Xbox One Impressions: Still not better with Kinect

From the article, "We are three years and two consoles into Kinect’s career, and [Brian Allen] remain unconvinced this device was worth paying $100 more than a PS4 to bring into my home. Kinect still has no killer app. While it can do some things in existing titles such as Dead Rising 3, none of them would have made the device a must purchase. It was cute to distract zombies with my voice, but I began ignoring voice prompts pretty quickly afterwards. Sometimes you just want to headshot zombies quietly, you know?"

"unconvinced this device was worth paying $100 more"

That's my main gripe too. Sure, it may be cool, but is it $100 more cool? Is the novelty of using it going to wear off like it did with the previous Kinect? I don't particularly want to pay £80 more than a PS4 for an X1 with Kinect, but i am going to. Thank goodness for Ebay.

GarrusVakarian4209d ago

If people want it and want to spend money for it so bet it, i genuinely hope you get enjoyment/satisfaction out of it. But please give people who aren't interested in the tech whatsoever the option to buy the X1 on its own.

I just want to game with a controller in my hands.

Totally the opposite Kinect was well worth the cost as I think most owners would say. It works very well with the dash and integrates with TV and gaming all quick and easy. Now besides the UI here is what making Kinect standard has done already vs ps camera:

Games that will support* Kinect 2.

Assassin's Creed 4
Battlefield 4
Cod Ghost
Crimson Dragon
D4
Dead Rising 3
Fable Legends
Madden NFL 25
NBA 2k14
Need For Speed Rivals
Peggle 2
PvZ Garden Warfare
Project Spark
Sunset Overdrive
The Witcher 3: wild Hunt

*this means that while the game is not a motion game primarily, it has features that use kinect such as voice commands, leaning, etc.

Here is a list compairing motion games that have been announced for the Kinect 2 and Playstation 4 camera.

Announced Kinect 2 games:

Kinect Sports Rivals
Zumba Fitness:  World Party
Xbox Fitness
Just Dance 2014
Fantasia Music Evolved

Announced Playstation Camera Games:

Playroom
Just Dance

Edit: vvvvNo Lukas as with anything in life that means if a company sales a product that while you like some features but "don't care" for others then you simply are not the target of that product and thus choose not to buy it. Forcing it out would gimp it's future potential impact on the depth of the overall console thus limiting the company's vision of where it can go and the folks who want more, micro rightfully chose their vision and fans of that vision over the naysayers.

@^^^

That may be so but you have to accept the fact that many people just don't want/care for it and want the option to buy a kinect-less X1. Shouldn't be forced on people.

I don't want to pay £80 extra for "leaning" "or voice commands".....i can just use the controller which is just as fast if not faster. I think it's just a gimmick, a cool but ultimately limited/unnecessary gimmick.

malokevi4209d ago

Lukas, the controller is nowhere near as fast. Sorry to break it to you.

Try looking for a specific movie/game, or a genre, or a music artist, or... anything, on your PS4. I'll be there and back again 10 times on my X1. Guaranteed. There is quite literally no contest.

Yeah...

No...

I have both and no. Just no. I will have a YouTube video up this weekend showing you how wrong you are.

10x really?

Defend your side, sure. Thats what fanboys do.

But do not sound like an idiot doing it...it just looks bad for everyone.

@JokesOnYou:
The XB1 was built around Kinect, of course the UI works best with it. In many ways the exact problem with Kinect is MS mandate that it be considered if not included in anything involved with the XB1.

That's why MS didn't think anything about making Kinect required to be plugged in the console until people complained about it.

malokevi4209d ago

You have both? We'll, then, say "Xbox, Bing" and then say literally anything you are looking for. And tell me you can get to it faster on the PS4 by scrolling with the controller to whatever App you need, and then typing in each letter on the on-screen keyboard.

Or, you know, just say "no, no no no NO NO NO!!!"

"unconvinced this device was worth paying $100 more"

This is my issue, I would get an X1 but I really can't see why I should pay all that extra money for something I don't want or will use. sure the voice features are cool but I personally don't need them.

-Foxtrot4209d ago

That is why there should be a Kinect-less bundle next year

Cyb3r4209d ago (Edited 4209d ago )

I dunno man if there were a Kinect-less bundle then Im sure a lot of day one buyers including myself would be pissed

-Foxtrot4209d ago

Isn't that the risk of buying a launch console though....especially if it's Microsoft.

Cyb3r4209d ago

Yeah I guess considering its M$

chrissx4209d ago (Edited 4209d ago )

The kinect is nothing more than an expensive gimmick. Don't be suprised by another M$ 180 cheaper kinectless bundle when the pressure is on to sell millions more consoles

malokevi4209d ago

I'm not sure why people keep saying things like:

"Our Jeremy Hill notes Kinect is the best way to navigate the new menu. But as he mentioned, that’s because the user interface is needlessly complex. "

It seems reaallly simple to me. Easy to do with the controller. 10x faster to do without. I've played with the PS4 UI, and it seems more complex than the X1 UI to me.

I'm glad for Kinect inclusion. So far, it has more than proven itself to me as a useful tool for navigating the UI, searching the internet, using the bing functionality to find movies/games in the various Apps.

For instance, my girlfriend wanted to watch "A Christmas Story" last night. So, "Xbox, Bing" "A Christmas Story". and BAM, there it is. Then you just say "video" "rent/buy" and you've got it running on your console. Then when she decided she hates that movie, I said, Ok.... "Xbox, Bing! Christmas Movies" and I've got a list of all the latest and greatest right there, easily navigable, no controller required. I've never seen anything like it, incredibly impressive.

The more time I spend with it, the more uses I find for it, and the more I'm happy to have it. My girl loves it. Now, once it proves itself more in the gaming space, it will be unstoppable. I'm already digging the lean function in Battlefield, and absolutely loving head tracking in Forza. I have no doubt that as time goes on we're going to see some great stuff. But, for the asking price, it has already proven itself to me! :D

I'm sure you phantom disagree-ers have all kinds of valid reasons for disagreeing.
