Killzone: Shadow Fall Lead Designer on Launch Reviews: "Disappointing" and "Surprising" - AusGamers

AusGamers was given a rare chance to chat with a lead developer after a game's release when Guerilla Games' Eric Boljes gave them his two-cents on the critical and consumer feedback for Killzone: Shadow Fall, by taking time out of a personal holiday in Australia, where he granted a handful of interviews. AusGamers asked how the team has been handling reviews and feedback.

"Well to be honest, when the reviews first came in, we were a little bit disappointed," Boljes confessed. "Because I personally feel that this is the best Killzone we’ve ever made; I honestly feel that. You’re right, we did try a lot of new things, we tried to innovate the gameplay, and we did try to make a different Killzone than before.

"...and the reviews, they are mixed… we’re doing something different, and it’s really interesting in that a lot of people are saying we’re not different enough, and [what] the other side is saying is “what they’re doing is too different from the original Killzone”. It’s interesting, but I’m still really proud of what we’ve made."

The full interview also covers off topics of control for the FPS genre, where he sees the PS4's future heading, next-gen in general and a reminder that Killzone isn't all the studio has cooking.

What we know about Guerrilla New IP:

-It's an RPG, or very heavy in those elements.
-Officially announced to be in development since 2010
-John Gonzalez is the lead writer for the story. He wrote fallout: new vegas
-It's open world
-Possibly be fantasy themed with vampires, werewolves, etc
-It's completely different from killzone. If that means gameplay, setting or tone is yet to be determined..

Anyway, I thought shadow fall was great for a launch title. It's the best killzone, so why did it not score better than killzone 3. No excuse there, that game was a mess. To what standards are we holding titles like KZ 3, to where it appears better than an obvious improved sequel? Give me a break. It just feels like there's always been some in built bias against killzone. It's always been that way, so meh.

Abash4213d ago

Killzone: Shadow Fall was a great start for the series on PS4, Im sure they'll do an even better job on the next Killzone without the pressure of having to have the game out for launch.

Some reviews were a bit nonsensical with the criticism, but regardless KZ: Shadow Fall is by far one of the first must have next gen games out so far

xHeavYx4213d ago

A lot of the sites that rated Killzone badly for being generic also rated games like COD highly, go figure

combatcash4213d ago

I always found killzone to be a meh just really pretty, I'll be picking this one up in the future. Can anyone let me know if this has any destructible environments?

georgeenoob4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Well, let's be real. Killzone was always known to focus strictly on graphics and have bland gameplay. No surprise here.

@below

First of all, I'm talking about the Killzone franchise and what it's notorious for. Second, Ryse is a new IP so what the hell are you talking about?

Snookies124213d ago

@georgeenoob - You're thinking of Ryse. Lol, sorry couldn't help it. That game looks great, but is just so dull to play...

BattleAxe4213d ago

From what little i played of Killzone: Shadow Fall's single player, it didn't excite me at all really. I'm sure the multiplayer is where the game shines though.

NewMonday4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

I'm a big KZ fan and I think KZ:SF has great graphics & gameplay

BUT!

GG shouldn't ignore the real constructive criticism directed at the..

- story/writing quality , at Naughty Dog plot/characters/storyboarding are as important as gameplay, they should learn from them, Amy Hennig is a big producer at ND, she studied at film school and majored in English literature, she is not a coder, that is why ND games always get the script right, Sony need to put someone like that at GG alongside Ter Heide and Hermen Hulst.

- quick death non shooting sequences like the freefall bit, if they can't do them right they should just make them cut-scenes

- confusing mission markers

- the AI is great in combat but has stupid initial player detection, and only a few NPCs react to the player, again learn from ND the Last of Us did great with this.

iamnsuperman4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

@newmonday

I feel you have hit the nail on the head there. It has problems (coming from a fan of the series) and guerilla games should learn from the criticism. Not ignore it

Calvin_ISA4213d ago

NewMonday has it right!

I have been a HUGE Killzone fan since the first, and I feel like Shadowfall was (although a VERY beautiful and smooth game) frustrating in a few areas.

Freefall part - although I only died from it once, it was very unclear and frustrated some.

Spiderbot hack/vent part - When you first get to hack the spiderbots, I had no idea where the vent was she wanted me to go through.

The part where there's a ton of Helghast and the game doesn't prompt you that there's a huge ship with unlimited bullets you can hop in behind you.

