Mutli-Platform Games May Not Look Better on PlayStation 4

Eskimo Press: "One of the most overlooked reports of last year was when Microsoft's Xbox 360 release policy was revealed. It forbids developers to do timed exclusives with any other company, release extra features on disc, and also stipulates that all multi-platform games must not look better on any other console. What exactly does this mean?"

Huh? Both BF4 and Cod ghosts have a resolution advantage on PS4 and digital foundry already stated BF4 is superior on PS4. This would be directly opposite of Microsofts "policy"

FiLTHY ESKiMO4241d ago

Digital Foundry do their comparisons on a test PS4 unit, which runs review/developer codes. The game is rendered in 1080p and then is scaled down for the retail version so that they do not violate the Microsoft's policy.

iamnsuperman4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So review copies are at a higher res than retail copies. Does that really make sense to you? because to me that makes as much sense as taking a photo with a potato. You cant review something the public never experiences/gets a worse copy

@ Article

"Titles for Xbox 360 must ship at least simultaneously with other video game platform, and must have at least feature and content [graphics and game-play] parity on-disc with the other video game platform versions in all regions where the title is available"

You can't just put square brackets in when the quote doesn't explicitly say that. A square bracket is used like this Titles [for the Xbox 360].......if the word Xbox 360 isn't used but is found in the 360 policy list. Feature and content doesn't necessarily mean graphical fidelity. The content is still there. It just may not be as good.

Here is the original unedited quote
"Titles for Xbox 360 must ship at least simultaneously with other video game platform, and must have at least feature and content parity on-disc with the other video game platform versions in all regions where the title is available"

Source: http://www.oxm.co.uk/63096/...

It also goes on to say if the conditions are not met Microsoft has the right to not allow the content on their system but in what planet would that happen. Consoles only exist because of the software. The third parties hold the power

Enemy4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

No, they aren't scaled down for retail. Your comment, no offense, makes no sense at all. If the developers announce 1080p native, then that's what they'll be in retail.

Parity starts early in development, and they know before the game is released that it's going to be the same on both consoles. From early stages, they begin gimping one version to meet the other's "full potential", which is why Microsoft is frowned upon with their ridiculous, butthurt policies.

They would literally tell you to keep your game off their console if it looks too much better on PS4. After hearing about Ghosts, BF4, and next up AC: Black Flag, they're probably going to enforce it even further. We'll see.

FiLTHY ESKiMO4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

iamsuperman

The game was rendered in 1080p. Review codes, and I am not talking about the promos they send out to smaller presses, come freshly from the developers and are usually for testing but also used for reviews in some instances. If the game was rendered at 1080p then the review code would display the game that way.

The retail codes require a day one patch to download the high resolution textures. This is evidence that the final texture pack was not on disc and was not violating Microsoft's multi-platform policy.

Game features and content must be on parity. This applies to game assets like textures.

scott1824241d ago

That's a shame that multiplat games wont take full advantage of the PS4 and scaled down to match Microsoft's, because of their ridiculous policy. It's smart on Microsoft's part because they can spend less on hardware and still have games look similar.

Gozer4241d ago

This article is flat wrong. The contract stipulates that games must be the same as other platforms. Meaning it must have the same features, not that it must be the same graphically.

gaffyh4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

Wow, yet again, another complete "pulled out of someone's ass" story. So Multiplatforms won't look better because MS' Xbox 360 policy was, and I quote:

"Titles for Xbox 360 must ship at least simultaneously with other video game platform, and must have at least feature and content parity on-disc with the other video game platform versions in all regions where the title is available."

Content parity =/= graphical parity. This article is completely fake, and is based solely on assumption. There is no such thing as review build being better looking that a promo build, in fact it's most likely the opposite. The review builds tend to be much much buggier than final builds, and the PS4 test kits are exactly the same spec as final PS4 hardware. So total BS basically.

It again shows as complete BS when you look at the PS3 games that have exclusive content over Xbox 360 games e.g. AC3 had additional 60 mins of gameplay, as does AC4, and Watch Dogs I believe. So is MS not going to allow these to be published? Give me a break.

PLASTICA-MAN4241d ago

Never seen bad reviews for PS4 lanuch games, downgrading the PS4 versions of multiplatform games, sabotaging the PS4 plant itself and then mocking up the "greatness awaits" solgan. I don't see why this don't happen to other camp. Sony, you are so honest, and that is why you always get my respect, even with your mistakes, you always keep the competetion so clean.

FamilyGuy4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

Holy sh.. it's really still in effect, how disappointing.

"This is also the reason why you will notice exclusive PlayStation content to only be available as DLC. Activision, and other developers, will the same method to patch the PlayStation 4 version post-launch to unlock higher resolution textures and allow the game run in its native resolution; 1080p."

I'm glad developers found a loophole around some of this BS but that still completely sucks. If you can't get online to get the patch then you're outta luck on having the copy you were meant to. Now that 1080p CoD patch makes more sense.

