PS4′s Alleged Overheating Problems: Developers Say they Don’t Exist

In the last few days a couple of media outlets spread rumors abut the PS4 possibly suffering from overheating problems, and that was presented as the alleged reason why many journalists aren't receiving review units in advance.

Dualshockers asked quite a few PS4 developers for a comment on the issue, and all those willing to answer were unanimous in mentioning that they witnessed no such overheating problems.

To summarize the articles, PS4 has an APU(CPU+GPU on the same DIE) and a unified memory. Having GDDR5(VRAM) that allocates to both CPU and GPU all at the same time equals to having more efficient processing. Thus not requiring extra energy spent on splitting memory up. This architecture leads to smaller form factors, less power consumption, efficient processing(get the most out of your APU), better multitasking etc Audio, and Video processing. The Key for PS4 is the GDDR5. Remember the $1000 Nvidia Titan only has 6 GB of VRAM, and right now only 2-3 GB is really needed for high end gaming @1080p. VRAM is important for resolution, that's why when you go above @1080p that's where the Geforce Titan really shines above it's younger brother the GTX 780.

Sorry for the long ass post, but I felt a lot of news media are ignoring this new upcoming HSA Foundation. Mark Cerny wasn't lying when he said PS4 was a supercharged PC. There's a reason why Sony is at the event of AMD's APU 2013 Conference at November 13th.

I think I like this quote from the article most because it's one that can put us all at rest on the subject. I favor PS4 but it's good to hear there's no heat related problems on the X1 side either.

Another, currently at work on an AAA multiplatform game that will be on both PS4 and Xbox One, reported pretty much the same thing, including Microsoft’s new console into the picture.

It has been shown that dualshockers has a pro ps4 agenda and uses questionable methods of getting stories approved on N4g.
That has been proven.

It has also been shown that staff from dualshockers frequent n4g and comment on theor own stories to heat them up.

I ticketed CAT on this and she responded that a site upgrade is coming which will hopefully fix the abuse of the system that dualshockers (abriael) use to get stories approved.

If these developers are so sure the thing doesn't overheat, then why on earth are they requesting anonymity? Why not own up if it's the truth?

Yeah, I never pre-ordered a system because I'm still not sure which console I'm going to get. But, as a life long xbox fan, something strange is happening to me - I'm falling in love with the PS4! I mean, WTF is happening to me?

I'm 95% certain I'm going to switch over to Sony this generation. The only problem is the fact that I never pre-oreded the system, and I'll likely have a hell of a time trying to find one.

Its unlikely I'll find one on launch day, but hell, it will definitely be fun running around all week hunting one of these sleek machines down.

Almost the entire back of the PS4 is vented. THe PS4 also has vents on the tides.

In fact Ps4 has WAY more vents that PS3. Add that on top of the PS4 required less power with smaller chips, and you can see Sony did their homework.

GDDR5 uses less voltage resulting in less heat than DDR3, also x86 architecture produces less heat than cell. The console is built by laptop standards which is why they were able to make it so small at launch. The rumors are completely unjustified.

I'd be more worried about the Xbone overheating than PS4, although maybe not with that large power brick. MS need to avoid another RROD debacle at all costs, so it's understandable why it looks like it does.

PS4 is honestly superb architectural design from Cerny and his team of engineers. It has a smaller, sleeker chassis, it runs cooler than PS3, and is still the most powerful console ever produced. Genius.

Anyone still wondering why devs are anonymous ? They are not allowed to talk about. I was discussing ( or trying to) , PS4 devs kits with a dev on Twitter. He said he wasn't allowed to say anything about dev kits. Strict NDA, I believe.
They may talk to certain media they trust , but giving their name could be trouble.

Well i requested a free PS4 from Sony and they never gave it to me but i hear from a good source (my kindergarten teachers, 5th cousins, uncle best friend who said he used to work at Area 51 and did Alien research.) said that there is a huge bug in the OS that if you should enter <-, ->, <-, ->, up, up, down, down, share, share, option. the built in battery in the controller will explode melting your skin from your bones.

I don't think it was MS. I personally believed that it was an extremely hurt Xbox fan. I don't blame them because of what Microsoft did with their console they must hate the fact that Sony is extremely popular right now. I'm just happy that I'm not attached to any brand and that im able to jump ship if things go bad with the console that I own. For example I had a 360 in the Beginning because of all the excellent exclusives that it had (BioShock, Halo 3, Condemned Criminal Origins) and then Kinect happened and bam I sold my 360 and got myself a PS3. For next gen I waited to see the unveiling of both consoles and Microsoft's terrible TV TV TV water cooler conference caused me to side with Sony. This was before even knowing the price of the system and the PS4 lower price point solidified my decision.

This is a matter of simple thermodynamics. Sony has brilliant design, IMO, but the PS4 is pretty small, and houses it's own PSU.

I have faith that it will be plenty reliable in many enthusiast's (i.e. early adopters) livingrooms, because enthusiasts tend to be bright enough not to stuff their new hardware into a bad place. It's pretty unlikely that it will be quieter or more reliable than the XB1, though. Again, the simple truths of thermodynamics, which is the same thing that killed so many early 360s. If there's one advantage to having a bigger box, that's definitely it.

If you manage to get an early PS4, be sure to give it some good breathing room -- just like a dev environment.

I presume being a young inexperienced kid between 7 and 12 year old in a grown-up's world must be very stressful especially if your beloved toy are not doing so well in the world of digital gadgets. What I do find most disturbing, which indicates there are something extremely amiss or that could indicate a serious medical or mental condition, is the fact that they really even after all the evidence provided still carry on with their own belief or believe system. I find it a little hard to believe posts like this where no real sources are given except for conveniently the exclusive devs. Also the fact that we know at least a few systems died at the recent bf4 event although all the proof that was provided shown it was XBones's but that still contradicts what is claimed in the post.

There's no doubt the ps4 is more efficient this time around but I find this post just as trustworthy as the ones reporting the heating issues in the first place!

I was happy with my PS3 until I got YLOD. My ps3 was constantly cooled by a fan while playing and was positioned in a wide open place.

Any news regarding ps4 cooling issues has me worried and making wait for a better models.