The story. That ending. Very out of nowhere and strange. I didn't get it at all. I liked the credits though. ;)

I feel the story was very disjointed compared to the rest in the series, but overall the game is pretty solid.

I have yet to play online, due to life getting in the way. :(

Gazondaily4213d ago

Shadow Fall really is a mediocre game. I just don't see how anyone can think otherwise. Yeah the visuals, in the single player mode at least, are great but it is such a hollow game. The MP in particular is uninspiring and falls short of the standards of even it's much lauded predecessor.

I'll finish the campaign to give it my final verdict but having sunk some time into the mp, I don't see the appeal at all.

abzdine4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

This is a Killzone fan talking here, i found Shadow Fall boring and with no identity, feels like GG are still looking for the recipe cause they just changed EVERYTHING from last episodes.
KZ2 and 3 were famous for their very good AI, SF falls short with the most retarded AI i could imagine in a next gen game. There was a time where a Helghast was running towards me and shooting and another running opposite and doing nothing..WTF?

I know KZ is never about SP but then let's talk multiplayer.
First off it's not intense at ALL, graphics are too clean and don't reflect a real battlefield.
If you compare Bigarsk Boulevard from KZ3 and a similar map in SF the one from KZ3 feels much more like a real battlefield with the dust, explosions and everything.. so just from the beginning the games isn't immersive AT ALL!
I regret the lack of rank up and unlock systems from the previous ones, to me there is no challenge if everything is unlocked from the beginning. Do you imagine playing FF with all weapons and abilities unlocked from the beginning??
They changed the names of the missions, reduced the number of classes, no enginner or tactician classes, changed ALL the weapons and there are only hand grenades (no more mines). No ammo crates when you run dry, the shielded guys are all over and are overpowered and encourages camping. When you have 5 guys standing next to each other and activating the shield no way you can pass, especially in the search and destroy missions.
Maps variety is really lacking. in KZ3 we had snow maps, a real forest map... in SF the forest map doesn't look like a forest. Completly removed the jetpacks and exos which were lots of fun.
Also, the removed the 3D and Move which really is a disappointment cause i feel like they are cutting to much from previous games.

This is at least my first impression with this game. I will play it some more hoping that things improve once i get used to the change, but so far just feels like a downgrade to me.

EDIT: I expected Shadow Fall to amaze me and keep me busy, it's finally Knack that did it cause that game is crazy and really reminds me of the old platformers with a good dose of challenge and gorgeous graphics.

And you know what, i turned off Shadow Fall yesterday after 15min of gaming and i decided to play KZ3 with Move in 3D, just to show how much it bored me.

NewMonday4213d ago

@Septic

imperfect game =/= mediocre game

how about some constructive criticism instead of a general rant, Angry Joe did it great, he talked about it bit by bit, then we can discuss the good and bad stuff and hopefully the developers can learn something.

Ausbo4213d ago

KIllzone is way better than the reviews say it is. But i only played the multiplayer. It was a blast.

The launch reviews were too harsh for both systems games. Knack isn't that bad, and Ryse is better than they give it credit for.

Gazondaily4213d ago

@newmonday

I will do a review later.

Regarding your imperfect game=/= mediocre game comment, no game is perfect so your analogy is flawed. It is a mediocre game. I sunk in hours on the MP hoping again and again that I was missing something. I wasn't. The MP feels like something you get in free to play games.

I'll elaborate later.

I spoke to Guerilla Games at launch and I kind of had a go at them lol. They were really cool and actually agreed with a lot of what I said to them. Such nice guys. I think I recorded it so will put it up.

pyramidshead4213d ago

lol @georgeenoob still trying to stealth troll or being objective troll.

Noticed the extra 'e' too, I'm guessing a second account and already down to one bubble. This is why you should never really take seriously what he says, like ever.

UnHoly_One4213d ago

To each his own, Snookies...

I played Killzone with my buddies a couple times over the course of launch week, and haven't powered my PS4 back on since because I can't quit playing Ryse.

It's amazing. But isn't that what makes games great? There is something for everyone and we don't all have to like the same thing.

Sevir4212d ago

Killzone:Shadow Fall is solid but it has a share number of problems that hold it back from being really great.

The story isnt the issue... Though that ending was abrubt and silly even Chapter 10.

the portion of the game that needs work is the frustrating AI, It isnt bad, but it isnt fantastic either. I'm a KZ fan but i had much better time playing the campaign of KZ2 and to a degree a degree KZ3.

