Battlefield 4 Review (PS4) - Pew, Pew, Pew - Twinfinite

Devoun from Twinfinite writes - "My Battlefield 4 issues started in, but were not isolated to, the campaign. Several different times my game crashed to the already infamous PlayStation 4 blue error screen. No big deal, right? Just restart the game and continue shooting baddies on your quest to stop China from invading America. Wrong. Two of the three times I encountered the crash screen on PS4 my data was corrupted. As of right now I have played through the first few missions of Battlefield 4 three times, and I more than likely will not return to the game due to these technical issues, but I can give you an opinion on what I have played so far." (1/5)

The multiplayer is pretty unable atm - at least for me. (On both systems)

But that's no justification - BF4 is awesome

crxss4159d ago

people don't play battlefield for the single player, if the MP is unplayable then yes it deserves a 1/5

monochromer4160d ago

Yeah, I just laughed and moved on.

LonChaneyTV4160d ago

Still looks beautiful in Ultra settings.

dannphou4160d ago

I'm not liking this review...

MattyG4160d ago

Did you read it, or just look at the number? Because the reason he gives is pretty spot on. The game shipped as a near unplayable mess and it still pretty much is. I can't play more than 3 or 4 matches without the game crashing one me, and until a week ago I couldn't play the single player without a corrupted save file. It's an entirely justified review if you look beyond the number.

dannphou4160d ago

I guess I spoke TOO early... I've never experience these problems... Sorry...

admiralvic4160d ago

It might be "fair" in its current state, but an article explaining the current situation would have gone further and been more professional than a review giving it a 1/5. Especially since they need to either retract the review when the game gets fixed (unlike a lot of games, I think we can all agree that EA won't let Battlefield 4 remain "unplayable" for all forever) or leave it as a 1/5 forever.

spaceg0st4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

I know some people are having a very difficult time playing, but my copy hasn't been that bad. I've leveled up to rank 75 with maybe a crash every day or two.

"Especially since they need to either retract the review when the game gets fixed (unlike a lot of games,"

This is why games ship in the broken condition they do. Gamers are quick to line up and hand out $60 for broken games.

I appreciate this review because it is not subjective. The game is objectively broken. That is not an opinion. It shipped broken so it should receives scores that reflect that...

TotalSynthesisX4160d ago

Three or four matches? Count yourself lucky. It's a rarity that I can finish one.

Giving us a week of double XP in a game that's almost unplayable... What a joke. "Here you go! Too bad you can't finish a match to get the bonus XP! huehuehuehuehuehue"

thecastroregime4159d ago

@admiralvic: I don't think there's any need for the review to be revisited once it gets fixed. Courteous, yes, but by no means necessary. Having any sort of obligation to revisit the game after EA decides to take its sweet time with it is doing little else but playing into their hands. Developers and publishers may create the games, but it's the fans that give them any and all power they may have in the first place. If we baby them along and tell them it's okay, well, we're certainly not doing ourselves any favors and can be sure to see more releases like this in the future. After all, why bother with quality control when the fans can figure out the problems themselves and make it easier for them to zero in on the issues and repair them?

Do I agree that the game will likely be fixed and move up to a state where it will be something better than a 1/5? Absolutely. But in terms of revisiting the review, well, a comparison: teachers and professors barely let students resubmit assignments, figuratively speaking, I don't see why this ought to be treated any differently. If we're talking about a lack of professionalism on the part of the site, then we should also be talking about a lack of professionalism on such an enormous company who is quite clearly taking advantage of its customers.

I think many people here are disagreeing with the score. And I think that's flawed because it's placing way too much importance on the numbered rating itself and not giving due respect to the actual review, the qualitative aspect of it. I doubt very many people will disagree with the objectivity in this review about the game constantly glitching and crashing and corrupting. I don't see how those kinds of observations or obstacles are in any way subjective. Reading through the comments here, there's more support for what this review is saying than against it. At varying degrees, of course, but supportive nevertheless.

AlexanderNevermind4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

It was broke for the 1st week and a 1/2 but now its working fine. I mean it was broke to the point I could not play a game without it crashing within seconds of starting.

While I agree they put out a broken product, they seem to have righted the ship and probably deserve a better rating.

