Guerrilla thinks Killzone: Shadow Fall just scratched the power of the PS4

Some interesting tech talk by Guerrilla Games confirms that there's a lot of room to grow in PS4, even after the impressive looking Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Agreed, plenty more power to spare!

Hatsune-Miku4230d ago

I cant wait to see uncharted on ps4 or another killzone on ps4. If these first party sony devs were able to do games that rival pc top end games with specs 20times weaker than certain pc hardware then theyll do amazing things on ps4

GamerXD4230d ago

Yeah. Just like ND did on PS3. 10x more power is a complete overkill. The next 6 yrs., we'll see photo realistic graphics on PS4 yay!

MidnytRain4229d ago

Rival? Lol, what games are you talking about...

Grave4229d ago

I totally agree. We all should be really excited to see what Naughty Dog is gonna do in the next few years. They are basically turning into the console version of Valve when it comes to games.

Tontus4229d ago (Edited 4229d ago )

Naughty Dog & Guerilla are some of the best in the industry but none compare to Sony Santa Monica for pushing console visuals, seriously look at their games, even with v-sych at 40-50fps with MLAA they blow away the competition.

Now just imagine what their PS4 game will look like.

Just completed the story mode. The graphics are worlds beyond PS3 launch titles such as Resistance. I died several times from site seeing. I can't wait to see devs maxing out the system some years from now.

TheTwelve4230d ago

"I died several times from site seeing."

Same here man! haha

Boody-Bandit4229d ago (Edited 4229d ago )

Killzone literally puts meaning in the phrase "graphics to die for"

I can't tell you how many times I either died or nearly died while graphics gazing. The explosions, smoke, fire, embers, lighten, etc... It was just so surreal. I am playing it over again right now.

Too many games and not enough time. And some say this was a weak launch line up. Tell that to my wife. She has barely seen me since the PS4 launched (my gaming room is in the basement). Then again she hasn't appeared to be this happy and at ease in long time. What's up with that? Bah who cares. Back to the man cave to get my Killzone on.

Ulf4230d ago

I'd rather have a locked 60 fps in campaign mode than some of the post-processing they mention, but I'll take it!

MidnytRain4229d ago

That's what's cool about being able to adjust graphical settings. You can boost the frame rate if you want by turning off effects you don't care about.

Angainor74230d ago

don't want to troll here honestly, but do you really compare Shadow Fall vs Ryse? i mean come on, just look at this...

http://i2.wp.com/gearnuke.c...

http://images.gamersyde.com...

gameplay sucks indeed, but in terms of graphics? come on...

flappersack4230d ago

Where was Ryse mentioned in this article?

Angainor74230d ago

Shadow Fall has been mentioned in Ryse's articles several times..

Jughead34164230d ago

Ok, I'll play along. Put Ryse on PS4 and I bet you it'll look better and run at 1080P, 60FPS

Kayant4230d ago

Yh facial animation/modelling yh Ryse wins most of the time but everything else it really doesn't so I don't see how you're trying to make it seem like Ryse is a generation ahead or that the gap is so massive between the two.

Angainor74230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

guys you know really what my concern is..? It's Crytek's first attempt to a third person action adventure hack n' slash... instead of trying to give feedback to Crytek to make the game better or at least not crucify this company for this first attempt to a new genre is what annoys me.. Are we gamers or a bunch of shitty fanboys..?

Kayant4230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

"instead of trying to give feedback to Crytek to make the game better or at least not crucify this company for this first attempt to a new genre is what annoys me"

The got their feedback at E3 from the press and from everyone what did they decide to do after that. They removed the overhead button prompts replaced them with a skull icon then made then they made the prompts into colour overlays around the enemies.

I don't know how much they could have changed the combat because it's a launch game but that's what they changed based on feedback.

seanpitt234230d ago

All you see in ryse is repetitive gameplay and fighting repetitive enemies I mean I must of killed this fat dude with a pony tail 150 times he just dosnt want to die lol it's just pure laziness they couldn't do more enemy character models.

Sarobi4230d ago

The problem is.. in first hand experience Ryse doesn't look as pretty as that still screenshot. I played from start to finish, and even watched my brother play through half of the game as well.. so I've stared at this game for a good amount of time to say that it has pretty graphics, they aren't exactly mind blowing.

Reverent4230d ago

Games have a tendency to look much better in still screenshots than in full motion gameplay.

I think this can be said for both KZ:SF and Ryse, but at least with KZ, you're gettings 60FPS of buttery smooth animation.

Bathyj4230d ago

as usual, whenever Ryse is shown off its never gameplay.

MrDead4230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

Apart from the faces Ryse isn't very impressive, small play areas, only 900p, after all the chest pounding all we we’re left with is nice faces.

Reverent4230d ago

Don't forget about the sub-30FPS frame rate.

maddskull4230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

this picture is before the downgrading of ryse
dont forget the ryse picture is a screen shot and probably edited while the killzone picture is from gameplay

Ju4229d ago (Edited 4229d ago )

Ryse shot is from a cut scene.

wishingW3L4230d ago

both of those screens are pre-rendered though.