What i hated about KZ:SF is how damn large and confusing the maps are. Id have appreciated this more if ever level wasn't so huge and open, even with way points finding the path to move on to to get to the story was poorly executed! It made the campaign feel less about the story and more about surviving the enemies that kept respawning since you really couldnt locate the next way point fast enough. There were times where i was just left wandering about the map!! The game took longer than the 10 hours it was to last and by half way through I just wanted to get to the end of the game. The story wasnt boring, but getting to the story points were just laborious. Id have loved if they did a mix of prodominantly linear and a smattering of Open, multifaceted levels to break up the monotony , it was always just OPEN OPEN OPEN with way too many waves of respawning helghast.

In terms of Gameplay, its absolutely awesome, a big step up from KZ3, multiplayer is a great as KZ2 for me and i totally enjoy how responsive it is now running at 60fps.

Graphics were never an issue! its absolutely splendid and by far the best looking Console game ive seen.

I hope they take all the feedback they get and really hire so great people to help the staff out, they are talented and they've done a fantastic forward pushing the series forward. Its definately not any of the low scores the media has been giving it. and for me it sits at an 8.5/10 KZ2 is Still the best in the franchise and if they look at what makes KZ2 so fantastic and apply it to the next KZ game it'll be fantastic.

Still after that WTF ending, I think they might be done with KZ all together

Any fps that Isn't cod or bf will get judged unfairly. People need to realize it's not cod or battlefield, it's killzone or crysis or watever other shooters there are.

Irishguy954213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Wrong way around. Every game besides BF and COd get judged Fairly. COD and BF get passes on being generic and not doing anything new. KZ got what it deserves. Cod and BF did not. Although I hardly see what BF can do anymore. It has everything already. What..make it more linear? Take out the vehicles? No destruction? That would make it Cod and Killzone. DICE just have to make the game ****ing work.

"We innovated the gameplay"

No, adding climbing and bullet time is not innovation. Really, GG just don't have a clue these days. Got lucky with Kz2 and went downhill again.

I would say

COD ghosts - Bad game
BF4 - Broken
KZ SF - Average

KZ is for early adopters to the PS4. No one in their right mind would chose SF over a high quality last gen shooter.

Also, devs have no excuse for making a worse game than before with this hardware. All they did was get stronger hardware, and literally all of the next gen devs managed to **** it up

Studio-YaMi4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

I'm into chapter 9 of Killzone:Shadow fall,I enjoy this game! you that a game is good when you want to get back home from work ASAP just to finish where you left off.

It's not perfect but it isn't as bad as the reviews try to make it seem!

Personally I give this game a 7.5/8 out of 10.
(playing the game on Hard mode btw!) :D

@Irishguy95
"KZ is for early adopters to the PS4. No one in their right mind would chose SF over a high quality last gen shooter."

Keep telling yourself that,I rather have a unique Sci-Fi experience with a different art style than your typical modern shooter with the same rehashes(Russia-America-China- Terrorists).

TomShoe4213d ago

Unfortunately, the trolls and fanboys (Polygon) got to it first.

dillhole4213d ago

I don't think this is really true. I have KZSF and while it is pretty, and more in depth than many shooters I just don't find it that exciting to play. We are entering a new generation, this got 75 average on metacritic. All that says is that we know that games can get a lot better than this. If it got 90 I'd be worried. I'm glad we demand better.

Riderz13374213d ago

Actually we don't know anything about their new IP...lol.

Hellsvacancy4213d ago

We know its an rpg and it's being written by John Gonzalez http://www.pushsquare.com/n...

Evil_Abed4213d ago

Yes, Killzone 2 scored 91 because of all the bias against it. Gimme a break buddy.

Average games will get average scores, that's the way it is and has always been. KZ2 got lucky because it was such a technical marvel beyond anything reviewers had seen on console at the time.

There is no great KZ bias conspiracy and if there was, a mess of a game (by your own admission) like KZ3 wouldn't have scored an 84.

ssj274213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

I guess we will see GG new IP on E3 2014 like we always do.
Killzone shadow fall is on the same level of Killzone 1 or 3 maybe a little better but Killzone 2 is still a level above it.

All the next Killzone needs is better acting /directing .. Killzone 3/shadow fall felt dull, loke a low budget movie.

They could improve on the missions but most where good! Fun..

And one more thing it needs to go back to the 20+ calculations it had gor each bullet like in KZ2, kz3 lowered to something like 6+ and that is what maked feel dull compared to KZ2.

