Polygon’s Bias Rears its Ugly Head (Again) at Killzone: Shadow Fall

Angie Santiago writes from SpawnFirst: "Oh boy. It seems Polygon is at it again with their bias. We previously reported that their review score of The Last of Us was lower than it deserved, and it seems they’ve done it again except, this time, it’s an even lower score for a game that has similarly high expectations like The Last of Us – we’re talking about their review for Killzone: Shadow Fall."

If the reviewer doesn't like the game then they give it a low score, why are people so antsy about numbers people give to a game, get over it.

@Vojkan - so only people that like the game should review them? That's backwards. Also if it's their first time playing a game they might like it so your point is moot.

-Foxtrot4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

It's not about numbers, it's about what that person has said in the review which reflects on the overall number. Thats why people get p***** off with reviews these days, reviewers end up contradicting themselves in the reviews or even worse things. Look at COD Ghosts at IGN, an 8.8 for the same boring game yet Killzone and Battlefield 4 get 8.

Polygon say so much crap in their reviews which either don't make sense, go against what other reviews have said or exaggerates stuff...not to mention they could say positive things and still give it a low score.

It might be opinion but I just can't believe for a second they thought Last of Us was that bad, they mainly blamed it on silly things like weapon sway despite the fact it's upgradable in the game.

At times it feels like they are doing it for the sake of it and with the money they took of MS...I'm sorry but something is up there.

MestreRothN4G4238d ago

They ARE doing it for the sake of it.

darthv724238d ago

i dont let reviews of games sway me one bit. i know that everyone approaches these things with a certain perspective and that each persons perspective is their own.

I have to play for myself to know if its something that holds my attention. Now, having been a fan of the KZ series i have to play this new one simply out of my previous experience with the other games. I havent been let down yet, I doubt this will be the straw either.

as for polygon, its like their review was simply to stir crap. i bet they really did enjoy it but keeping in the mood to stir the crap they give it a crap review.

Much like those who hold a grudge against a certain platform to give a game like halo a bad review on metacritic. Not because they didnt like the game but that they just want to bring down the giant.

allformats4238d ago

Microsoft gave polygon $750,000 to startup.

That's all you need to know.

brometheos4238d ago

Exactly. I remember one reviewer saying TLOU deserved an 8/10 since you couldn't shoot the doctor in the foot at the end, lol WTF.

Mike134nl4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

Kinda strange that they gave knack a 6 witch is on the mark when looking at the average on metacritics.
Cannot really imagine knack beeing better than killzone a 5. Polygon did seem to like resogun which they gave a 8.5.

Eonjay4238d ago

Yes Polygon gave Knack a higher score than Killzone. Something is wrong with them. Ask yourself, do you really trust their judgement? Does it reflect yours?

RIP_Weazel4238d ago

..the thing is, Gies, who wrote the review is an ACTIVE killzone hater! Back in Feb he was tweeting about the fact that he didnt want to see another Killzone!

-Foxtrot4238d ago

You know what I find even sadder guys...the fact that the users in the comment section on Polygon are just going along with it.

I mean not one person has mentioned the guy who reviewed it doesn't like Killzone anyway and not one person has said anything about how they always mark PS games down when they have to.

Brainwashed fools

solidjun54238d ago

@RIP_Weazel Yep. That's why I think any negative publicity is good publicity. So how do you create that? Give the review to the guy who hates everything related to KZ. At some point, it'll catch up to them. When? I don't know.

But they will catch a lot of flack is they are not consistent with the X1 reviews.

Irishguy954238d ago

You just have to laugh at Polygon. I personally their Bullshit should be banned from N4G.

Saigon4238d ago

Sounds like they are the new 1up.com

NarooN4238d ago

Polygon is trash anyway, it's literally just Kotaku 2.0, even has some ex-Kotaku staff. They do the same nonsense as Kotaku does -- over-sensationalist articles, horribly misleading titles, click-baiting, blatant lies and misinformation spreading, etc.

Because of this http://i.imgur.com/SnauxLw....

