Killzone: Shadow Fall Is All Filler, No Killer... And It's All Our Fault

Dealspwn ask why the industry seems so obsessed with game length, and why it's leading us down a path of mediocrity.

guerilla needs to work on a different game. killzone series is so so.

Riderz13374216d ago

They are making a new IP with the writer of Fallout New Vegas behind the project. I think it was rumoured to be an open world RPG or something.

jc485734216d ago

I really hope Guerilla find its "killer" title just like Sucker Punch did with Infamous and ND with their games in general.

CGI-Quality4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

I agree that inFAMOUS is good for Sucker Punch, but I don't get how you pedestal it and slight Killzone when the latter is the bigger franchise.

@ Curtis: How, exactly? Killzone is the bigger seller. inFAMOUS also hasn't been tested across three generations.

curtis924216d ago

Infamous wins in that battle.

Riderz13374216d ago

Sorry Curtis but Killzone is the bigger franchise whether you like it or not. I personally prefer inFAMOUS more than Killzone.

Killzone series has more than 8M units sold, and I expect Shadow Fall to be the best selling in the series.

inFAMOUS series has 4.25M sales and I expect Second Son to sell close to 4M alone, as long as it lives up to the hype. Going to be buying a PS4 just for Second Son =)

C-H-E-F4216d ago

I prefer Killzone over Infamous so does a lot of others looking at the sales numbers. Don't get me wrong I love Infamous but Killzone is my bread and butter. And this is coming from a fellow Socomer smh...

curtis924216d ago

@CGI my bad, thought you said better not bigger. I agree then.

It used to be awesome, KZ2 online was brilliant. Then people started complaining that the controls felt too heavy i.e. not like COD/Halo. GG folded and implemented the 'gun strapped to shopping cart' feel that COD has. It's been all downhill since then. Actually, KS Mercenary on Vita controls similar to KZ2 and it feels much better.

Prime1574216d ago

" I'll say it again: a game's length is irrelevant on its own. What does "a 12 hour campaign" mean? Does it take replayability into account? Does it take difficulty levels and player skill into account? What about collectibles and curios? But most of all, nothing in that short little phrase indicates anything regarding how good the game might be. Yet we put an enormous amount of stock in that. It's ridiculous, and it's got to stop."

That quote is very close to me... COD being ~4 hours long?! MP was similar but the scores aren't?!

In my opinion, we need to start looking at games in terms of budget AND THEN rating them! Contrast is great, but a 6?! Compared to what?! Indies ARE different, and Aliens: CM is my best example of AAA...

lokirevamped4216d ago

+1

To be honest with you, you can add New game + to a 6 hour game and I would be fine with that. It doesn't matter if a game is 6 hours long, if I'm not enjoying the first 30 minutes to an hour, I will not play it anymore...back to GameStop but, if I complete the game it must of had a nice story and New game + would add much more fun.

If there's no reason to prolong your game then for the love of god don't. With games like Persona or Ni No Kuni when you think your done and the credits should start rolling boom plot twist another 30 hours and that's a good thing.A pleasant surprise. But when you know a game should be done but they add filler to prolong it then obviously something is wrong with their script.

R6ex4216d ago

Filler or plot twist, I'll only buy games with >10 hrs of storyline (for my hard-earned $60). Though I love Shooters, I refuse to waste my money on short campaigns found in BF4 & COD:Ghost.

itBourne4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

You are part of the problem then lol. You would rather have quantity then quality. Also, using BF4 and CoD Ghost as an argument from a campaign perspective is kind of pointless, because that is not quality or quantity.

lokirevamped4216d ago

I can honestly say that I have many COD and BattleField games in-which I have never played the campaign, I go straight to hardcore team deathmatch or other modes. I don't need a written story on any FPS I purchase, the only story I need is, I'm on my team and the other team are our enemies, end of story I need to know.

joab7774216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

Its a launch title and Sony has always used the Killzone series to serve a purpose. This did it. To be honest...they would have been better served working on God of War 4 instead of Ascension and holding off Killzone for a time other than November. Everyone is sick of 6 hr campaigns and many r playing CoD and B4. Its unfortunate too b/c they did try some different things here with a little more freedom and a more personal story. Until they offer a more open world with customization and choice...it will just be the same result. The multi has always been one of my favorites and this one is great too. Most ppl don't have the patience for classes and working together and the ones that do r playing B4. Onve again Sony gives them the worst chance to succeed. I was so damn hopeful with K2 and the helghast r my favorite video game antagonists. I just don't know why it is continually put in a bad position. Atleast it was marketed this time...lol!

I do think we r seeing the end of traditional sp though. Titanfall will launch without one. Destiny will b all online. I really think Bad Company or a Battlefield sp in BC template could work great on next gen. Only time will tell but I think we see a move towards a melding.

CGI-Quality4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

Thankfully, Killzone's campaign isn't just 6 hrs - so there's that. Also, as many, if not more, people are online playing it (a little research would provide you such info) over either Battlefield or Call of Duty on the PS4.

We can talk about fillers/faults/complaints when Killzone: ShadowFall fails the sales charts. As of right now, it did exactly what it set out to do and could, potentially, be the biggest release the series has ever seen.

