PS4: How To Upgrade The Hard Drive Up To A Whopping 2TB The Easy Way

Although the new PlayStation 4 is super exciting and encourages you to download games, music, movies and more to the internal storage, it is perhaps a little surprising that the hard drive that comes with the console has only 500GB of space. In fact, reports suggest that the system software takes up a massive 98GB of that, so you really only have 402GB to play with.

I can't find a 2TB to order online :(

Transporter474237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

Guess its too thick. When i find one i'll link it.

Sarcasm4237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

You just linked a 1TB HDD...

Edit: Much better :)

ipach4237d ago

too thick. 9.5mm max height for PS4

Ju4237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

Link is a 1TB drive. Newegg has 1. But not sure if it fits. Amazon has 1.5TB with 9.5mm http://www.amazon.com/HGST-...

Anarki4237d ago

So 2TB is the maximum?

ziggurcat4237d ago

@ ipach:

apparently they increased it to 12.5mm

JimmyLmao4237d ago

here... 2TB PS4 compatible internal HDD

http://gizmodo.com/the-worl...

it is only very new, not sure if it is available for purchase just yet

UltimateMaster4237d ago

Currently, only 1.5Tb are accepted.
However, Seagate is working on a 2Tb that would fit in a PS4.
It's set to be released soon. just google: N4G 2Tb HDD PS4

Dirtnapstor4236d ago

They should allow for an external hard drive. As soon as you start swapping, you have to redownload everything every time. Kind of a pain. Treat the externals like a ginormous flash drive.

You don't need it just buy a 1TB and you will be good. 2TB is to much and a waste of money. 1TB will fit about 25-30 games the 500GB fit 12-15 games. I just got my 1TB to put in my PS4, it was $71 with SAH I only paid $84 for my 1TB from Amazon.

superterabyte4237d ago

Say the average games 50GB in size. You can fit 20 games on 1TB. That's not enough.

Blacksand14237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

You not going to keep your games after you beat them most people trade them in, so 1tb is enough.

PS4, Xbox One hard drives will only fit 12 full-sized games. If you know basic math 12+12=24 if you have a 1tb.

Sveritas4231d ago

Thank you for the guide Studio, 1TB Seagate it is for me!

I_am_Batman4237d ago

I think I'll keep the 500GB in there as long as possible so that the upgrade will actually be worth.

dragonopt14237d ago

Already got my SSD Hybrid 1TB sitting here for tomorrow, was only $100 on Amazon.

0ut1awed4237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

But thee SSD cache portion of the drive is only 8GB.

I'm not sure how beneficial it will be with 50GB games. Although $100 is pretty close to a standard laptop drive anyways so I guess it can't hurt.

Or maybe it can... 7 out of the last 10 reviews on newegg rate that drive horribly. Most of those were DOAs and failures soon after. Be wary.

Sarcasm4237d ago

8GB could be sufficient. How SSHD's work is it caches the most commonly used files, at least on Windows.

I'm not entirely sure an SSHD will work on the PS4 unless Sony designed it to partition files like a PC, which I don't think it does. I could be wrong.

jhoward5854237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

If the 50 GB file is one file combined in to one major file or a few files the cache size won't matter much.

cache is used as a management system, the more pieces of files you have the more cache is needed which help make data move faster.

Ex if you test 2 hard drive. One has 8 mb cache, and the other has 16 gb cache and you're transferring one big files you won't see much any different in transfer speed between both hard drive.

Ju4237d ago

Yeah, but that makes only sense if you have a lot of small files you use frequently. Games usually don't work that way. They either have a huge image the stream from or they do not swap in small repeatedly files. But I have no idea but would be curious to see if it actually works. I think I'd rather go for more capacity than hybrid on the PS4. I'd love to have a full SSD. Have one in my PC and would never switch back. But not available in a size one can afford.

XxGOWxX4237d ago

Unless sony have said otherwise the ps4 wouldnt even know its an ssd therefore wouldnt manage it correctly. a proper ssd would still give you the general speed but no trim etc.

Yeah I'm going to hold off a bit to install a new hard drive. I want to get in and go off in the next gen as fast and hard as possible. I waited too long to wait more.

Sarcasm4237d ago

Whoever is upgrading, keep in mind the PS4 only supports Sata II, so don't bother spending more on Sata III. And go for a 7200rpm drive since the stock PS4 one is 5400rpm.

despair4237d ago

Was it confirmed, all we know is the hdd included is sata II not if it supports up to sata III. It may have been done like that to save costs.

Angeljuice4237d ago

7200 rpm drives produce a lot more heat than 5400 rpm drives. Your PS4 will get hotter if you use one (how much of a problem that causes remains to be seen).

Sarcasm4237d ago (Edited 4237d ago )

True, but plenty of people put a 7200rpm drive in a PS3 slim and had no issues. And the PS4 only puts out a mere 45C at full gaming load and using the UI at the same time with BOTH the CPU and GPU.

To put it in perspective, my GTX 660SC hits 70C during gaming and my overlocked i7 is 60-65C with a closed loop water cooling.

You can put your hands on 45C and not get burned. Heat is a non-issue thankfully.

AceBlazer134237d ago

sony says anything outside what they recommend falls on you. they warn you that 7200rpm produces more heat and if this causes anything it's all you.

Sarcasm4237d ago

Yes it has been confirmed to work on the PS4, but the PS4 itself is only going to utilize Sata 2 speeds. So it's basically sort of a waste to invest in Sata 3 if it doesn't improve performance.