That's from back in the February. If he doesn't like KZ then he should not review it. His history with PS is well known. Just go and find his posts on NEoGaf from early this year and how he defended MS with his "secret source" BS. He even promised to give 10 bucks to some guy if he was wrong (can't remember about what) it turned out he was wrong and never gave money. Dude gave 9.5 to HALO 4, I mean please.
Polygon give bad reviews to PS exclusives. They gave TLOU 7.5.
They got 700k from MS last year, no joke they are sponsored by MS.
Don't give me that crap that it is just an opinion and they are pros. Most of these gaming journalist are bunch of fanboy nerds that would never make it in real journalism.
So where there is smoke, there most likely fire.
Geis should not have reviewed KZ. He is the biggest douche in gaming and MS fanboy. Fuk of Polygon

@HOLYDUCK
No, but you should have interest in the franchise. I would never review something like WOW or DOTA. Don't have the interest for them and would not give them a fair share. That is called being pro. Not reviewing game on purpose of giving it poor score just cuz you know..you can

Statix4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

So they gave the Killzone reviewing duties to a guy who openly admits to hating Killzone? Smart.

What's next, Polygon? Letting someone who doesn't watch sports review NBA 2k14?

seanpitt234238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

Bubble for you! Well said. What are the chances he gives dead rising 3 a 9 or 10 lol.

Vojkan4238d ago

@statix
Next is to review the console when it is impossible to properly review it this early (they already did and gave it 7.5 ...ok) and then to act stupid and pretend how PS4 is exclusive games machine and say that there are no games atm. O wait they did that as well.
Forget better running multi platform games you can play those on current gen X1 on 720p...signed Polygon.

Taislin4238d ago

As has been said before here in the comments, Polygon tends to review games that are actually preety good with a preety bad score. IMO I don´t trust them like I used to. Just to quote Foxtrot "Last of Us Ni No Kuni
Puppeteer Dragon's Crown" They gave bad to average score to these games, and I find them all to be very enjoyable, and at least an 8. I know it´s just my opinion, but I´m startiing to see a trend here.

airsick74233d ago

yeah, the trend is those are all Sony exclusives.

THE-COMMANDER4238d ago

We are talking about a biased person here, he is not worthy to review the game.

T24238d ago

This article is the reason they do it . Site hits nothing more ...always skip to comments and downvote trash site ... My gf could ez write better reviews than this clown . He cant even play shooters

monkeyDzoro4238d ago

If hte reviewer doesnt LIKE the game THEN he says : "I dont like it". But the fact that he doesnt like it implies it's a bad game. And 5/10 --> very average. Compared to CoD/BF4/Crysis, KZSF is way ahead.

dcj05244238d ago

BF4 imo is very advanced. Only other game close to it is battlefront.

MrDead4238d ago

Gives the site plenty of attention that it wouldn't otherwise receive, they just want hits and yet again they have been very successful.

I can see why people think they are bias too, have a look who sponsored them http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

izumo_lee4238d ago

There's a difference when being professional & being a fanboy when reviewing & clearly Arthur Geis from Polygon was being a fanboy.

The whole review was an angry rant with nothing noteworthy for the reader to understand or gauge about the game that is being reviewed.

Look at their review for SimCity an unplayable mess of a game. Day one they gave the game a 9. The changed it to a 8 & finally giving the game the score it ACTUALLY deserved a 4 way later.

That alone tells you there is something up with Polygon. Whether there is an agenda or not there is definitely an issue.

SweetIvy4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

Let's be honest though, opinions may be opinions but for a game to get a 5 score it should be basically unplayable as in: "plagued by bugs, frame-rate issues" and so on.
If something works maybe it won't shine but a 5 means "insufficient".

If you make an English essay that doesn't say anything brilliant but it's written in good English you still get a 6 or 7. You will never get a 5.

So, basically, giving 5 to a game such as KZ even if it is the worst in the series it's just plain silly.

sAVAge_bEaST4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

It's Polygon, and it's not a coincidence, or a fluke,,.. It's a reoccurring theme with them, anything playstation. They should just re-name the website to Polygonalxbox.

pivotplease4238d ago

Go eat a twinkie HolyDuck.

If you worked for two years on something arguably artistic, would you not be upset if some big acne covered deuce came along and dismissed your project as a 50 (a fail in my school)? This number is not only an insult, but since it comes from a reviewer, it has bearing on the public's perception of your work. This is only made into a more severe wound if the low score is unjustified.

fenome4238d ago

Exactly, he went in with preconceived notions and knew full well he was going to bash it before he even popped the disc in. Polygon gave him the review knowing full well he wasn't going in with an open mind about it.