My point is if the next killzone has better acting/directing and 20+ bullet calculations it will be on the same level of KZ2 and that is a 90+ in metacritics.

MrTrololo4213d ago

It good that they beginning to make a New IP which is a RPG games. Killzone Shadow Fall should be the last killzone games and we have enough of FPS games already. We got Battlefield and COD,we don't need any more FPS games.

Irishguy954213d ago

Completely agree, to many devs are doing shooters these days. I want GG to branch out more because I don't think FPS'es are for them. Especially when they only ever make average ones. I also want Naughty Dog to go back to adventure/puzzle/platformers.

Not because they don't do shooters well, but because they are one of the few fevs left that can pull off the adventure genre so well. Only nintendo can manage to get up to the quality of games like Jak and Dax and crash bandicoot these days in that genre.

I will never ever complain about more RPG's.

DeadlyFire4213d ago

Last Killzone? haha I doubt that.

Shadow Fall is one step closer and better than the games before it in the Killzone IP. SP is great. I feel like they could have expanded upon it some more, but owell. MP is kinda what throws its grade downhill I believe. Its great yeah sure, but 90% of FPS gamers are used to fast paced FPS blend. Its hard for some to adjust to heavy feeling FPS and experience it the way its meant to be played.

joab7774213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

It does have built in bias. Killzone 2 is one of my all time favorite games and I think they went towards mainstream with Killzone 3. Shadowfall is good...really good, but they had to know they were gonna catch flak. First, I think that one of the drawbacks has alway been the story. It has one of the greatest antagonists in video games history...but goes to waste. They added strategy to an fps at the same time CoD and B4 release, though I will say that SF and B4 hav similar elements like ordering ur teammates or bot to attack or marking enemies etc. Then...they removed traditional leveling for an fps that already uses tactical classes etc. You are different Killzone. You should have accepted your niche hardcore status with K2 and continued to build on that. There is no need to appeal to Halo and CoD fans. You have ur own. The multi is getting praise b/c its amazing. Its just that we have been flooded with fps titles and 4-6 hr campaigns that are made as engine tech demos. Keep doing what u r doing but remember ur true fans and screw the masses. They r just gonna play CoD anyway.

bjmartynhak4213d ago

Just finished Shadow Fall on hard this weekend.

The game is really awesome, only two things are not great:
- Storytelling
- Infinite spawn enemies in certain parts (middle of the chapter 9 was the only one that really annoyed me, it is actually easy when you find the best spot)

Seriously, the story is really good on paper and the universe is incredibly rich.. shame that the storytelling was poor.

The OWL is great, easy to control, using the touchpad does not feel a gimmick and you do have to use... if you don't you are going to die a lot!

ajkula4213d ago

the story telling in kzsf was amazing,,,
its been one of the best fps.
the story was actually more mature than the average.

bjmartynhak4213d ago

^ Story was great and mature. I agree. The settings is also fantastic. I love the Killzone universe.

But the storytelling/narrative could be better.
They are different things.

I allowed myself to get immersed, but I understand some folks that haven't.

sAVAge_bEaST4212d ago

I loved the challenge of the game, I found it refreshing. -I to just finished it over the weekend. (Story telling was horrid, graphics were the best)

Volkama4213d ago

Reviews of flagship titles are usually nonsense. Impacted by the weight of expectation and scored politically.

I haven't played KZ yet, but I'll give it a go. I thoroughly enjoyed Ryse and that got terrible scores.

Salooh4213d ago

If you compare it to the other games it have better graphics . If you compare it to the previous games it's better in everything except for story and how guns feels(Yes i prefer the old guns and the darker atmosphere).

ajkula4213d ago

arent you confusing atmosphere with environnements?!
coz kzsf's atmosphere is really dark!

M-M4213d ago

Most of the people that reviewed it lower haven't even fully immersed themselves in the multiplayer. If you have to say that the multiplayer is "generic" then you're trippin.

staticdash224213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

I've said it before. People have hits out for killzone inherently. Probably still stemming from the fact that some called it a halo killer back in the day. Must be still butthurt that "they dared to disrespect halo". Kind of childish that people still hold that kind of grudge.

Killzone is a good game in its own right. Some say its niche, but its a great game for fans of the franchise. Maybe its not so bad that it doesn't hit mainstream status, that's fine with me. Killzone is an awesome shooter for playstation fans, in its own niche. It makes Sony money as each of them have sold over a million copies.

