a private detective from the 70s etc)
-shining force 2
-dynamite heady (probably the best looking genesis game, imo)
-wonderboy in monster world

those are the ones that come to mind ha.

Yui_Suzumiya863d ago

Sega CD version is so much better though.. I had both versions back in the 90's

gold_drake862d ago

oh yeh, thats the name. i always forget it haha.
