Should you care about the difference between 720p and 1080p?

By Erick Smith: "In the lead up to next gen, we've been noticing a lot of discussion about 720p vs. 1080p, and how game changing (zing!) 1080p is over its lower-resolution brethren. We won't deny you that if you take a screenshot of a game at the two rivaling resolutions, you will undoubtedly see some differences up close. But is that the entire story? Should gamers really care?"

if graphics are your be all and end all then yes you should care about the difference

if you're much more interested in gameplay, campaign length, enjoyability, playing with friends etc etc then no the difference shouldn't mean a single thing to you.

i'm not denying that 1080p is better than 720p considerably, i'm saying that in the end it's very very very low on the reasons why i should buy a game

Agreed 100% that gameplay/story/ etc etc are the biggest things to take into consideration, but gaming on a big TV like i do, jaggies become a lot more obvious at 720p....even when sitting 10 feet back like i do. Ive enjoyed hundreds of games this gen at 720p but its nice knowing im going to have 1080p games to take advantage of my TV.

ha maybe that's what i'm missing so my tv is only 32 inches and i sit more than 6 foot away so it all looks the same to me

@jackanderson.. in my opinion.. your wrong

of Corse resolution matters..these consoles now only have HDMI sockets, why can't we have resolution AND game play? it's nearly 2014 1080p has been around for YEARS..with these new consoles it shouldn't even be an issue.. I want 1080p as standard and game play.. heck 4k is what we should be talking about 720p and xbone should be embarrassed

we are a changing world it's like saying should we really care about smartphones as feature phones can still surf the Web.

Well that's the thing both game versions will be the same on both consoles EXCEPT for resolution. You are not picking the game for it. You are using it to pick which console to get or get it for.

jackanderson19851861d ago

no i'll be basing my purchase of what console/version my friends opt to get... if they all get X1 then i'm X1, if they all get PS4 then i'm PS4

ZBlacktt1861d ago

$500 vs $399, yes you should care. Make both consoles the same price ( $399 ). Then people would be like ok, I'll live with it.

jackanderson19851861d ago

different things in different boxes... i'm one of the lucky europeans getting fifa for "free" on day one so that knocks the difference down to around 35 euro between the consoles (fifa is 65 euro in shops here it's a disgrace)... to me the kinect at €35 euro isn't a bad deal, hell kinect at €100 wasn't a bad deal for me... i'm one of the (probable) few who actually liked the kinect version 1 and i had fun playing games on it and i'll be giving kinect it's full use on the xbox one... i'll also most likely pick up the PS Eye (or whatever it's new name is) for the PS4 when i pick that up when infamous comes out...

Dlacy13g1861d ago

Technically...its $499 vs $399. Just saying.

ZBlacktt1861d ago (Edited 1861d ago )

Here in OR state it's tax free even.

But Tax on $499 vs $399 is not, lol.

Sub-HD gaming is the main reason why I switched to PC in the first place.
I am less concerned with overall graphical fidelity than I am clarity itself. If I were to go back from 1080p at this point, it would definitely bother me.