HighResHero4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Yeah, I'm kind of glad that hordes of "COD fanboy" types aren't jumping over to Shadow Fall or Mercenary. The fact that it stays just below the radar so to speak means that hordes of drones will get their kicks elsewhere.

@Majin: I have a ton of respect for GG for not having Aim assist. I play competitive games for the challenge.

@Delta: If it was called "COD Shadow Fall" it would be getting all 9s and 10s, get outta town.

MrUndrhill4213d ago

I agree. I think Sony is partly to blame, as you said. Killzone was the Halo killer, Killzone 2 had the CG scandal, Killzone 3 had to be Move/3D and now Shadowfall is the flagship launch title. They have always put massive pressure on the franchise, instead of letting it be it's own thing. It is a really unique shooter in a great world, it is too bad for GG that it always has to wave the Sony banners so high.

ZorinInc4213d ago

Kotaku stated they reviewed the game with only 3 hours access playing the multiplayer at a Sony hosted press event and that will be the same for probably almost all major publication reviews.

How anyone can make a judgement on a key component of the game in that time is beyond me. All that time developing maps, weapon upgrades, modes for a knee jerk reaction can't do it justice.

Majin-vegeta4213d ago

People are just hating on KZ cuz they tried something new instead of the same old crap every shooter does nowadays and the matter that you dont get rewarded with aim assist.

Evil_Abed4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Let's follow that logic down the rabbit hole shall we? If Shadow Fall was poorly received because it was something new and different then KZ 2 was well recieved because it was something old and generic...yes?

Why do Sony fans not think before saying such nonsense? Why is it that reviewers only seem to get things wrong when rating a PS exclusive poorly or rating a non PS centric game very well?

Can we please bring up bias and credibility when games like LBP and TLoU get great scores? I mean let's shake things up a bit. How is. it we can call these same reviewers noobs and biased and then go flaunting the GOTY awards they give our favorite games? Seems a bit inconsistent and...biased f us no?

No of course not, what am I saying? No PS exclusive is average, KZ is the best ever.

WeAreLegion4213d ago

Xsilver4213d ago

this guy literally made me hate abed and Community is my favorite show darkest timeline indeed.

MrUndrhill4213d ago

Almost all fans in this industry kick up dust when the game they are excited for doesn't get the scores they want, not just sony fans. It is part of the craziness of the score obsessed nature of this industry. Also Killzone is a very divisive franchise, you pretty much love or hate it. I love it, but I know a lot of people who don't.

IRetrouk4213d ago

@ mr, im one of the people that dont love or hate killzone, i play them casualy and enjoy them well enough, one thing i will say is that i love the no auto aim, the graphics and how the game controls and runs, story to me so far is average with nothing really holding my attention, another thing i think is cool is the audio from the logs coming through the controllers speakers, not played multi player yet so cant give an opinion on that, so far its a solid 7/10 for me.

Please do tell me what KZ does anything different from any other shooter games ? Even Halo is 2x better than KZ cause the story and gameplay is amazing

dcj05244213d ago

Its a hybrid between your standart arena shooter and a moderen fps like COD minus all the lag, OP guns, and no aim assist. Its a niche thing. When you play it, it "feels" different.

Thatguy-3104213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

The game looks amazing and it's easily the best looking next gen game. However they need to have more depth to the story. Introduce great characters and develop them well. That's the only bad thing about the Killzone series. The story lacks. Only if the narrative shown by Naughty Dog fuse with the presentation of GG then we would have an amazing game. Let's hope the new IP has story that immerses the player.

curtis924213d ago

I think you're completely spot on. The gameplay I thought was brilliant but they just can't get me really invested in characters (in any kz so far).

combatcash4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

@curtis92

Brilliant gameplay for a shooter? lol
I haven't played this game but I haven't played a recent FPS in which I found the gamplay brilliant.

I am currently playing BF4 on PS4 and all I can say is that the maps at least in comparison to previous killzone games are brilliant but the gameplay isn't much different.

@curtis92

Again I haven't played KZ but I will in the future, and honestly I doubt the gameplay will be brilliant. What is so brilliant about the gameplay I presume we still get to use guns what is it that changed from kz2 to kz3 to kz sf that makes it brilliant?

curtis924213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

@combatcash talking about the campaign here, not multiplayer. The gameplay offers much more than your typical COD/BF game. Not to mention more than twice the length.

curtis924213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

@combatcash That's fine if you don't think you'll agree with me.

