The lead architect of Sony's PlayStation 4 talks about the next generation gaming experience in this exclusive interview.
Mark Cerny is a smart guy.
yeah he definitely is. he has this aura about him that makes him easy to trust. very awesome guy.
He has thus aura ...haaaaaaaaa wow ok
whats so shocking about that? lol.
Aura is just is weird word to use. Unless you work with him or know him personally, there is no way you would get it from a video. Personally he creeps me out. Everytime I watch an interview with him I just think he gets creepier. Nothing against him though. It's me I know.
Seriously? I dont like gaming on my PC but PC gaming is not only more powerful but PS4 is all ready dated in terms of technology
Consoles are outdated the second they ship. There isn't much way around that these days.
That's true but 399$ is a good price for the system especially with the graphics capabilities that it has. Nexus 7 2013
Indeed it is.
PC's are outdated the day they ship too. Well 95% of them are.
True but consoles standardize the industrial as a whole . Just because they make more powerful computers and technology doesn't mean they're gonna get out to the populous to make an impact on the industry the way consoles do. Plus consoles now pretty much now hit that dividing line to where there's no difference to pc's but console are more dedicated to gaming
This is where PC gamers are wrong. For some reason, they think that the PS4 is using off the shelf parts. When in reality, it is using highly customized hardware. There is not one pc that allows the CPU and GPU to access the same pool of memory at the same time. Not one PC using the GPU as a CPU offset, for calculations. Not one PC graphics card that has 8GBs of GDDR5 RAM. Specialty chips for audio, the OS and its own pool of 2GBs of DDR3 RAM... On the same board. The list goes on, but I'm tired of these 1:1 comparisons, where they are comparing the PS4s internals to that of off the shelf PC parts. The PS4 is going to surprise many PC people, as to how powerful it actually is and to how close it will come to high/ max PC settings, once developers start taking advantage of its intricacies. Mantle was developed around PS4s own APIs, because of its efficiencies. Allowing developers to code closer to the metal, than ever before. That is saying something, when PC developers start mocking console code to more efficiently use system resources. Obviously Sony did something right. Im not sure why PC people get so miffed and feel the need to even enter console discussions. I guess they need some way to justify the thousands of dollars they've spent over the years, to play the same games console gamers have. Which makes no sense, considering that 99% of the time consoles were the lead development platform and the only advantage PC gamers had was resolution and framerate. With absolutely no changes to the core game itself. Im not saying that PCs arent more powerful, but to compare the PS4 to a 3-5 year old graphics card is absolutely ridiculous. Especially when it is running the same games that a high end PC is, at the same resolutions(for most people) and locked framerates. Sure, the textures my be a step down from the highest end graphics card, but it still looks good. I would rather power my console on, knowing the game is going to work when I load it... then to fight through installation, DRM and driver issues with every title released. Then again, maybe the fight to actually finally play the game... is part of the fun itself for PC gamers.
"the OS and its own pool of 2GBs of DDR3 RAM" It's 2 Gb (256 MB).
You are right about most things, but Im not sure what you mean by specialty audio chips. Litterally almost all ATX motherboards have build in audio chip, and you can get custom or if you will HIGH end audio cards that typically uses a PCI slot. And a PCI card means aworld of difference with the right setup. Consoles doesnt compare to pc's 1:1 with hardware as they are more efficient as you say. Overhead is about non existant and you can code to the metal when the highly optimized API doesnt cut it wether it is to gain performance or add a feature like say Tesselation in wich the ps3 doesnt support natively in its API but GT6 is doing it anyways. And GB=/= Gb. 8bit = 1Byte.
I'm a Pc gamer and a Playstation gamer.....as long as a 7- year old console can produce a game like Last of Us there will be people buying them. PC takes more money and it never comes up with such brilliant exclusives as consoles do.Only area where Pc really shines are strategy games - that's why I have a gaming PC.
I agree, but its just annoying having Dev tlk about how Great and Powerful it is, Its really nt that powerful, At launch Sony is having games that arent running a 1080p @ 60FPS, so what will future games run at?
Grammar check. All ready = already dated
And don't forget that if you create a gaming pc with ps3 specs you wouldn't be able to run a game like gta v . So this tells you that consoles take advantage of all the power because it focus on the gaming . So we all should know that ps4 is stronger then you think . Specs won't show ps4 power , games will and time will tell.. But i agree with you in a different way , PS4 should have been more stronger then this but if you consider people in 2006 complained about the price of ps3 without caring about the specs , sony learned that it would be useless to push specs forward any more because it costs them a lot without any positive feedback from neither people and developers. That's why i think the ps4 is awesome with that price even though i hate the fact that they sacrificed the future for present.. Edit : Even cerny in this video said that the ps4 is not about technology , it's about the return of ps1/2 roots. Which means easier to develop for and focus on gaming innovation.

Awful man. Please stop.
When do we start calling it current gen? :P
I guess the 22nd of November. Nexus 7 2013
When the Xbox One is released.
Stop talking about it and make an actual next gen game! You would think of all people, he'd make the most amazing example of a next gen game, instead he makes Knack!
Are you one of those people who say games are rubbish before you had any intention of actually, you know, playing it? Thought so.
His game is not a demo of specs , I'm not interested in knack too but i for one didn't took the wrong idea. He just wanted to create something similar to crash. And he did but people don't look at it this way sadly .
I think Mark Cerny is not only smart but a genius and innovator.
I can listen to this guy all day errday. Want him to read me bedtime stories & poems in his soothing voice
ughhh!...that's kinda mr.rogerish.