MS should just get out of gaming, they aren't even calling the X1 a gaming console anymore. It's advertised as an all in one entertainment device so why hold back a true gaming console like this? If a large group of publishers stood up against this policy MS would be forced to remove it or risk losing a bunch of exclusives to the PS4 which would put them in a bad position. Devs would have to rally together on this though because if it's only one or two games MS will shrug it off.

TheGreatAndPowerful4241d ago

BF4, Need for Speed, COD:G, AC4 all look/run better on PS4 so why does the author think that this little trend will change in the future?

SITH4241d ago

Oh please, this is clearly speculation as even the article suggests. And the Xbox one will easily be on par with the PS4 when the games are properly optimized to run on it. Forza 5 is a prime example of an optimized game for the Xbox one. BF4 looks good on Xbox one, because that is how it was made, not because the ps4 version was held back.

thekhurg4240d ago

This article is a click-bait. This policy is no longer in place:

Assassin's Creed 4 has Sony timed exclusive content.
Destiny has Sony timed exclusive content.
Diablo 3 has Sony exclusive content.
Watch Dogs has Sony timed exclusive content.

BF4 looks better on PS4.
CoD looks better on PS4.

News sites like this should be shut down for posting nonsense, users that link these should have their rights removed from N4G.

BF4(slide red bar)
https://googledrive.com/hos...

PS4
http://ghosts-comparison.s3...

XB1
http://ghosts-comparison.s3...

Media been caught not telling the truth lately.

@FiLTHY ESKiMO

No just No. A pixel counter counted IGN's COD video after IGN was praising 1080p on PS4 and then after Eurogamer, trying to save face for doing the same thing after being told by devs it wasn't 1080p.
Only then did IGN try to say they had the 1080p version(took the original video down and then claimed they had the 1080p version the whole time. If IGN didn't lie this would have destroyed IGN)

Thousands of people thought BF4 on XB1 looked better on every video shown despite the strange claims by certain media with exclusive access to PS4 coverage.

XB1 with exclusive BF4 DLC, a MSFT partnership and the XB1 being the showcase for BF4 makes me, IMO think the XB1 version was the primary console version then the rest a work in progress.

Funny certain gaming media that had exclusive PS4/Sony pre launch coverage rights claimed the XB1 versions, being sharper and more vivid with better textures was some sort of *anomaly* *over saturation* *over sharpening* *overdone contrast* LOL

XBOX1 will shine it's the most powerful console ever made. Not talking GPU for only gaming but the overall hardware and the entire multi media experience. Built from the ground up for cloud compute over 16 gigs of various memory, off loading processors, Hyper-visor and Move Engines, more powerful CPU and advanced GPU.

Anyways I don't think PS4 gamers should be worried about this right now, there are more pressing issues in PlayStation land.

FiLTHY ESKiMO4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

It was Infinity Ward that first tweeted that Ghosts would run at 1080p native on the PlayStation 4.

Anyone who has a test code for Call of Duty: Ghosts will see the game in 1080p. The retail version was stripped of the high resolution textures -- day one patch for 1080p was then confirmed.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

The test units are definitely running at 1080p native. Even Metro UK reported this.

DoesUs4241d ago

WOW! You are in full defence mode. XB1 is inferior. Multiplats on the whole are an awful lot better on PS4.

GarrusVakarian4241d ago (Edited 4241d ago )

You still using that BF4 slider? Haha, JackFrags has MULTIPLE BF4 videos dude....just go to his YouTube channel or download the direct feed from eurogamer to see the PS4 version looks better. He even says it himself and he is a PC gamer and probably the least biased person ive seen on the internet.

Your pathetic BF4 slider you keep posting pales in comparison to direct feed footage i have on my PS3 from both next gen consoles that clearly show the PS4 NOT looking washed out or blurry whatsoever but instead shows the PS4 version to have vivid colours, deep blacks and an overall sharper image due to the 900p resolution.

This is only the beginning and already we see multiplats looking better on the PS4.....its only going to get more obvious as time goes on.

Next week various unbiased news sites can take a proper look at X1 games and compare them with other platforms.

Maybe by then we can see if those games on 720p look better, or not, then the 1080p versions.

Faztkiller4241d ago

I think this would only effects smaller publishers and devs cause Microsoft is not going to tell Activision EA or Ubisoft that they can't put their game on the Xbox cause that would be a death sentence for Xbox. If one of those publishers pulled support no one would buy the system.

osprey194241d ago

Actually infinity ward recently said they had to downgrade the resolution of ghosts from native 1080p to 1080 upscaled due to the inconsistent frame rate. It came straight from the horses mouth.

I am a little surprised this hasn't gotten a lot of attention lately. This policy is limiting multi-platform titles to the Xbox's potential. :S

The loophole that companies are using is giving the PS4 "DLC" in the form of day one patches which unlock the higher resolution.

Rumors of Turn 10 being either shut down or hit with massive lay offs is on the horizon.

The issue is MS will do something right only to do something very, very wrong. And they do this what seems calculative at this point. Doesn't matter what they do the Investors and leadership want more and more money an endless bottomless pit of purr insatiable greed. A company that acts like it's broke or hurting is what really, really infuriates me. They've surpassed apple again well over 3 trillion who acts like they're a million dollar company is fk stupid. Pivots and changes for no reason and can't do things for more than a year with out a pivot or changing their metrics.