His voice gets heard, he has sway, and he gets paid. This is totally unacceptable and brings up the word "Slander" in my mind. Where the hell is the integrity in this industry? No wonder nobody takes it seriously.

PSjesus4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

That's the problem if he isn't fan of the genre or the company he shouldn't review it period,it's journalism not a biased personal opinion like any one else....that's the why gaming journalism should change Jim Starling said on Beyond review i don't like this type of genre or any David's Cage games but i have to review it because it's not my opinion and we cant choose the games we want review .... this wrong and Polygon like many sites desperate for hits like their The last of us review .... these people who gave junk like dead space 3 9.5

MizTv4238d ago

I bet they give ryse a 9 lol

Cloudyday714238d ago

I'm getting an Xbox One at launch because it has the games I want and I love the Xbox ecosystem. Despite this I know the PS4 is great designed console and Mark Cerny made a lot of excellent engineering decisions which have been praised by many developers this year. So I was honestly expecting the PS4 to get nearly top scores everywhere. I saw some Brit website gave it 5/5.

But even me with my preference for the Xbox can see that the 7.5 from Polygon is... surprising! LOL. Microsoft financed the creation of the website and gives them yearly extras and this probably affects editorial.

But whilst the Polygon staff know they are on the pay wage no person has put their name to the review because they don't want to be accountable.

So no matter how good the PS4 is Microsoft will win because they can pay for big websites to give them better grades. Now wait for the ultimate troll.. Xbox One will be given 8 out of 10. Ha ha Ha I love you Microsoft/Polygon! :)

XboxFun4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

So if MS pays review sites for bad scores according to the insiders of N4G. Does this mean Sony pays other websites for good reviews?

Just saying, it seems the conspiracies just go one way and not the other.

snp4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

I don't know about the whole 'paid' part of - and have less than enough interest in Polygon's history to read it - but if a site does have a consistent opinion at odds with the majority, in a negative sense, or even a positive sense, and this anomaly seems to be directed at one particular platform... i think there's reasons to question them. Their motives, competency, relevance.. all or any of it.

I've got no interest in bagging Polygon, but i will say with reviews like 6.5 for Ni No Kuni, or 7.5 for The Last of Us, 6.5 for Dragons Crown etc.. i have little use for them. Whether it's bias, bribery or simple offbeat opinions that happen to usually go against Sony products by pure chance.. their reviews are so unrepresentative of my own feelings of those games, i'm almost inclined to believe i'll probably usually feel the 'opposite' about a (Playstation) game of whatever it is they do.

kenshiro1004238d ago

That's not the point but nice job trying to derail the discussion./s

solar4238d ago

aquamala4238d ago

I've never seen console gamers whine about review scores of multi platform games either, it's always the exclusives

solar4238d ago

Ya they just argue if one console gets .2 more then the other

OrangePowerz4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

reviewers are supposed to review games on how good they are not on how much they personally like the type of game, genre, story or so on.

Forrest Gump as example is a great movie. Give it to someone who doesn`t like it`s story or that kind of things and that person gives the movie a 2 out of 5 because it`s not his cup of tea. Would that be a valid score that represents the quality of the movie? No it wouldn`t, because it`s a good movie and the reviewer judged it simply on the fact what he/she likes.

It`s like the review for the Last of Us with complains that the game is too depressing or the GTA 5 review some other side did giving it a low score because the characters are not nice guys. That doesn`t reflect the quality because those things are completely intentional and on purpose. You are not supposed to be happy and smile while playing TLoU or that the Franklin, Michael and Trevor are nice guys.

They gave it a 5 because it doesn`t do anything new in the FPS genre and state that as the biggest problem of the game. BF4 get`s a 7.5 and the anual CoD a 7, now I wonder what the hell those games have new that makes those games so much better compared to Killzone besides of the fact that the reviewer isn`t a fan of Killzone.

I just need to read the review of Ni No Kuni and have to wonder if they have anybody employed who likes games at all or if they always give games to review to people who hate the Genre/Franchise or who don`t know how to play games.

And what did they have to say about the GAMES console? It focuses too much on games and has no games. I have 5-7 games on my list to buy on launch without including any indie games and they come around with it doesn`t have enough games?

LoveOfTheGame4238d ago

That logic is kind of flawed.