Ju4229d ago (Edited 4229d ago )

KZ isn't. It's the opening scene, level 1. Which makes me wonder, KZ FMV sequences blend with the game much better. And those are usually off line rendered through the game engine played during loading sequences. But they are in a higher quality than in game, no doubt.

solidboss074230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

Well, to return the serve with an argument used against Uncharted, ect.... Ryse is a barely interactive movie, but it is visually good, not amazing, at launch.
I will believe the tech talk from Guerilla Games. Why? They were able to deliver 3D to an already graphically impressive game on PS3. If you don't like Killzone, you still should acknowledge any technical boundaries that they push.

ceballos77mx4229d ago

Very true thats the same comments thrown against heavy rain and Beyond, how ironic.

NeoTribe4229d ago

Dude your a idiot. That shot of ryse isn't even ingame. Reviews have already confirmed killzone to look better than ryse.

Visiblemarc4229d ago

Not sure how this is coming up, since the article isn't comparing the two games...but yeah Ryse is great at simulating faces...not sure how that weighs in to level design and pushing hardware, the differences are largely art direction based.

Also, for those who said titles wouldn't look better later in the gen... See! Of course they will!

kizzle324229d ago

Funny thing is that the Ryse screenshot is a cinematic cut scene...that screenshot from KZ is actual an in game cut scene during gameplay...move along

Evilsnuggle4229d ago (Edited 4229d ago )

Why does xoxo boiz always bring ryse in the mixes. When comparing graphics dont get me wrong .ryse graphics are good. But xoxo boiz always point at the same cut scene and never ryse actual game play. Ryse game play graphics get destroy by killzone sf infamous ss, deep down and the division game play graphics . On the bright side Ryse does have the best graphics on xbone to bad xbone graphics are weak sauce and sub 1080 p.

Section84228d ago

Ryse does look really good though.

Why is there no voice chat in this game? That is absolutely ridiculous. Other wise its a great game.

BoriboyShoGUN4230d ago (Edited 4230d ago )

no voice chat??? Man I havent even noticed that. Its crazy if its true, but now that you say that I cant recall speaking to anyone either ??

Reverent4230d ago

All the more reason to play with an organized team of friends with party chat on.

alexkoepp4229d ago

You have party chat now on a Sony platform? Welcome to last Gen folks!

BoriboyShoGUN4230d ago

Yeah I hear you, but i was actually trying to be more social this gen. Party chat is great but it really doesnt help the other players if four of you are keeping all the good intel to yourselves.

johndoe112114230d ago

If you form a party in multiplayer you can voice chat with other party members.

PlayStation Studios Could Embrace Decima Engine As Guerrilla Expands Developer Support

Some of Sony's first-party PlayStation Studios may be developing their future titles using Guerrilla Games' Decima engine.

twistedvoxel.com
RaidenBlack161d ago (Edited 161d ago )

Might be for studios which were using older engines or UE4 like Bend Studio.
Sony's big 5 studios' engines are all unique to some degree and I want it stay that way for future new games.
Remakes can be done using Decima if required like Bloodborne or Uncharted 1.
Imagine From Software embracing Decima for future titles.
But then again Until Dawn Remake was done using UE5, when the original was made using Decima.

VersusDMC161d ago

Maybe ease of use is what made it a better choice. And it was already tested by a another studio with kojima productions having shipped death stranding on Decima.

Eonjay161d ago

I wonder if this is for studios beyond SIE and KP. Decima has also proven itself of platforms beyond PS5 so I wonder how comfortable they would be with allowing non first party use it wherever?

Minute Man 721161d ago

They should use the Ready at Dawn engine

DarXyde161d ago

That engine is mighty impressive, even by today's standards. The cloth simulation and gun animations are absolutely chef's kiss.

But I think it's one of those very intensive engines that will choke the hell out of the hardware and you're looking at a short and linear but very detailed experience. More or less what you get from a UE5 game that really forces the hardware (e.g., Hell blade II).

For that reason, Naughty Dog's engine is probably more practical: still extremely detailed (albeit less so) but allows for a more wide-linear experience and you're still left in awe.

But if we're going open world, absolutely Decima.

porkChop161d ago

They don't own that engine, and Ready at Dawn doesn't even exist anymore.

anast161d ago

They already have embraced it along with some other engines.

They need to put that Decima engine to work for Killzone 5 or a remake of Killzone 2.

anast161d ago

This would be a cool gift to the fans.

jjb1981161d ago

I'm a huge Killzone 2 fan. It's my favorite shooter of all time and I wish they'd revive the IP. I know a remake of KZ2 would do very well. My original PSN friends I met were on KZ2 and and we formed a clan. I've been itching to get that 3 star badge. Only made it to 2-star.

Eonjay161d ago

Fun fact Decima IS the evolved version of the Killzone engine.

OlderGamer17160d ago

Noppe, its build from the ground up....

CrimsonIdol161d ago

A Killzone 2 remake where the controls are actually responsive could be cool.

mike32UK160d ago

The character has weight, it was a design choice which many people happened to like. You're probably too used to the floaty controls of COD

CrimsonIdol160d ago (Edited 160d ago )

yeah I remember that argument too. Then how that argument went away when they fixed it for the sequel. having massive input delay before anything happens due to technical issues isn't an artistic choice. It's good copium though

RaiderNation161d ago

Rather than a KZ2 remake, I'd rather see them do a KZ reboot! If they're going to do a remake, I'd rather see a PS5 remake of KZ Mercenary! Hands down one of the best Vita games and the 2nd best Killzone game in the series (after KZ2).

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT236d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus236d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius235d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better