@ Lovable: Good thing many people don't think like you, or this would be a very stale industry.

Lovable4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

Put a mediocre first party shooter there and it will still get a lot of sale. People bought the PS4 cause of the PS4, KZSF is there only for the free ride...

The whole franchise was a sham...Sony should just drop this pos of a franchise and let it rot.

Riderz13374216d ago

@loveable - Killzone is there for a free ride? That's the most expensive "free" ride I've ever seen.

People paid 60$ for the game on launch day, you expect people to pay 60$ for a mediocre FPS? Lmao please think before you speak.

Killzone has a dedicated fanbase on the PlayStation consoles, whereas BF4 is mostly PC based and CoD is multiplatform so the player count spreads across all consoles/PC.

mxrider21994216d ago

@lovable mediocre? obviously you are either a CoD fanboy or havnt even played the game

CrustifiedDibbs4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

"Also, as many, if not more, people are online playing it (a little research would provide you such info) over either Battlefield or Call of Duty on the PS4."

this is so false. a little research would tell you that kz has less than 2000 people online, and cod has 30,000. doesnt seem like anyone is doing what you are suggesting. seems like sony fanboys are more interested in talking about kz than actually playing it. this happens with every killzone, and its a shame.

CGI-Quality4216d ago

@ Crustified: Show me a figure proving that numerical discrepancy. The real "shame" is from people that claim to know something about a game they don't play.

CrustifiedDibbs4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

all you have to do is go online in both games. the active player count is available for every gametype... actually killzone gives you the active players from the ps4 dash. what more proof do you need? if you have a ps4 and both games, check for yourself. im not making this up.

you response is pretty typical though. you can go right to my profile and see that i own a ps4, and play kz. i have my gamertag right there.

i enjoy kz, and i have since kz2. every game has been hyped to the highest by sony fanboys, only to have a pretty small online community that fizzles pretty quickly. its a shame to me that a good game doesnt get the love it should.

CGI-Quality4216d ago

I have Battlefield, Ghosts, and Killzone all on PS4. I have found more people playing the latter. So let's not write something off as "typical" (although it is typical to call someone a Sony fanboy for discussing a game in a positive light while you do something different). But hey, whatever floats your narrow-minded boat.

CrustifiedDibbs4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

your denial is amazing. lol

i was off on cod active players, only 18,796 online right now. last night there were around 30,000 though.

https://twitter.com/adam230...

killzone, i over shot by a couple hundred.

https://twitter.com/adam230...

even though i was off on cod, its still a huge difference, and shows that you were wrong (and possibly just a liar). now that you have proof, what else will you attempt to call me out on?

just for fun ill send you a vid of me playing kz2.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

im not sure what else to do to get you out of this denial. if this doesnt work, im afraid you are just a lost cause.

i just went to your ps4 profile, and it seems that you havent even played cod or bf4 lol. not only that, but you havent even played every map in kz. you also have no recent ps4 activity. do YOU even have a ps4? seems that you are a liar after all, and you fit right in with the rest of the sony fanboys... just a lot of talk.

hulk_bash19874216d ago

Same here buddy and multiplayer is a blast, don't understand all the hate.

CGI-Quality4216d ago

It generally gets "hate" from very partisan people. Others, with open minds, have either tried it and found out it wasn't for them, bought it and love it, or tried it and loved it. The rest are like Lovable above - talk trash and probably haven't played it to begin with.

Riderz13374216d ago

I haven't played the game myself but I'm definitely seeing comments that people love the multiplayer, better than KZ3. Also it seems Guerilla is paying so much more attention to the community.

Free maps, ability to make your own game mode, weapons unlocked so no grinding to level whatever just to unlock a weapon.

Also, Eric is back (Lead on KZ2 multiplayer) so I expected good things =P

LOGICWINS4216d ago

I'm buying it either this week or next week. I want to form my own opinion on this game.

TheBrownBandito4216d ago

Other than some slightly cliché script writing at times, this is a great game. The absence of auto aim makes the firefights more satisfying too. And it really does look incredible.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

mxrider21994216d ago

its bad ass i already almost have 5 days played on the MP and i have never played a game this much b4

hellzsupernova4216d ago

I have enjoyed the campaign allot more than bf4. However Assassins creed 4 has stolen all of my life

wishingW3L4216d ago

BF4's campaign is one of the worst things I have ever played in my life. The MP on the other hand couldn't be more epic!

Ashby_JC4216d ago

I started the bf4 campaign then stopped not to far into it. I don't know if I could do better with it if it was in my hands to create a great sp.

I mainly got the game for mp myself.

As for the article. I agree that we shouldn't want games that add filler and pad it to extend the length.

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT233d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus233d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius233d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro241d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken240d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown241d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72241d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken240d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya240d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast241d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood241d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer584d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138584d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga583d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

583d ago
Notellin583d ago (Edited 583d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem583d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos583d ago (Edited 583d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor583d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies583d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim582d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese583d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto583d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

GoodGuy09584d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic583d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld583d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie583d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77583d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231582d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein583d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

P_Bomb583d ago

It’s been a decade? Now I’m sad.

LiViNgLeGaCY582d ago

I hear ya bud. We're due for a revival.