What if most people gave Forest Gump a 2/5, the movie itself hasn't changed, but people's perception of it has. Is it still a great movie?

You can't just say what is and isn't good/great. That same logic could be applied to only people who hated comedies got to review Goodburger, thus Goodburger is the best movie ever.

OrangePowerz4238d ago

It`s not flawed, movie reviewers are more professional than some game reviewers so you won`t get to the point where big sites give a movie bad reviews because it`s not their cup of tea even tough the quality of the movie is high.

wishingW3L4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

because they have rated totally unplayable games much higher. That's beyond an opinion at this point. On top of it, look how their editors are trashing the franchise on Twitter! Polygon are mad.

Anon19744238d ago

Whether they meant their review or not, one thing is for sure...you can bet their website is getting a tonne of hits.

Personally, over the years I find reviewers I trust who's opinions I find more often then not match up with my own and I use them. Over the years I've learned which sites just seem to be reviewing for hits and I ignore them. If you think you've found a site you suspect is doing the same, don't give them your hits. If the game is rigged, don't play. There are plenty of sites out there that still offer honest opinions as gamers that don't need to resort to negative press to drive hits.

FamilyGuy4238d ago

Polygon attacks the big, highly anticipated PS exclusives, not the regular ones. If a PS exclusive is [expected] to receive lots of high scores and praise Polygon attacks it with a review filled with all the negative aspects it can muster. It doesn't bother mentioning many of the positives so that their low score then seem justifiable.

They are fully biased and very particular in the games they attack. Expect Infamous SS, another highly anticipated title to get a score far below average too. Expect DriveClub, with its more tempered anticipation, to get something closer to what other reviewers give it.

Quot me on this, this is how they operate.

popup4238d ago

I expect honesty. I get deceit and manipulation.

All the more determined NOT to buy an XBox One now. You failed Polygon!

Vojkan4238d ago

AlexanderNevermind4238d ago

@Abriael

A full heaping of both.

GrandTheftZamboni4238d ago

"I'm still undecided if some of their reviews are actual fruit of bias, or just of the attention whorish need of being "different."

It's probably both.

-Foxtrot4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

I feel like they do it when they have to

Last of Us came out in June, State of Decay came out in the same month.

Last of Us - 7.5

State of Decay - 8.5

Ni No Kuni in January, best release for Microsoft was another XBLA game Skulls of the Shogun AGAIN made by a first party studio

Ni No Kuni - 6.5

Skulls of the Shogun (Microsoft Studios) - 8

Then we have a different take on things. We now have...

Killzone Shadow Fall...mostly because it's the main PS4 game coming out and having a bad score would look bad overall.

Funny how Beyond Two Souls didn't get a bad review from them and it's even funnier how nothing from Microsoft was coming out that month...nothing big anyway so they probably didn't see Beyond as a threat. Then you have the fact the game isn't for everyone.

It just seems they only get bad scores when they NEED to give it a bad score.

jobboy4238d ago

evidences are the proof

Deividas4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

Little late to the ball game there huh? Everyone knows MS pretty much owns Polygon. Probably the most Bias site out there, they are a joke sir.

AngelicIceDiamond4238d ago

@FTW Thanks

I'll be sure to not take anything polygon says seriously or under heavy speculation when it comes to PlayStation related news and reviews.

XboxFun4238d ago (Edited 4238d ago )

That's not really proof since it comes from a user who just seems upset.

Where is there proof that Polygon is actually and purposely scoring Sony games lower. Maybe their brand of gaming doesn't follow what Sony is delivering.

It's no secret on this site that everytime a Sony exclusive is scored low the main excuse is "MS paid for...". We got it for IGN, Kotaku, Destructoid even Eurogamer felt the heat until they started bashing MS and the Xbox 360.

It seems no site can be trusted unless they give a Sony game a 9 or higher a GoTY and a bash on MS and the 360/Xbox One.

I wonder what will happen when review scores for Xbox One games come and if they might have low scores I can only imagine the celebration that will occur instead of the constant postings of conspiracy of paid websites and biased journalism.

It's getting to the point where all you want to see and hear is how good a game is period. We should only trust sites that give Sony exclusives great scores.

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT233d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus233d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius233d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Rimeskeem584d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos583d ago (Edited 583d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor583d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld583d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie583d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.
