It’s about gaming, not dancing: Why losing support for our own music in next-gen console sucks

Sony surprised many console gaming fans by releasing what amounted to a long list of things that the upcoming PlayStation 4 will not be able to do. You can’t use the console to stream content from your PC, for example.

did Sony not say they are looking into this and it might come in a future update. some gamers love to whine. atleast whine about something tangible they have taken away and said will not be returning, whine about game prices in the uk going up, hell whine about a next gen console only doing 720p on some games but please stop whining about a games console not being able to play music that's why you have or should have dedicated MUSIC PLAYER.

xPhearR3dx4249d ago

This is a pretty legitimate complaint. I'm still getting a PS4 no matter what, but a next-gen console in 2013 that can't play MP3's? Come on. That's insulting.

Sony finally added playing music in the background with games, but then quickly killed all suspense by saying "But! You have to use our crappy music service that requires a subscription". It was a low ball move and now they're forced to change it without otherwise looking like a worse version of MS.

Mikelarry4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

my point is that Sony have now acknowledged this and are looking to add this in a future update. if Sony had said NO its our way or the high way then by all means complain or even cancel your pre-order. complaining about something they are looking to implement is mute.

@ phear

if this could not be done or they were not investigating on how this could be implemented they would have come out and said NO end of. so as long as this has not happened user need to be patient it is a games console first and they have to get that bit right

xPhearR3dx4249d ago (Edited 4249d ago )

They never said it would be implemented or looking to implement it. They only stated they would discuss it and then afterwards said they learned how much is was used on PS3. Until Sony comes out and says "Were looking on ways to add it" or "It will be added in a future update" there's no certainty it will be added.

Am I going to cancel my pre-order over it? No. But you bet your ass I'm very disappointed with no MP3 or DLNA support.

@Anarki No there isn't.

EDIT: @Mikelarry

You're putting words into Sony's mouth. The only thing they said was it would come up in a conversation for future consideration. That's it. That doesn't mean they're working on it, or they're trying to implement it. It means it's an idea that could possible lead to results.

Anarki4249d ago

There is an update coming after launch, relax.

Do at least 5 seconds of research before you start spreading made up lies.

xPhearR3dx4249d ago

@Ron_Danger

I'm spreading lies? Those are the words from Sony. You can find those Tweets all over the place. The link you posted, is even published as a rumor. Not a fact. I find it very hard to believe some unknown site spoke with a "Sony Rep" and they confirmed and detailed a patch for an unreleased system. Not to mention, no word from Sony or any other major reliable source to confirm that info.

Good sh@t @mike Larry im not a fanboy im getting both but I'll take
1080p over 720p mp3
$100 dollars cheaper better specs over a camera that lets face it nobody wants stupid fans call it plus because Sony doesn't have it in the box lol it sold like crazy because of the lies and the big promotion of it fact i know it sucks i have kinect ps move sucks to but i can walk, run, shoot, aim, look around, jump, duck etc and its used for game i play i don't wanna dance lol im far from lazy i workout everyday.but this downplaying the resolutions and saying mp3 is a big deal is crazy because when they update it then what do you think there updating the gpu/cpu /ram no.there gonna update the tools on xbox yes and on the ps4 the gap will only stay there or get bigger.

TheHybrid4249d ago

Not 720p, upscaled to 1080p by the best upscaler ever made. Lie to yourself and say you can tell the difference in a blind comparison. I bet you can see the fleas in the flea circus too.

Update for MP3 support coming soon after launch, as stated by Sony.

Aaaand the story was approved....Sigh.

kazuma9994249d ago

Lol yeah and does no one read on n4g anymore? XD they obviously said its coming later.

zippycup4249d ago

yes but a story about something coming later doesn't sell but one about a console not doing something that some people believe is a god given right does sell

don't get me wrong i want ps4 to play music videos and such but first and foremost ps4 is a gaming machine that's why im getting one at some point when i have money

anything other than that i consider a bonus

xPhearR3dx4249d ago

It was never stated by Sony that it's coming soon after launch. Don't spread BS. Below is the only statements released:

"Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration"

"Had a very good discussion w the PS4 Dev team today. We're happy & appreciative to learn so many people use and like PS3's media feature"

No where does that state it's coming soon after launch or that it's coming at all. Consideration is all that was said.

xPhearR3dx4249d ago

Some unknown site spoke to a "Sony Rep" and confirmed there's a patch and detailed it? Yet no major outlet has reported this news? Yeah, that's not sketchy at all.

Until there's an official word by Sony, that's all rumors.

kazuma9994249d ago

Ha I knew I didnt read it wrong so :P

GryestOfBluSkies4249d ago

the second system update will add mp3 support

badkolo4249d ago

who cares, it plays games right and thats all sony fans care about, just games and nothing else, they dont want a entertainment box of any kind so why even care about mp3 or hd support etc. as long as it plays just games im sure everyone will be fine

Kayant4249d ago

Seriously it's too early to abandon ship on this. Hope is not lost.... I think they just took this opportunity to push some of their services since everything wouldn't be ready day one for launch. (a bit too aggressive I would say). But MP3/DLNA support can be patched in from what I have read. Also people have pointed out PS3 didn't launch with DLNA support.

Square makes some very weird decisions.

CrashMania18h ago

This is really stupid and just baffling, the explanation for it is also a big non answer, very disappointing.

jeromeface4h ago

its pretty obvious they lost the source code

Scissorman16h ago

they are so going to try to sell the extra content later down the line.

Eonjay14h ago

Square Enix has really gone down the drain. Even FF7: Rebirth, while being an incredible acheivment seemed very sloppy in some areas... namely performance. These folks wonder why their games don't sell but aren't putting in a decent effort.

FinalFantasyFanatic14h ago

It's been like that for a while, they've just gotten progressively worse over time, this game is a bit of a monkey's paw situation. You get the remaster, but you don't get the War Of The Lions content in exchange.

-Gespenst-13h ago

They seem to be suggesting that people didn't like the new stuff in WotL, hence it's non-inclusion, but they're probably secretly planning to add it as DLC down the line, they just don't want to tell people that because they think it'll get an even worse reaction. When they do eventually add it, they'll be like, "We listened". Of course, it won't be free though, so they'll still get flak for it. On the other hand, maybe I'm too cynical.

ZeekQuattro11h ago

I could see that happening actually.