But the reviewer says he's doubtful to return to the game so.....

dethpuck4160d ago

The game is a mess. Sorry I had bf3 at launch and it had done quirks. But this mess is outright unplayable. I love battlefield and logged almost 300 hours on 3 and 4s bugs ruin a great experience. As soon as I get into the battlefield goodness crash

AlexanderNevermind4160d ago

@dethpuck

Well a new patch hits tomorrow so hopfully things get better. When working the game kicks ass. I played about 3/4 hrs. For the record I did crash once this evening.

JMaine5184160d ago

I've had 0 problems with this game or playing online but I can only speak for myself. That sucks for you other guys.

SaffronCurse4160d ago

Constant lag, sound being cut off and often times during midgame the came crashes. Unacceptable to release the game in such a state.

BoneMagnus4160d ago

Interesting about the sound - I was playing through some Bose headphones plugged into the controller; I thought that was the reason sound was cutting out.

Tru_Ray4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

I beat the campaign last night. The game would crash occasionally, but it was only during transitions from one stage to the next. Fortunately, I didn't have to replay any sections.

I don't know if I can take this review seriously, given that the reviewer, by his own admission, did not complete the game.

This review is broken.

Tru

MikeEaton4160d ago

@Tru -- He didn't finish it because it was so busted that he couldn't.

Gridloc4160d ago

Didn't EA even try to make it seem like it was Sonys fault that the game didn't work right, then retracted their statement. I still can't figure out why EA has been voted the worst company two years in a row/s...

Sarcasm4160d ago

It does suck, it's crashed twice on me, and the hit detection is frickin off. Good thing I got it for only $20 on the PC. Otherwise I'd be pretty upset too.

HammadTheBeast4160d ago

This is a proper review. When a game is unplayable, only then should it get a score this low. Maybe the author can update it once it's playable.

MikeEaton4160d ago

Updates may come if the game is fixed, but the score will stand. EA made the choice to release a game that was broken so they will need to live with the score they were given.

Chuk54160d ago

Unfortunate that you're having those issues. Thus far, I haven't anything that bad, just regular online temporary hiccups. But loving it so far, one of the first "my old console would melt under this game's scale" of the next-gen.

Battlefield 1, Hardline, BF4 Servers Are Being Taken Offline by Cheaters; EA Silent on Issue

Cheaters & hackers have been causing grief on Battlefield 1, Hardline & BF4 servers, with nonstop DDoS attacks among other things. Unfortunately, EA has remained silent about it.

-Foxtrot1122d ago

Course they are silent, they are hoping people flock to 2042

gamesftw2501121d ago

Maybe it was a inside job then haha.

jeromeface1120d ago

wouldnt be the first time, titanfall 1+2 anyone?

PapaBop1121d ago

Not even if they paid me.. EA always do this with old games with less money potential, if this was Ultimate Team, they'd address and sort it faster than stories could spread. Why invest time in their products when they will just dump it in the following years? Then again EA never could see the forest for the trees.

Inverno1121d ago

I imagine after those games were given out for free a couple months back through Amazon, anything that makes people go to 2042 is a plus for them

XiNatsuDragnel1122d ago

They want people to go on 2042. My theory

excaliburps1121d ago

Nah. I think they can't do anything about it or they want to sink money into fixing it.

Pudge1028881121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

EA owns all BF servers so yes, they can do something about it but they refuse to because they dont want ppl playing their old games instead of the new one. Its EA we’re talking about here

pr33k331121d ago

if this happened in 2042, they'd have something to say. which is weird, considering battlefield 1 has more players on steam right now.

Pudge1028881121d ago

Its so obvious that EA is doing this or hired ppl to mess up the games so that we’d be forced to have just 1 Battlefield working.

FPS_D3TH1121d ago

Honestly it’s probably the devs themselves. They did an update to bf4 way back that kinda made assault rifles doo doo in hopes that people would flock to BF1 cuz BF4 was too perfect

There's a bunch of great shooters on gamepass; both legacy and new.

A recommendation I have is a work in progress preview title called Anacrusis. It's a lot of fun, and has a cool aesthetic.

5 Games That Started Out As A Buggy Mess

KeenGamer: "Sometimes a game starts out as a buggy mess and we all just stop and think, “that definitely could have spent a bit more time in the oven”. This is the case for these 5 games which infamously marked their place in recent game memory."