To answer your question: the OWL.

@combatcash Obsessed with my opinion much? Good Lord man. You obviously don't agree (despite having not played the game) so let it be. How am I full of it for giving my opinion?

The OWL gives the game added depth to the ways you can approach the game. It's not longer super linear. Many areas can be approached in whatever way you want. Combat is challenging enough to keep you from just going in guns blazing so being tactical is always helpful. I thought it was brilliantly executed and the gameplay was polished.

combatcash4213d ago

@curtis92

I am asking you a simple question.
What makes killzone SF's gameplay brilliant? you seem to be unable to explain the brilliance of the gameplay. Which is why I think you are full of it, just my opinion.

@Delta your a troll everyone main reason your on a KZ article when you clearly show that you have no interest in the game :/ smfh.

IRetrouk4213d ago

@delta, what you say might be true for you, but each game has sold over a million, that usually means a profit, maybe thats why sony keeps investing? You say sony fanboys need to stop talking about this game, so far most comments i see are from people who have played this game and have said how THEY feel about it, more fans than fanboys i would say, you also talk about quality, have you played the game yet? Whats your take on the overall feel of the game?

staticdash224213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Yea, because every studio makes games that sell a million copies, right? That's very hard to do in todays' game industry. One million copies sold is a gold achievement because of how crowded the medium is. A game that sells 2+ million is a pretty established franchise, and that's serious money for the publisher. Killzone would have been long gone if it didn't make Sony money, wake up you moron.

Tontus4213d ago

If an AAA game can't sell over 1 million copies within it's first month, when it's still full price, then it's not doing well enough.

As far as I know both Killzone 2 & 3 achieved 1m+ within a month with little to no bundling, so obviously it is a well established series that must make a nice little profit for Sony. As long as the series has games that break the 1m barrier that quickly and can sell 2-3m each then there's a future for the series.

GTgamer4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

KZSF was the highest Pre ordered First Party exclusive so Sony made a good decision, First Guirella Games are very talented Devs and worked hard to be where they are today so because you don't like their games Sony should fire them :/ people like you deserve no bubbles on N4g.

Just for the record... we don't even know anything about Xbox One software sales yet so kind of early for everyone to announce Killzone being the wonder child of launch exclusives. That said, we've yet to see PS4 data outside of the US either and Europe should have a strong showing going by everything we've been shown.

I expect Killzone to keep pulling ahead though as it already has a pretty high install base all things considered (1 out of 3 in US which is impressive no matter how you look at it). Dead Rising and Forza are both contenders though.

Ryse I think will likely do better than Knack but could be close. Both are actually sort of similar as somewhat simple and repetitive gameplay wise just one is targeted more towards Adults and the other families. I would score them about the same personally (around 7-7.5 although think Knack was little more consistent enjoyment wise--mostly because some of Ryse's ranged combat was just so bland and uninspiring compared to melee).

Personally my favorite exclusive so far though is DR3 as even with its technical hiccups its fun to play. I enjoy exploring the world and collecting all the plans/etc which really helps push it to be my number 1. I still probably wouldn't give it anything higher than an 8-8.5 which is a bit depressing as truth is BF4/AC4 are arguably the best games so far this new generation (although BF4 needs fixed so holds it back some).

Still, I'm happy with what we've seen so far and I know the best is still to come.

Do you know what a AAA game is? High reviews don't make a game AAA. If that was the case then I guess Journey was AAA. Lmfao.

Jughead34164213d ago

Deltaguy you must be an XBONER. Anyone who's seriously played Killzone knows that this game got the shaft.

Imalwaysright4213d ago

The 1st killzone was definetely straight garbage. Won't comment on the other killzone games because after playing the 1st for 3 or 4 hours the franchise was dead to me. Worst € 20 I spent in my life.

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT227d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus227d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius227d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX234d ago (Edited 234d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne234d ago (Edited 234d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro234d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown234d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72234d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya234d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast234d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood234d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer577d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138577d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga577d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

577d ago
Notellin576d ago (Edited 576d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem577d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos577d ago (Edited 577d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor577d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies576d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim576d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese576d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto576d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

GoodGuy09577d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic577d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld577d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie577d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77577d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231576d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein577d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

P_Bomb577d ago

It’s been a decade? Now I’m sad.

LiViNgLeGaCY576d ago

I hear ya bud. We're due for a revival.