"just like Sony"

Gosh you're insufferable, not everything needs to be both-sides'd. Sony's had layoffs, but nothing like what Microsoft has been doing and is continuing to do.

CrimsonWing694d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I mean, no offense, but this is why you’re not some corporate business person running a major corporation. Big profits don’t mean jobs are safe. Do you understand why things like this happen:

Cutting jobs to maintain or increase profitability, especially in underperforming divisions like parts of Xbox like other gaming divisions.

Corporate restructuring and relocating resources for strategic stability in ever changing markets and consumer behaviors.

Investor expectations and optimizing operations to maintain investor confidence. Whatever boosts stock prices and improves future margins.

And there’s many other factors at play. It’s never as simple as business doing well, everyone’s safe. That’s just you not understanding at all how corporations work and have been working since the beginning. This isn’t something that’s specific to Xbox, you can bet your ass Sony and Nintendo do this and if it’s not clear by now, game development is not a stable job nor has it ever been for many. A lot of developers are contractors and guess what happens when a project is done?

Ganif3d ago

Nintendo said they have no plans for layoffs, and you can't seriously claim that the scale of Sony's layoffs most of which involved Bungie which is self managed as even close to the same scale as what Microsoft has done since they purchased Zenimax. And that significantly less layoffs would have happened if those publishers had stayed independent. Keep in mind that much of these layoffs have been due to redundancies specifically related to these buyouts.

CrimsonWing693d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@Ganif

Nintendo:

https://gamerant.com/ninten...

Sony:

https://gamerant.com/playst...

https://techxplore.com/news...

I don’t think it’s realistic to treat Sony’s layoffs as somehow outside the norm for the industry right now. Even if Bungie is self-managed, Sony’s cuts went far beyond that like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, London Studio being shut down completely, and multiple teams across the globe took hits. These weren’t just minor adjustments.

Nintendo, I had to look up and you’re right. They seem to be an outlier, but rest assured at some point it happens. And even then there’s been layoffs, albeit a smaller amount and contractors.

Would fewer layoffs have happened if studios from acquisitions stayed independent? Maybe. But even independents have been hit hard and look at what’s happened with Embracer’s fallout, or smaller devs like Digic, Roll7, or Volition. This isn’t just a “Microsoft problem” or strictly tied to acquisitions; it’s a broader correction happening across the whole industry, and unfortunately, layoffs are a big part of that process right now.

Ganif3d ago

From your article:

"According to reports, Nintendo of America restructured its testing operations, leading to layoffs of about 120 contractors, part of a strategy for global integration.

Nintendo of America, publisher of iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda, is shifting some contractors to full-time roles for better development integration."

Contractors are not employees, and even if you want to count them as that, it's 120 people vs around 7500 since Microsoft purchased Zenimax.

In an era of game industry layoffs, Nintendo is hiring more people

Nintendo CEO’s refusal to layoff staff goes viral following industry-wide cuts
"Satoru Iwata took pay cuts to ensure staff didn’t have to be let go"
https://www.nme.com/news/ga...

And as for Sony you're comparing less than 1000 total jobs to an estimated7500

Has the industry faced layoffs, yes, but that still doesn't account for the mass layoffs due to redundancies that was easily predictable, or that fact that at least 1/3 of Microsoft's layoffs and studio closures happened before the industry downturn.

Sony Faces Class Action in the Netherlands Over Allegedly Inflated PlayStation Store Prices

Mass Damage & Consumer Foundation in the Netherlands has filed a class action against Sony for inflating PlayStation Store prices.

dveio4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

My personal opinion:

Manufacturers and publishers have indeed inflated the industry.

From $700 million development costs for games like Call of Duty, to digital (store) prices for games and DLCs, online multiplayer fees on consoles (why can you play Helldivers 2 online for free on PC but not consoles?) or still preventing sell/lend digitally purchased games.

Sometime in the future, this bubble will collapse.

They should know better, but they just can't help themselves and suck even the last penny out of our wallets.

BeHunted3d ago

Because Sony knows people will be forced to pay those prices for single player and multiplayer games, not everyone prefers PC gaming. Sony also has a monopoly on PlayStation digital games. In 2019, they stopped allowing retailers and game key sellers to sell PlayStation digital games, making them available only through the official PlayStation Store

anast4d ago

The Dutch gov. wants a piece of the pie.

Eonjay3d ago

They should be suing the individual publishers increasing the prices to $80 instead of suing the store. There are plenty of publishers still selling game for like $50 with much success (like E33). But this proves that the publishers are the ones setting the prices.... so again nothing changes because they aren't even going after the main offender. How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD? Sony being the number one store in the market doesn't mean that publisher have to charge us an arm and a leg. Again the industry is laughing at us because consumers never get real representation. Just these fake platitudes that are meaningless.

BeHunted3d ago

"How is suing Sony going to make Microsoft not charge $80 for the next COD"

Because Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, I can purchase Call of Duty at a huge discount from CDKeys or other gaming retailers. The only way to purchase digital PlayStation games is through the PlayStation Store.
