Dying Light Dev Doesn't Like Comparisons with Dead Island and Mirror's Edge: "It's Lazy" - AusGamers

AusGamers spoke one on one with Techland producer, Tymon Smektala, who ran them through a lot of what their zombie survival title, Dying Light, is all about.

While the game itself can be said to channel elements of DICE's Mirror's Edge and Techland's own Dead Island series, Smektala isn't a fan of the comparisons.

"I think it’s a lazy thing to say," the producer asserts. "If you look at the game, it has zombies in it and it’s melee-based, so it is Dead Island, then you look at it again and see that the motion has that free-running aspect to it, so it is Mirror’s Edge.

"Of course, that description is ok, and covers the basics of Dying Light, but I don’t personally really like that description because it’s just a very small part of the picture that we’re trying to paint here... Mirror’s Edge really was a game that opened a lot of eyes, but even though it looked like it was set in an open-world, it was a corridor game with only a few objects that you could interact with. With the current demo of Dying Light, and how the whole game plays right now -- I’m pretty happy with how it plays -- you’re really not limited. You can think of any way to get around the environment and you can use that way, if it looks like it’s realistic for you to go there."

The full interview covers off a lot more including co-op, their new engine, systems and much more.

Well, Dead Island Riptide was lazy, so tough.

dumahim4225d ago

Kind of hard to not compare it to Dead Island when it's using some of the same animations and same combo weapons that were in Dead Island, albeit in much higher quality now.

FlyingFoxy4225d ago

Both Dead Island's are overrated IMO, the best Zombie/Infected games are Left 4 Dead 2 and Killing Floor, well when it comes to fun anyway.

Pintheshadows4225d ago

I also am a big fan of Left for Dead. I am also partial to State of Decay and Dead Nation.

theDivision4225d ago

L4D was definitely fun especially the split screen coop. State of decay would have been so much more fun (IMO) if I could have create my own character and given him all the flaws I have, though it was still worth the 20$ all the same.

I have high hopes for Dying Light.

After seeing the amazing trailer for the first game I ended up buying it the day it came out. Never before have I returned a game the day after I'd bought it until then. Such a crappy game, I like deep involving adult themed stories which is what was portrayed by the trailer, what I got instead was a mindless amalgamation of zombie battering, incredibly stiff game mechanics and terrible acting

Pintheshadows4225d ago

The voice acting was so bad it was hilarious. One character going from Australian to South African to Pacific Islander in one conversation was truly a new level of spectacularly bad voice acting.

It made Just Cause 2's voice acting look exemplary.

I get where he is coming from. But it's name references like that, that help people decribe and understand what kind of game you are talking about.

If I knew nothing of a new game and someone said it is like The Legend of Zelda, BOOM, I can instantly picture a game dungeon crawling, exploration, etc.

I even reference this game a Mirrors Edge meets Dead Island. Sure theres much more to it then that, but on a base level, it instantly gets the point across to someone that has no knowledge of this game.

Rzep4225d ago

They've been talking about how different this game is to Dead Island for a long time now so I can see them getting tired with the Dead Island/ME simplification.

I really like what they are doing with Dying Light. A focus on survival and making zombies truly deadly is a nice way to shake up the formula they had with the previous games.

The problem with saying this is like Dead Island is that, someone who played Dead Island will then buy Dying Light and quickly die, because while even a horde of zombies in Dead Island wasn't a threat here fighting is barely an option and running is the right way to go.

Mogwai4225d ago

A different slant on this could be that it was lazy of them to do another first person zombie melee game!
luckily this looks like its shaping up to be the game dead island should of been and i for one am actually looking forward to it.

thankyou, make your own game, make games be comparisons of you, be greater and youll have my purchase :p

Nobody bought it for an obvious reason.

Gamingsince1981119d ago

Wtf did this edition come with ? A real helicopter and a real zombie virus ?

Vithar118d ago

For one lucky person willing to spend $386,000, the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light promised a staggering collection. It included the buyer’s face in the game, a human-sized ‘Volatile’ statue, and parkour lessons with a freerunning team. It also came with night vision goggles, an all-expenses paid round trip to Techland’s offices, and four signed copies of the game. Oh, and it also came with a custom-built, ‘zombie-proof’ survival shelter.

LOL but it was a stunt from the team:
‘It was a PR stunt and got a lot of media attention for its wild and over-the-top nature, it was designed to generate buzz around the game’s release. It did a great job of getting the game noticed, though! But nobody purchased it – thankfully, I guess!’

I finally beat DL2 this past weekend. I’ll pick up the Beast for sure.

It got a lot of shit from fans more not being as scary at night on release. I was in that boat. But once I gave it a fair shot I really loved it. The movement was so much more expressive to me. I enjoyed the story too.... for the most part. Was my game of the year when it came out. With all the updates for darker nights and all that, it's even better. I feel almost exactly the same about stalker 2 right now. The erojank games are scratching my itch.
